Nice job! It's good to see someone still troubleshoots at the board level. It makes sense to put a little time into doing so with current GPU prices the way they are.
@@TechCemetery i will try it tomorrow. It's on the zotac 1080ti. I had a short on it. Changed the MOSFET it's not shorted anymore. Card detected error 43. Gpuz not showing any information on gpu/memory but rocognized as 1080ti. You guessed maybe dead memory. So i'll check And i hope the gpu didn't suffered from this short.
@@yoyo3136 Good luck with the card, just remember that the HDMI/display port cable has to be hooked up to the faulty GPU for the test to run. Let me know how it goes, and feel free to ask any questions if necessary.
Great video, the 30 series cards look a bit more complex than previous designs so great to see they're still fixable. As always your troubleshooting skills are on point. And congrats on getting the fluke, that's a very nice multimeter. You should maybe get some sharper probes for it, they help a lot when trying to measure SMD components and I've found that good quality probes also generally make a multimeter's continuity mode more responsive.
@@TechCemetery honestly I got a cheap pair on ebay for like £15 and they're still much better than the ones that came with my meter, but I'd guess the expensive ones would be even better
Good job finding that! That was amazing. If both resistors were toast, to me that would indicate a massive overcurrent condition at some point. Maybe caused by liquid, I dunno. In any case, nothing expensive died with them.
Tech Cemetery i saw your video in full , its a great start as a repair electronics tech/eng. Those resistor that you have replaced are not just simple resistors , perhaps you have not yet heard / seen many faults , due to your age , these resistors are fusible too , Fusible Thin Film Chip Resistors , they purpose is to protect against hazard and random spurge current on power rail that are know/use to be driving all sorts of commands voltages / currents of ic controllers , due to Miller plateau effects in semiconductors . If you study a power controller you will see how currents go in or out from rail to load and sometimes , randomly due to load high variation consumption (on/off time which is not quite 0 or 1 in absolute term ) of cc will cause those resistor fuse to blow up / burn in due to current reverse circulation to rail switching from a state to another . Its complex but learnable . Go get your master in electronics , play with these only while studying . Real money are not in repairs of consuming products . It doesn't pay the bills . Fine while you learning study etc . Good job , just remember just above broke .
Hi I have a gigabyte rtx 3080 oc and it doesn't give any signal I used all the normal methods from changing the cables to changing the thermal pads to washing the card with a special substance and it didn't work. I even put two cards and connect the new card to the screen with the same result The device is working and the cards are working and there is no signal Are there additional recommendations to find out which piece of the card board is damaged and responsible for the problem? Any help please? There are no repairers for this type of card in my country
I get that the idea is to educate on how to fix these yourself, though this unit should have been in warranty, though Gigabyte is known to be very picky for any suspected customer induced damage edit: When I made the comment, I didnt watch the video yet. I now see there is customer induced damage and modifications, so yeah, this was a good candidate for 3rd party repair.

They can sometimes - you'll see AIBs using 0 ohm resistors where they really should have a fuse. For this card though, I don't think that's their purpose.

You have wooden table where you are doing the hot air desoldering. Is that safe? Anyway, great that it got repaired. So small defect, impossible to see with naked eye, but was discovered by carefully looking if all voltages would be in spec.

Is that a fuse at 3:14 with "Q" written on it? I'm surprised Gigabyte use fuses and Asus don't. Asus used to put fuses on their older cards. I had a GTX 560 Ti that lasted 10 years before the GPU chip died. BTW which of these brands would you recommend for the 3000 series (specifically 3070) Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, or Zotac?
Hi , can you help me repair my zotac 3080 , i swapped pads with thermal putty and after that it was working but during oc error came and windows closed and after that its not being detected, tried in different cpu as well but totaly not working . Is it possible if i can send u gpu for repair .
Wow the pex resistance is so low on these new cards but did you check the 1.8 resistance again after the repair and see if it changed as you stated you suspected that it was a little low for what you expected but as allways you smash it at repairing gpus what is the main faults you look for when purchasing dead gpus much love man and keep em coming ❤️💯
Yep, I checked it again. It sits at 240 more or less depending on how hot/cold the GPU is. It's a weirdly low reading and yet the GPU seems to work without issue. I suppose it might actually be a perfectly normal resistance rating for this card.
Just found this video trying to fix my dead 3080. @1.18 You check one of those R15 inductors to check the main power rails. I do that on mine and the inductor doesn't charge. How would I diagnose from there? Thanks for your videos!
If this were my card I would find a way to lower the memory temps. Like a copper mod. Something to reduce the temps at least 20 degrees or more. This card would last a long time if cooled down a bunch. Those 1ohm resistors should be changed to zero ohms but that is minor nit picking.

You work with huge passion and I feel it! You're amazing in what u doing... Wish we have that kind of specialist in my country coz mine RTX 2070 Super just died yesterday... Suddenly out of nowhere screen went black and the fans are not spinning. Only led GIGABYTE logo works... Can't even describe range of my saddnes... Can anyone here help me in my case? What can I do? I can't send back GPU to the seller because they lost their company i think :(

if dell voids warranty because i changed thermal pads on my 3080, i want you to take a look at it for video purposes. I think the Dell dual fan 3080s are some of the junkiest ones out there and should be exposed haha
There are a couple things I'd check. You'll want to check the first pair of capacitors for the PCIe lanes on the back of the card, if they're missing or damaged ( as in not 220nf) that can cause the card to be undetected. The BIOS is the next possibility and the resistors around it. The most likely scenario though is that you have a dead GPU like TeamTDU has mentioned.

Very nice video also, always nice to be able to learn something :) A GPU that boots, gives BIOS screen, able to install windows, but screens turns black as soon as Nvidia drivers are installed, is 99% dead GPU chip ? Have an old 1060 3GB doing it, all power rails up and running. Keep up the good work!
I usually assume it's the GPU if those are your symptons. I have a 1080 Ti in my possession that does that, it has a very low resistance on 1.8V (462 Ohms where we expect to see 850). Sometimes the memory can be at fault, or the capacitors behind the memory chips if any of them are missing, but like you mentioned, the most common culprit is the GPU itself.
I have a TI version of this card with similar simptoms, however mine does have 5v on both ends of those 0ohm resistors, but does not have vref or refin voltage. The 35ohm resistor you had suspisions but turned out to be ok has 560 ohms reading on mine. Enable reads 0v, the one above enable on top side reads 5v in 2.4v on the other end. Any suggestion on how one might proceed in my case?

I am getting 93 k Ohm on the 1.8 V test point on the front of the card and 12 V on the capacitor on the back that you tested for 3.3V. The GPU itself is not getting hot either. I have the 1.8 V but am missing GPU VRM as well as the next 2 points you tested, the memory and did you say pex? Any tips? EDIT: I found a boardview for the card and the capacitor that you are showing for 3.3V is labeled as 12V. Were you maybe testing somewhere else?
I have a puzle for you. Card asus r7 370. Boots to windows. Have display. Now gpu-z have no information about the card. literaly all tabs are blank. Windows have no idea were the display is coming from.(in device manager) ATI cant detect card so no drivers. HWinfo does detect gpu and its showing 150 h on gpu and similar on memory. I have replaced bios chip and flashed new bios. is gpu chip gone? good videos. keep it up.
I'm inclined to think the BIOS first. Many of the values in GPU-Z have to be read directly from the BIOS including BIOS version. I'm not suggesting a software flash would be enough, it's possible the chip resistors around it are at fault. I've never personally seen this problem so my guess is pure conjecture.
Nice one, all of that troubleshooting madness turns out to be dead 0 ohm resistor. Also nice brand new multimeter there, ofc with more accurate reading. Actually i have a lot of question whether it's worth or not buying dead GPU with burned capacitor near gpu vrm until it scraped the protective pcb layer. The another card is dead GPU vrm but this one kinda afraid me because of your last AMD card vrm repair. Oh also thanks for your videos i managed to repair RX 560 few days ago and i can finally retire my old AMD R9 card.
I avoid cards with burn damage and shorted PCB layers, I'm not very good at digging out a PCB short and there's also the fact that it has far less value even if it restored to working condition. As for the card with a dead GPU VRM, I avoid them if I can - unless it has a fuse. And nice to hear about the RX 560, is this the same card you asked me about a month ago?.

Yeah, but losing $7 isn't so much compared with this 560. The performance a little bit worse than my R9 but at least it's far more power efficient which is what i want
I have this same exact card, swapped out the thermal pads because the one was melting away and my memory was throttling at 110c. Booted right up and temps immediately dropped, highest it hit was 80 or so. Minutes later the screen started flickering and went black, now it wont boot with the vga light on. Any recommendations of where I should look for shorts or bad resistors? This video gave me some great insight, thank you so much!

I’m trying to fix my card following your video. My 3v is reading 12v assuming I checked the right component I checked the big brown one in front of the black one at the 3:15 minute mark. I’m also not getting a 1.8v on either side of the inductor. I’m not getting nothing on the vrm chokes, pex rail and memory.
I have a Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3080 12gb, I've had it for 2 days. The first day I had it, it ran perfectly fine. I even ran TimeSpy a couple times. The next day I wake up and my brand new PC has no video output. I could NOT get an output. I ended up having to hold the power down to shut it off (a cardinal sin). I finally got in bios with HDMI on motherboard (And THIS is why I would NEVER buy an F variant cpu) and my GPU was not being recognized. It was as if it wasn't even in there! I took it out and checked it out, made sure none of the power pins pushed in, reseated it, and it has been working fine every since. I am worried though! Why would it do that?
Sounds like the card wasn't seated right from the beginning, and or the card is sagging in the slot. Next time do this, loosen the mounting screws on the motherboard, insert the card in the pcie slot, then tighten the motherboard screws back up. Sometimes, cards won't align up right in the slot if the motherboard is shifted too much to one side. Tightening the screws up after the card is inserted, allows for better slot to card alignment. You should also consider using something to prop up the back of the card, as heavy cards sagging will also cause this issue.

Well my 1070 died and i finally found the issue, dead capacitor if i short the connectors it turns on, obviously just checked if it turns in not going to use it like it is My issue now is trying to find somewhere i can buy minimum 4x 270uf 16v SMD capacitors under £10 everywhere I’ve find is at least £17 and its annoying me... Can i just use 330uf instead or will something bad happen?

Hello I have a 980 ti asus strix that does not give video, they turn on the fans very fast. This happened after a power failure in the wall socket. There are 2 SMD capacitors that do not ring with the multimeter to ground, they are top left by the vram driver. If I connect by PCI it turns on the fans, the same with the source. The GPU gets hot to the touch if I pull out the heatsink. What opinion can you give me if you can?

On 1.8v rail is low resistance as you measured - 241ohm. Is this resistance stay after you repaired card or its changed ? I'm asking because of measuring this new cards profile.
I am on my 3rd Gigabyte RTX 3080 in two months and one rog strix RTX 3080. All problems. All retuned. I am now waiting on a evga. Until the evga arrives, my current issue is I cant get the card past 50% utilization during gameplay. There is nothing else to update. Nothing else to install, reinstall. I've ran ddu. I've reinstalled windows, the bios has been updated on the mobo. Etc. I have a 3070, that has zero troubles. Runs top. But my 3080's have so many problems. I even got a new pc after the second 3080. Still doesn't work.. That's 4 failed rtx 3080 in row? How is this possible? Current build is a RTX3080, X570 TUF PLUS, Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gb ram Gskill 3200mhz. Corsair liquor cooled, corsair 850w gold psu. My other build is the same except a 3070 & 16gb ram. My 3070 games WAY better and mines more stable than my 3080. 3080 will lhr lock regardless the settings. Which is also frustrating and I wasn't able to game until I started locking the volts on the 3080. But now I can't get past 30-50% utilization on the gpu. Meanwhile the cpu is running 40-60% utilization. I don't get it.

I got an issue with 3080fe Took it from Nvidia and instal to the pc The pc doesn't recognised the card. I did a windows recovery and only after that it start work.

I do offer a repair service, that's kind of interesting. Are you certain it's not the riser?. If you are certain it's the card and not the riser, I'd be looking at the capacitors on the back just above the PCIe lanes and seeing if they're 220nf each.

For RTX 3000 series, I'd pick MSI, then EVGA, then Asus in that order. I wouldn't buy anything from the other brands.

Suddenly out of nowhere screen went black and the fans are not spinning. Only led GIGABYTE logo works... Can't even describe range of my saddnes... Can anyone here help me in my case? What can I do? I can't send back GPU to the seller because they lost their company i think :(

if dell voids warranty because i changed thermal pads on my 3080, i want you to take a look at it for video purposes. I think the Dell dual fan 3080s are some of the junkiest ones out there and should be exposed haha
Nice guidance... I want to ask, if gpu didn't detect but vcore still exist, mem voltage exist too. And the gpu get hot. What the problem?
DEAD GPU
There are a couple things I'd check. You'll want to check the first pair of capacitors for the PCIe lanes on the back of the card, if they're missing or damaged ( as in not 220nf) that can cause the card to be undetected. The BIOS is the next possibility and the resistors around it. The most likely scenario though is that you have a dead GPU like TeamTDU has mentioned.

Very nice video also, always nice to be able to learn something :) A GPU that boots, gives BIOS screen, able to install windows, but screens turns black as soon as Nvidia drivers are installed, is 99% dead GPU chip ? Have an old 1060 3GB doing it, all power rails up and running. Keep up the good work!
I usually assume it's the GPU if those are your symptons. I have a 1080 Ti in my possession that does that, it has a very low resistance on 1.8V (462 Ohms where we expect to see 850). Sometimes the memory can be at fault, or the capacitors behind the memory chips if any of them are missing, but like you mentioned, the most common culprit is the GPU itself.
I have a TI version of this card with similar simptoms, however mine does have 5v on both ends of those 0ohm resistors, but does not have vref or refin voltage. The 35ohm resistor you had suspisions but turned out to be ok has 560 ohms reading on mine. Enable reads 0v, the one above enable on top side reads 5v in 2.4v on the other end. Any suggestion on how one might proceed in my case?

yor videos are awesome, in my country is very hard to get a 3080, I mostrly work with AMD and I have learn a lot from your content, yesterday a client gave me a GTX3080 HP OEM its the first time I get my hands on one of these, is beautiful! the thing is tha all the power lines are present, but there's no video and no hardware present, do you have any sugestion?
Check for any damaged components connected to PCIe pin A11, and the PCIe capacitors on the back.
Have you had any 3080s with an issue of no display output yet the gpu functions as an alternative gpu fine. Drivers install with no issues.
I am getting 93 k Ohm on the 1.8 V test point on the front of the card and 12 V on the capacitor on the back that you tested for 3.3V. The GPU itself is not getting hot either. I have the 1.8 V but am missing GPU VRM as well as the next 2 points you tested, the memory and did you say pex? Any tips?
EDIT: I found a boardview for the card and the capacitor that you are showing for 3.3V is labeled as 12V. Were you maybe testing somewhere else?

I have a puzle for you. Card asus r7 370. Boots to windows. Have display. Now gpu-z have no information about the card. literaly all tabs are blank. Windows have no idea were the display is coming from.(in device manager) ATI cant detect card so no drivers. HWinfo does detect gpu and its showing 150 h on gpu and similar on memory. I have replaced bios chip and flashed new bios.

I'm inclined to think the BIOS first. Many of the values in GPU-Z have to be read directly from the BIOS including BIOS version. I'm not suggesting a software flash would be enough, it's possible the chip resistors around it are at fault. I've never personally seen this problem so my guess is pure conjecture.

Actually i have a lot of question whether it's worth or not buying dead GPU with burned capacitor near gpu vrm until it scraped the protective pcb layer. The another card is dead GPU vrm but this one kinda afraid me because of your last AMD card vrm repair.
Oh also thanks for your videos i managed to repair RX 560 few days ago and i can finally retire my old AMD R9 card.
I avoid cards with burn damage and shorted PCB layers, I'm not very good at digging out a PCB short and there's also the fact that it has far less value even if it restored to working condition. As for the card with a dead GPU VRM, I avoid them if I can - unless it has a fuse. And nice to hear about the RX 560, is this the same card you asked me about a month ago?.
@@TechCemetery ok then looks like I'm gonna wait until i found another dead card. About the card, the old one was XFX RX 550 which i decided to give up and use it as spare parts. The new one is Powercolor RX 560.

Yeah, but losing $7 isn't so much compared with this 560. The performance a little bit worse than my R9 but at least it's far more power efficient which is what i want

I have this same exact card, swapped out the thermal pads because the one was melting away and my memory was throttling at 110c. Booted right up and temps immediately dropped, highest it hit was 80 or so. Minutes later the screen started flickering and went black, now it wont boot with the vga light on. Any recommendations of where I should look for shorts or bad resistors? This video gave me some great insight, thank you so much!

I’m trying to fix my card following your video. My 3v is reading 12v assuming I checked the right component I checked the big brown one in front of the black one at the 3:15 minute mark. I’m also not getting a 1.8v on either side of the inductor. I’m not getting nothing on the vrm chokes, pex rail and memory.
The resistance on my 5v is 236.4 ohms 1.8 is 320 ohms pex is 4.4 ohms memory is 35.8 ohms
I have a Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3080 12gb, I've had it for 2 days. The first day I had it, it ran perfectly fine. I even ran TimeSpy a couple times. The next day I wake up and my brand new PC has no video output. I could NOT get an output. I ended up having to hold the power down to shut it off (a cardinal sin). I finally got in bios with HDMI on motherboard (And THIS is why I would NEVER buy an F variant cpu) and my GPU was not being recognized. It was as if it wasn't even in there! I took it out and checked it out, made sure none of the power pins pushed in, reseated it, and it has been working fine every since. I am worried though! Why would it do that?
Sounds like the card wasn't seated right from the beginning, and or the card is sagging in the slot. Next time do this, loosen the mounting screws on the motherboard, insert the card in the pcie slot, then tighten the motherboard screws back up. Sometimes, cards won't align up right in the slot if the motherboard is shifted too much to one side. Tightening the screws up after the card is inserted, allows for better slot to card alignment. You should also consider using something to prop up the back of the card, as heavy cards sagging will also cause this issue.

Well my 1070 died and i finally found the issue, dead capacitor if i short the connectors it turns on, obviously just checked if it turns in not going to use it like it is
My issue now is trying to find somewhere i can buy minimum 4x 270uf 16v SMD capacitors under £10 everywhere I’ve find is at least £17 and its annoying me...

Hello I have a 980 ti asus strix that does not give video, they turn on the fans very fast.
This happened after a power failure in the wall socket.
There are 2 SMD capacitors that do not ring with the multimeter to ground, they are top left by the vram driver.
If I connect by PCI it turns on the fans, the same with the source.
The GPU gets hot to the touch if I pull out the heatsink.
What opinion can you give me if you can?

On 1.8v rail is low resistance as you measured - 241ohm. Is this resistance stay after you repaired card or its changed ? I'm asking because of measuring this new cards profile.
It's still the same, I checked it again after testing.

I am on my 3rd Gigabyte RTX 3080 in two months and one rog strix RTX 3080. All problems. All retuned. I am now waiting on a evga. Until the evga arrives, my current issue is I cant get the card past 50% utilization during gameplay.
There is nothing else to update. Nothing else to install, reinstall. I've ran ddu. I've reinstalled windows, the bios has been updated on the mobo. Etc.
I have a 3070, that has zero troubles. Runs top. But my 3080's have so many problems. I even got a new pc after the second 3080. Still doesn't work.. That's 4 failed rtx 3080 in row? How is this possible?
Current build is a RTX3080, X570 TUF PLUS, Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gb ram Gskill 3200mhz. Corsair liquor cooled, corsair 850w gold psu.
My other build is the same except a 3070 & 16gb ram. My 3070 games WAY better and mines more stable than my 3080.
3080 will lhr lock regardless the settings. Which is also frustrating and I wasn't able to game until I started locking the volts on the 3080. But now I can't get past 30-50% utilization on the gpu. Meanwhile the cpu is running 40-60% utilization. I don't get it.

A zero ohm resistor is basically is a wire.
There are also 0 ohm resistors that are fusible. Given the fact that both of these were fried, I'm guessing these ones were fusible ones.

I do offer a repair service, that's kind of interesting. Are you certain it's not the riser?. If you are certain it's the card and not the riser, I'd be looking at the capacitors on the back just above the PCIe lanes and seeing if they're 220nf each.
