Make more of your 6"x6" pad

  • I was sorting out supply drawers the other day and came across a 6"x6" paper pad I'd forgotten about and thought it was about time I did something with it. A masterboard is a great way to use these smaller pieces of designer papers and for me a 12"x12" masterboard is far more useful than a small pad of paper hidden in a drawer.
Follow up video where I share the completed masterboards from the 6x6 pad: • Make more of your 6"x6...
    Happy Crafting

When I get overwhelmed or anxious, I’ll just make some master boards. It doesn’t require any thought or significant decision-making so it is very calming. I have so many…sooo many…6 x 6 and some 8 x 8 paper pads that I never think of. There will be some serious collating in my near future! Thanks, Ceri.

I find doing Masterboards so relaxing to do! I will usually make them when I'm not feeling really inspired to work in a journal, (maybe I don't feel well or I'm feeling too anxious about something) I'll pull a few smaller pads out and I use book pages, too, on Masterboards.

I also find when I’m feeling not inspired I make text page backgrounds or master-boards with no features on them just as bases for the future.

Hi, I do not have 6x6 but I have a pad of neutral photo mounts that I purchased at a discount shop. I created several collage bases. Today I took one of the bases further and then cut the sheet into usable tag bases. It was loads of fun and I have a wonderful use for this pad and all the bits I have hanging around. Now I need to create a storage element for all my newly made emphemera!

Good idea to make room for your shopping hauls! That helps others, too. I'm 😢a 6x6 paper pad crafter. My other favorite sizes are 6x8 and 8 1/2x1, since I'm a cardmaker, along with tags, and other embellishments. I haven't tried making a master board yet, although I have plenty of scraps. Someday....

When I first started paper crafting I bought a lot of paper pads. After a couple of years I was disenchanted. I don't want what I create to look commercial or manufactured. I saw the same paper pads being used by people on TH-cam which was horrifying. I stopped using someone else's "artistic vision" in order to develop and express my own. Seven years down the road, I am surprised at and quite proud of what I create. I taught myself Photoshop and I have worked diligently to build a sense of originality and integrity in what I create. Convenience is something I avoid at all costs. There is a quote I ran across recently that verifies my attitude. It is by H. W. Janson: "Originality is what distinguishes art from craft. It is the yardstick of artistic greatness."

Could you scan your masterboard creations and use them again or would that be copyright infringement? I know what you mean about the weather. I'm in East Tennessee USA and we went from freeze warnings (lows in the 20s) and the heat running, to the 80s with the AC on, back to the 50s and the heat on again, all in about two weeks. Dogwoods are blooming so this is what we call "dogwood winter."

I believe you can photocopy your master boards if they are for your use only and nothing made from them is sold.

Another great idea! Funny but I bought a kids puzzle book and am using that. Including coffee/tea stained paper on the back!
BTW glad you heard me calling out to turn some of your papers! Happy Easter (it is here)

Hi Ceri, I had a go with pad I had I stock, but I'm not keen on the finished masterboard - how would you rescue this problem?

You can add Washi tape or strips of decorative papers to break up the background, stamps also adds another element, also you may like the background a little more if you cut it up into tags, journal cards etc then you could embellish those items independently.

@Ceri Griffiths thank you for your suggestions, I think I'll washi tape it first, then cut and see where I go from there. I was just so disappointed when I'd done it that I nearly deligated it to the bin 😱

Have you ever tried starting your masterboard in the middle instead of in a corner?

Actually now you mention it I don’t think I have.

@@CeriGriffiths It could be interesting to compare the two. A small change, but it might change the way your brain approaches it.

Nancy a master board is a background that you’ve created which can then be cut up into background bases for ephemera.

The first person I saw do Masterboards in a book was Tina @shabbydabbydoodah. I really like the idea of using small paper pads for this purpose. Thanks Ceri!
