    I am brand new to all of this so I’m cautious of getting dooped by big companies or just making a mistake in my naïvety! Thanks for sharing the ins and outs of the site and process, it makes a big difference in making the prospect of investing a lot less mystical.

    Brilliant thank you! New sharesies investor here and your video helped me more than the info I was trying to find on their platform. I feel much more confident and aware of how I can better utilize the sharesies platform for my goals now. Ps. loved your Te Reo Maori pronunciation too. Cheers again!

    Hi Brent this is a great in-depth video on how to use Sharesies. I just have a few questions firstly dose the portfolio automatically rebalance if a stock goes outside it’s target allocation. Secondly is there a way to set up dividend reinvestment plans in Sharesies or do you just have set it up through the company or share registry. Thank you

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tracey, thanks for the kind comments! I’m guessing this is for the autoinvest feature, it doesn’t reweight but rather it just defines how the money is initially invested. On the second point, it’s something the Sharesies community has been very vocal in requesting over a number of years! Right now there’s no option to reinvest dividends unfortunately and you’ll have to do it manually. Hope this helps and thanks again for your comments!

    i noticed you have quite a bit of money in your sharesies account, what are your thoughts if the company suddenly goes bust, is there any protections? ive always been reluctant to invest in such numbers cause of security risk and companies going belly up, what are your thoughts.. thanks in advance...

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi David, it was certainly a scary thought for me too. Sharesies hold the shares you buy through what’s called a custodian, or nominee account. This means Sharesies ‘own’ the shares but there are proper legal frameworks around this to ensure the shares are owed to you. The shares are also held separately from Sharesies as a trading company, so they can’t sell your shares to pay for their own operating costs. Given recent events with the likes of FTX this is a very important question you’ve asked, I hope this provides some clarity, but Sharesies have a lot more information about this on their website which I’d recommend reading. I was comfortable at the time, but with recent events I would definitely have started looking at non-custodian platforms such as Hatch and ASB as a safer option for the larger holdings. Hope this helps!

      Haha just making regular deposits every pay day I guess! I set up automatic payments so every fortnight on pay day money moves across. This is my only Sharesies account, but have other accounts with Kernel etc. Thanks for watching!

    Hi there,
    I am new to Sharesies, do we get to hold the shares( both Us or Nz) as long as we wish?
    Or do we have to sell it on the same day itself??

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! You can hold your shares as long as you wish. The shares are held in a nominee account (separate to sharesies as a company) on your behalf.

    Cool video. Just put my first 3500 into sharesies, almost entirely into ETFs. Do you have any thoughts on ETFs? seems good for a new investor like me.

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Ben, thanks for watching! I can't give financial advice, but I personally love ETFs and funds! I like the diversification and simplicity, and beating the market is not easy so core ETFs have been an important part of my portfolio. If you're interested, here is a great article from NZ-based Koura talking about the core-satellite portfolio strategy which many ETF investors follow: www.kourawealth.co.nz/blog/core-satellite-investment-strategy%3B-what-is-it-and-should-you-follow-it . Keep up the great work!

    Greating from Southland

      Hey Carlos, thanks for the support! Best to check with the IRD website, my understanding is if you invest over NZ$50,000 in non-NZ listed companies, you'll have to file for FIF tax. I've never had to do this, so best to check online.
      Mate the hardest bit to investing is just getting started - you're already most the way there! If you Google "pay yourself first", sorted.org.nz has a great article which is similar to what I've followed for many years and got me to where I am! Wish you all the best!

    Hey mate great video. What's your thoughts on day trading in NZ. Do you know any good brokers we can use to day trade in US market? Thanks in advance

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rocky - thanks for watching! Haven't day traded myself, but understand many use Stake and their Stake Black service, which allows same day settlements. I'd caution they have high forex fees but might be a good place to start looking!

      Hi Walman, thanks for watching! I am not sure whether overseas citizens can join Sharesies outside of Australia, but I understand it is likely possible to invest in NZX listed companies from overseas using custodial accounts based in Singapore, Australia and NZ.

    How much $ should I be putting into my portfolio a week? I’m so new to this and only 20 :)

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! It all comes down to what you can afford really! Being new I'd suggest looking into "dollar cost averaging" and "ETFs". Dollar cost averaging is a long word for simply saying you invest the same amount each week regardless of price, and over the long run has been proven to be an effective (and easy!) strategy to get started. ETFs are a beginner friendly way to start investing, but as it's highly diversified it also allows you to avoid the wild swings of individual stocks and constantly wondering whether you should buy/sell/buy/sell etc! This is just something that hopefully steers you in the right direction and away from "get rich quick" ideas in stocks. They're a volatile asset (down ~20% on average in 2022) and dollar cost averaging and ETFs are a beginner friendly way to invest a little and get some experience with how the stock market moves. Just by investing even a little you'll naturally become more curious and experimentative over time, I know I was :) all the best and let me know if you have any questions!

    • @BrentColeman
      @BrentColeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I should have clarified with a simple analogy, hopefully it clears up what an ETF is to get started. I find it makes silly finance terms easier to understand! ETFs are a bit like buying a Netflix subscription. You buy one membership, think of that like "one ETF unit". But under that one membership, you have thousands of movies. With an ETF, under it is hundreds/thousands of stocks like Google, Mainfreight, Spark, Apple etc. Sharesies have thousands of ETF options, most common are Smartshares Funds in NZ or Vanguard/StateStreet/iShares in the US.
