I need Help I have a Chevy v6 2.8 and it has TBI. I am going to install a Holley 470cfm carb and i don't know what I need to do to the ignition system. What do I do with the coil? how will the distributor get electricity? Do I need to eliminate o add something?

nice video, I always thought it was intriguing hearing about people switching from fuel injection back to carb, I honestly thought it was really complicated, some people told me before you gotta put a whole new transmission in too cuz on the gmt400 chevy/gmc trucks the trans was electronic and would ONLY work with the computer with the fuel injection,etc.....would be an interesting project one day to convert one...I personally like how the carb sounds on trucks and muscle cars, kinda crude sounding and irregular and somewhat slower than the fast idle heard on fuel injection

Jak, I just installed a 400 small block (406) in my 1993 C 1500 with a 600 cfm Holley carburetor. It has the 4L60E transmission. I bought the TPS kit from Holley and installed it on the carb. I can not get the transmission to shift correctly. I think that the trans tries to start off in drive. The trans only shifts one time. I had just bought this truck, with a bad engine, and know nothing about the transmission. How can I check the transmission to tell if the solenoids are stuck or if the transmission is just burnt up or what? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Hello. . .I hope you can help me. I have a 1998 3500HD with the Vortec 454 and 5 speed manual transmission. I have been having problems with the fuel system for over a year now. . .I am giving up on the fuel injection and have decided to install a brand new electric choke Rochester Quadrajet I bought many years ago. I did notice that this L29 series engine does not have an exhaust cross over through the heads like my old 396. . .I hope that is not a problem? I am running a low fuel pressure aftermarket frame mounted electric pump, and drawing the fuel through the disabled factory pump in the tank so that I can retain the elaborate dual fuel tank sending units. I would like to leave the computer in the truck. . .I am having trouble figuring out the fuel guage, AC, and the antilock braking system. . .they all seem to be tied in to that box. Would there be any problems running a separate circuit for the fuel pump and ignition, but still retain the computer for the other components? Thanks, Tony
Malibu Jak, how the hell are ya' man..?! Thanks for the great video..! I'm doing a build a really needed to go through this... Thanks again, it seriously helped a lot..!
Hey Malibu --nice to know I can leave the pump in the tank of my '87 Silverado and pull fuel through it for my carb conversion....everybody thought that the in tank pump would close up like a check valve...I'm going to use a Carter vane type electric pump (outside type) to feed a Carter 625 AFB carb on my 454...what are your thoughts on this setup
If that's what you have to work with sounds like a neat build man. I've been told by others that they were having problems pulling through the electric pump. And I've been told by others that it works perfectly. In my case it works perfectly. I'm actually efi again on this truck running an inline 60 psi bosch pump. With the factory pump still in the tank. If that makes you feel better Lol
Yeah Malibu - as soon as I finish putting brake lines on my 2001 Durango I'm going to hook up the fuel pump on my ''''''87 Chevy Dually...I'l let you know how it turns out...
eric meyers Were around.most of us have transplanted ourselves cause of the brutal winters lol I hail from Lexington originally but im a permenate South carolina man till the end tho now.glad to see missiery is still kickin it lol
I see you just recently posted this and also you're in Missouri. Where about are you? I'm in Kansas City. I'm doing this conversion on my '87 and I'm stuck or stumped on a few things. Where exactly did you pull power from for your HEI? Why use mechanical fuel pump instead of wiring the electric to a "key on" lead?
+RangRayy Both Great questions. The original hot lead used to power the coil from the Tbi Distributor is what i used to power the HEI. I used a mechanical fuel pump because i could. You can also wire the Tbi pumps Relay to come on with the key so the pump runs full time. However it runs about 13 to 16psi more than enough to turn a carb into a fountain. Use a regulator to drop the Psi down to about 6
I was just wondering if you are still using your factory gages? if so how did you get them to work with your set up? i wanna pull my 5.0 tbi for a 383 carb. any info you may have would help me out a lot.
Yes. The factory gauges do not run through the ecu. At least they don't on my 88. Be sure and keep the sending units for the gauges in the 305 and transfer them over to the 383.
I did a vary similar swap to my old 89 k1500 but I used a 454. Ran like a champ, but wouldn't shift out of 1st gear with the trucks stock 4l60e transmission. Any ideas on why that was?
Brawler4456 GM Tbi is a very nice system for it's time. This truck in particular had missing parts and a bit of a butchered wiring harness. I had it running on TBI for awhile, and probably could've made it work. But I went ahead and did the conversion.
I can't say that. I've met a lot of people thats done it for many reasons. Some people could have issues similar to mine, others could reach the limitations of them, many could just simply be intimidated by them or think it's junk. I can't speak for everyone. I say if you've got it, use it. if you don't then don't. :)
That's what I did. But if you're wanting to use an electric pump then why not use the one in the tank? A bypass style regulator like from Aeromotive will drop the pressure down to carb level.
I had a 700r4 if you're using an electronic trans like a 60e. Keep the factory ecu in place, give it a tps signal, and a vss signal. And it will continue to operate like factory.
There is a brace on the stock manifold that runs to almost the middle area of the manifold. I need to run the ac where I live,,28 to 38 degrees C and 75 to 90% humidity ...so you just connected up the belt and never ran the ac at all ?..
steve rigby No I ran the AC all the time. I love AC too much to get rid of it. If you look in the video there is a brace on the back of the bracket. Yes it was very flimsy without it. I was just confused when you said I was using no brace when it has one :)
Hey Malibu Jak,thanks for answering I cannot see your bracket in the youtube I have stopped the vid at 2.41 and cannot see a brace mounted to the factory hole at the top,I can see the heater hose and the ac hoses but in stock form there is a bracket that mounts on the top (back ) of the ac compressor to stablise the pump,do you have a picture of the brace you are talking about :) Thanks in advance
I want to put a 383 stroker engine in my 95 GMC suburban which is a 350 I was told I need to switch out my computer if I did that because the 383 is carburetor and my 350 is tbi do this dude know what he's talking about before I let him restore my suburban
First let me apologize if these questions have been answered....first I have an 88 GMC Sierra that I want to convert to carb for many reasons. So the questions I have are 1)If I have the 700R4 do I need the TPS? 2) Which wire is the correct wire to splice and connect to the batt side of my new HEI distributor...I am assuming its the pink one plugged into the old coil? 3) If I want to use the factory fuel in tank pump (My current cam is a factory roller out of a 97 and I don't think it has a fuel pump lobe) I have read a couple conflicting things about which wire to use and how to get my fuel pump to turn on and stay on.....do you know which wire or wires I should use? I am pretty convinced I have to plug at least ONE into the tach side of the distributor so which one? Thanks very much ahead of time!!
Shannon Lane It's been a long time since I've done this so let's see how much I remember. The 700r4 transmission does Not require the use of the TPS. Only the 60e and 80e does. Your 700 requires the use of the TV (throttle valve) cable. And it must be adjusted probably or else you'll fry the transmission under load. The wire that went to the Hot side of the original Coil (the pink one) will go to the BATT side of your HEI. That's the only thing an HEI needs to operate. TACH is completely optional for a carb setup. Now my 88 TBI did not have a fuel pump cam lobe nor did it have the block drilled out for the fuel pump push rod. You can use the factory in tank pump but a regulator will be required to drop the pressure from 15 psi to 4 to 7 psi. As for wiring the pump all you need to do is make the relay come on with the key. So the pump comes on with the key. No need for anything else. However off the top of my head I don't know the pin out of the fuel pump relay. I hope my advice is helpful. :)
Very helpful and many thanks.! From your TBI swap video I was thinking you used a mechanical pump. I do have the provision and pump rod for the mechanical fuel pump in my block so I can go either with the electric in tank or change cams (which I do have one) however as for right now I would rather be able to wire the in tank pump as you also mentioned later that aftermarket in tank pumps had a check valve. The wires on the actual relay are green/white, black/white(I think is a ground or needs to be grounded) then red, orange, and gray. There is also another set of wires that are wired in on the firewall that I THINK is the fuel pump fuse
Malibu Jak. Ok how about the throttle cable. Is it controlled by the computer. I just got tge truck and haven't took a look yet. What it really is coming to is I want a full engine swap and if possible do away with computer all together.
Jerry Cooper You don't need the computer for anything if you don't want it. It's a throttle cable yes. Not Drive by wire. So you can use the factory cable. The cable bracket though may not reach so you may need to either extend the cable or get an aftermarket bracket. The TV cable for the 700r4 also needs to be properly adjusted.
i put vortec heads and holley carb on my 1994 K1500 and made a lil bracket to mount where the choke would be and mounted my stock tps on that, works/shifts the 4l60e perfect, the bracket only took 10 mins to make vs spending $100 plus dollars on some dumb kit, that looked all rigged up after installed, lol
We are going to do the same thing to our 95 k1500 suburban can you please get a picture of the bracket you made and send it to me is there a way to private message on here I can give you my email address
Michelle Jones .Either just run the old style manual pump and let it pull thru your original supply hard line via pulling the fuse to the in tank pump.as for the 4l60e take the electric choke off your carb mount your tps sensor onto the shaft and bolt it down.the throttle ahaft will trigger the ecu.95s stand alone on the transmission control, theres two wires behind the passenger kick panel that need tied together to get it the trans out of limp home mode but dont remember there color right off hand tho.Check out gmt400.com for a good photo walkthru.I did it to my 95 tahoe loved it
@@glennmanchester1568I can't find anything on using the tbi distributor! I need to know why using the tbi distributor is bad? Put in a 86 350 (already carb'd) and put in a 350 tbi distributor, I have manual tranny so that doesn't matter but it plugged right back into the harness. I did the fuel pressure regulator with return (going to switch it to the mechanical pulling through the electronic in the tank with no fuse), the tbi distributor, and never cut any wires so only thing being used from the harness is to the distributor, coil, alternator, and oil and temps sensors. It runs and iv brought it to WOT just a couple times but it seems like it's working just I need to know why it's bad if you have the time. Can't find anything on it beside this video saying it's bad but mine runs?

@@jacobdavis1979 with the 700r4 yeah okay. The only thing then would be the fuel shutting off in case of roll over. That's incorporated into the oil sender
@@fredcolberg9783 It's a mechanical fuel pump. All due respect, if you'd like to argue. There are better places to do it than an almost 10 year old TH-cam video. Have a wonderful day and keep on wrenching. :)

It's a cheap flimsy chrome piece from Oreilly. Spectre I believe is the brand.
I'll be replacing it soon with a better unit from Jegs.
Hello. . .I hope you can help me.
Yeah Malibu - as soon as I finish putting brake lines on my 2001 Durango I'm going to hook up the fuel pump on my ''''''87 Chevy Dually...I'l let you know how it turns out...
in the tank pump is alwAYS BETTER IT STAYS COOL
Hi you transmisson is 700r4 0r 2004r ??
Any guess as to why my map sensor line fills with fuel from the tbi...? Any guesses?
Would the gas gauge still work? If you pulled the fuse
HEY WHEN U CONVERTED TO CARB DID U HAVE TO GET CONVERT L0CKUP CONTROLLER SENSE U NOT USING THE COMPUTER
I just didn't use lock up.
You can make it work though
Where at in Missouri are you from? Don't see many of us Missourians in TH-cam :-)
eric meyers Were around.most of us have transplanted ourselves cause of the brutal winters lol I hail from Lexington originally but im a permenate South carolina man till the end tho now.glad to see missiery is still kickin it lol
Use a regulator to drop the Psi down to about 6
@@jacobdavis1979 that's exactly how I got my 88 model running with a 350 vortec swap.
@@jacobdavis1979 what type of fitting us from the gas line to the fuel pump and where can I find them
I did want to ask you my Speedo wont work is that just how it is or should it work
Hi, what was the mpg like compared to the tbi??
do you think i could pull the engine from a 89 chev. and put it into a 78 with the 78 harness.? thanks , and good video!
No reason you couldn't.
What happens to crank and knock sensors
TBI engines didn't have a crank sensor. Only the Vortec.
+Malibu Jak Ok thanks for your help! you're vid answered all the questions I had as well.
No problem
You still don't answer the issues of the ecm..tbs.air control..map sen. Etc....do these items stay as they are..is the truck still computer smart
Marvin Hesler In an 88 the computer doesn't do anything but control timing and fuel.
Gauges, AC, etc are all independent of the Efi.
Does an intake manifold from a 87-84 or so fit on tbi heads
I did a vary similar swap to my old 89 k1500 but I used a 454. Ran like a champ, but wouldn't shift out of 1st gear with the trucks stock 4l60e transmission. Any ideas on why that was?
Mike Marsiglia the 4l60e needs a tcm to operate it. Which your 89 doesn't have.
Seen vids where guys say only a holly carb will work cuz u can get a tcm and tcm bracket to go on it.
Ryan Garrett That's not true at all.
Remote TPSs can be used on any 4150 setup.
@@jacobdavis1979 said i heard other guys say it in vids. Never said it myself
what's the point of replacing the throttle body with a carburetor? i'd assume tb's would be better in just about every way.
Brawler4456 GM Tbi is a very nice system for it's time.
This truck in particular had missing parts and a bit of a butchered wiring harness.
I had it running on TBI for awhile, and probably could've made it work. But I went ahead and did the conversion.
ok so i'm guessing all of these swaps are coming from problems with that time's electrical systems?
I can't say that. I've met a lot of people thats done it for many reasons. Some people could have issues similar to mine, others could reach the limitations of them, many could just simply be intimidated by them or think it's junk. I can't speak for everyone. I say if you've got it, use it. if you don't then don't. :)
My 1992 just fried the electrical system and was wondering if I could drill out the center 4 bolts to put 84 intake on it’s
Carburetor makes more power
On the manual fuel pump did you still have to use the regulator Four the carburetor
so I can pull the fuel pump fuse an run an electronic fuel pump with a fuel pressure regulator for my carb ? I did a carb swap on a 96 5.7 vortec
That's what I did.
But if you're wanting to use an electric pump then why not use the one in the tank?
A bypass style regulator like from Aeromotive will drop the pressure down to carb level.
Great video, thanks for your help
No problem.
hello how u doing how can i use my tbi motor for a older chevy and by pass tbi to carb and all the seniors ansd brain
Ian Rodriguez of course
Is it automatic or stick, if automatic, how do you make you electronic trans to shift? Thanks
It's automatic. Not electronic. It's a 700r4
I'm looking into doing this with my 1995 gmc k1500. Did you have to do anything special to get the transmission to still shift off of the computer?
I had a 700r4
if you're using an electronic trans like a 60e. Keep the factory ecu in place, give it a tps signal, and a vss signal. And it will continue to operate like factory.
Malibu Jak okay cool. Thank you!
No problem
How do you give it a tps signal and a vss signal
is the ac compressor stable enough without the back brace that GM used ?
steve rigby Not sure. I never ran it without the brace. Unless there is a second one you're referring to?
There is a brace on the stock manifold that runs to almost the middle area of the manifold. I need to run the ac where I live,,28 to 38 degrees C and 75 to 90% humidity ...so you just connected up the belt and never ran the ac at all ?..
steve rigby No I ran the AC all the time. I love AC too much to get rid of it. If you look in the video there is a brace on the back of the bracket. Yes it was very flimsy without it. I was just confused when you said I was using no brace when it has one :)
Hey Malibu Jak,thanks for answering
I cannot see your bracket in the youtube I have stopped the vid at 2.41 and cannot see a brace mounted to the factory hole at the top,I can see the heater hose and the ac hoses but in stock form there is a bracket that mounts on the top (back ) of the ac compressor to stablise the pump,do you have a picture of the brace you are talking about :) Thanks in advance
4l60e needs special equipment for shifting?
John Wolf You can keep the factory computer in place. Give it a TPS signal and the transmission should work.
I want to put a 383 stroker engine in my 95 GMC suburban which is a 350 I was told I need to switch out my computer if I did that because the 383 is carburetor and my 350 is tbi do this dude know what he's talking about before I let him restore my suburban
I'm thinking about putting a carb on my 88 toranado can I use the stock fuel pump?
You should, but you'd need a fuel pressure regulator
On this setup I was using a mechanical pump.
This just isn't the original engine.
Malibu Jak which line to carb from fuel pump
From tank
How do you run the speedometer if it is electronic? I have a 1990 with 350 tbi and 700r4.
Jerry Cooper Leave the VSS in the transmission plugged in and it will work.
Malibu Jak perfect thanks alot.
You seem to awnser pretty fast lol. Got another. Do you know if the Air conditioner co trolled by the computer
I have a 94 k1500 with a 305 tbi and a 4l60e.... would I have to keep the tps and if so how would you hook it up?
Yes the factory ecu and a tps signal is needed.
TCI has something called a remote TPS that will make it easier.
i put vortec heads and holley carb on my 1994 K1500 and made a lil bracket to mount where the choke would be and mounted my stock tps on that, works/shifts the 4l60e perfect, the bracket only took 10 mins to make vs spending $100 plus dollars on some dumb kit, that looked all rigged up after installed, lol
We are going to do the same thing to our 95 k1500 suburban can you please get a picture of the bracket you made and send it to me is there a way to private message on here I can give you my email address
And what did you do for fuel I have a 98 vortec motor can we put a mechanical fuel pump on it
Michelle Jones .Either just run the old style manual pump and let it pull thru your original supply hard line via pulling the fuse to the in tank pump.as for the 4l60e take the electric choke off your carb mount your tps sensor onto the shaft and bolt it down.the throttle ahaft will trigger the ecu.95s stand alone on the transmission control, theres two wires behind the passenger kick panel that need tied together to get it the trans out of limp home mode but dont remember there color right off hand tho.Check out gmt400.com for a good photo walkthru.I did it to my 95 tahoe loved it

@@glennmanchester1568I can't find anything on using the tbi distributor! I need to know why using the tbi distributor is bad? I did the fuel pressure regulator with return (going to switch it to the mechanical pulling through the electronic in the tank with no fuse), the tbi distributor, and never cut any wires so only thing being used from the harness is to the distributor, coil, alternator, and oil and temps sensors. Do you need the TPS on a 5spd manual?? I have a 92 GMC Sierra 5.7 TBi with manual trans as a donor to use in a 64 c10. I like to strip off the TBI and do that setup. Do you know if the TPS needed for the manual trans that's from donor truck? Thanks great info..
Problem with the way you're doing it the ecm doesn't get the proper signals for the tranny
700r4 requires no computer to operate.
Transmission worked perfectly fine.
@@jacobdavis1979 with the 700r4 yeah okay. The only thing then would be the fuel shutting off in case of roll over. That's incorporated into the oil sender
