Don't worry. You guys are still the dumb, irresponsible kids we all were. We forget because the whole 'responsible adult' thing takes up so much time that we forget. Since you're in your 70's and your responsibilities are done, I suggest you dig out your old clothes from that era and start raising hell again. In my opinion, on every album made with Dire Straits and as a solo artist, Mark Knopfler takes the listener on an journey, full of wit, sometimes satire, love and also melancholy. There is a great deal of reflection, Mark being a phenomenal observer and interpretor of whatever is going on around him or wherever he is looking. For me, the music and lyrics are unique and masterful. Whilst many rightfully acknowledge and focus on his brilliant technical ability as a musician, his writing and lyricism sometimes is ignored, which is a great shame, since Mark Knopfler is a fantastic and conscientious storyteller, deserving every music prize there is out there ❤✍️ 🎸 🎶 // Carin in Sweden
How many people actually know MK has never used a pick? Yet he manages to get stunning sounds out of his guitar. Ah memories of the best decade to be a kid - the 80's.

How awesome is this?! I was just listening to this in my room at night with by headphones on, and at the start, my room was partially illuminated due to a light in the neighbour’s house shining through my window. As the intro built up as it does with the awesome intermittent drum fills and synth sounds, it felt spectacular and I knew that moment where everything stops and the iconic riff comes in was coming up, but nothing could prepare me for what happened. Bang on the kick drum hit at 1:42 where everyone stops and the iconic guitar riff comes in, the neighbour’s light turned off and my room submerged into darkness, making that intro even more atmospheric than it already is. I honestly can’t describe how it felt, it was as if some sort of other worldly force decided that was going to happen and it was phenomenal.

God I feel sorry for kids today with the garbage they have to listen too. I thank God I was young in the 70s and 80s when bands just ripped it up on stage with the best music ever.
I know that, by garbage, you're referring to a lot of the pop and rap of my generation that is truly horrid. The songs with nothing real to say, with wholly foul language, basic and uninspired chord progressions, void of all artistic ability... just remember that if you dig deep enough in modern music, and you inch away from the mainstream stuff, you can fine some truly great music. The Longest Johns, for example, write and cover sea-shanties. Wellerman is their most famous song. The lyrics tell the very sad story of whaling, and how brutal it was. Fire and Flame from their album Cures What Ails Ya immortalizes the tragedy of the explosion of the Mont Blanc in Nova Scotia in 1917. Other songs of theirs are also really good, having good messages and interesting, skillful instrumentation. One of Phillip Phillips' albums, The World from the Side of the Moon, has some really good themes about protection, love, and community, with some excellent guitar work. Some amazing orchestral stuff I can offer includes Steven Bryant's Automatic Earth, Solace, and Ecstatic Waters, or Jim Stephenson's Symphony no. 2. Sabaton has excellent historical music, about WWI, WWII, and other conflicts throughout history like the Peloponnesian Wars or the 300. There are also some really amazing love songs like I Hear a Symphony by Cody Fry and Marry Me by Train. There's this one witty, albeit simple rap song called Bassthoven, which is a play on Beethoven and involves a lot of really well-done references to Beethoven. Video games have really good themes, like Sogno di Volare from Civ 6. I could keep going but I'm sure you get the point. Mainstream music is horrible, sure, but there are some amazing songs in this time, admittedly very little of which is made by people my age, but still, there is excellent music to be found as there are excellent books and poetry to be found as there are good movies to be found in this day and age.
