@@kennethward4985 well, to be honest you are right. It doesn’t matter to me what a musician looks like, but I know that looks play a big part in the music biz. I wish it didn’t, as I just care about the music.
Gary... trust me when I tell you, The Jayhawks are seriously loved and are taken personally by many many people including myself.. Never give up... We love you.
The Jayhawks are simply one of the best bands in the last 30 years. I only wish this studio performance was recorded and issued as a live album. The harmonies are so beautiful and the musicianship is in a class by itself.
I think these are up there with the likes of Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles to name a couple. I came across them whilst on holiday in LA last week being played over a store sound system. Love them.
Whats amazing... is after a number of years growing up during the 70's and 80's and listening to a LOT of progressive music, you find a band like The Jayhawks and it all comes together... This band never EVER gets old in my book... Thank you Gary and Marc P and Karen and Tim for keeping the flame alive..
Peter..thank you for inspiring me to write a song called "KEEPING THIS FLAME ALIVE"...here's a little section. KEEPING THE FLAME ALIVE. Verse 1 Some say, "You're only young once", And age is a animal, Which hunts us down, Pre-chorus. Though, take that frown, Down, from your face, And race like you did, When you were a kid, ...and..someone. CHORUS. BECAUSE, THOUGH MANY BANDS, ... HAVE ROCKED ON, LOST IN THE MUSIC OF THEIR LAST SONG, THIS IS SO..NOT YOUR TIME TO DIE, SO, KEEP YOUR FLAME ALIVE, AND YOU'LL BE KEEPING THE FLAME ALIVE, YOU'LL BE KEEPING THE FLAME ALIVE. ...and so on and so forth...maybe i should write it for the Jayhawks...great band..tight.
I've been listening to the Jayhawks for nearly 20 years and I finally got to see them at the Islington Assembly Hall in London last week and it was brilliant. Great as their records are - I don't think you've heard the Jayhawks until you've heard them live - absolutely sublime.
I travelled from New Zealand to see them. Ran into the band on the streets of Islington on their way to the shows soundcheck. Was good to talk to them. I have been a fan from the first time I heard Blue. The concert was superb. They really are incapable of creating a dud song. So underated it is wrong.
So wonderful to see The Jayhawks sounding so crisp. So vibrant. So tight. So emotional This is my favorite Jayhawks lineup as it highlights the talents of Karen Grotberg on piano and Tim O'Reagan on drums. Both are exceptional harmony vocalists and sterling musicians as is Marc Perlman on bass. Kraig Johnson also seems to added some musical muscle to the band. And Gary Louris is a monster talent and The Jayhawks are best off with him at the creative center of the band.
I already have my ticket to see them in a small theater near my hometown in Northern Spain. I have been a fan for so long that I cannot wait to see them live.
Live in UK and am older guy, but never heard of Jayhawks - they are absolutely brilliant. The band the Byrds could have been....only joking ! Thanks KEXP
sound of lies, the whole album, is a jem, one of my favourite albums ever. I will never thank enough the the shopkeeper that told me to buy it..... i must be the only italian fan.
totally agree. when Mark Olson left I thought it was the end. And, although they never could replace that original sound, the "new" heavier sound Lies had was great. I think Marc Pearlman actually wrote most of those songs, which just shows the depth of talent this band has.
Heya! How funny and ironic for Gary to say this about Sound of Lies....I had just discovered the Jayhawks, and was going through a divorce. so yeah...I was relating on subliminal levels or something...
I have always enjoyed and extracted a great deal of pleasure from listening to the music of the Jayhawks since the release of Tomorrow the Green Grass. Post Olson, Sound of Lies was a masterpiece; the secret weapon deployed, was Karen Grotberg - the Rick Wright/ John Paul Jones of the this wonderful band - her harmony vocals supporting Gary are arguably more satisfying than when Mark Olson was with the band.
From the opening bars of Waiting for the Sun on LATER circa 1992 i fell in love with this band , saw them soon after and was blown away , Great harmonies , musicianship , hints of the Byrds , with a sprinkle of Neil Young Harvest era , but always with their own definable country rock twist , From this radio promo they still sound great , only a Marc Olsen return could improve things IMHO. mac
I would not mind (LOL) a FULL, ALL iterations personnel combined reunion tour (with Eric Heywood backing them up on pedal and lap steels), but that being said, they were still PHENOMENAL last night with this current iteration. ;)
+Ted Hoffman Check out pledgemusic.com to help the band produce the next album. So far it sounds terrific. I can't wait to hear the whole production when it's completed.
So looking forward to seeing these brilliant musicians is San Antonio in May. I just discovered them this past year on Outlaw Radio on Sirius. Wow! Incredibly stunning music.
January 2, 2016 at First Avenue was an unbelievable show and the new material sounded fantastic. I've seen this band maybe 30 times and they always put on a good show but this night was different. I was in awe by how tight they were throughout the show. You could see the expressions on their faces when it appeared the band was even impressed with how well their performances sounded. The previous time they played First Avenue, (9/15) the audience vocals were louder than the bands on almost every song. What a band! Pre-order the new album at www.pledgemusic.com
I love the KEXP series, but there's too much yakking in the middle, sometimes more than the musicians are comfortable with. You could cut the interview time in half and have time for one more song.
My favorite between-song banter moment was the Run Westy Run name-drop -- one of my all-time fav lesser-known of the '80s/'90s Twin Cities' Alt-Rock bands!!
Love me some Jayhawks but they're not blending so hot here. Sounds like they all just woke up and didn't get a chance to warm up. Also, is Gary having a harder time reaching that upper register these days?
Nice.. but seriously, if you're gonna play a solo please at least practice a bit first or skip the solo entirely because most people do better within the first few months of playing guitar seriously.
+ZeroTheHero That's a bit harsh man. The Jayhawks are a solid performing group with lots of miles and styles under their wheels....You're a picky slicky who would have been harsh on "The Band," Bob Dylan and others who've lived long hours on North American highways....
+Terrance Hill At 2:55 it starts (lasts until 3:43) and if you cant spot the errors, you aren't much of a guitar player. Not only is the solo played badly, it's also a very amateurish solo and it would most likely not have sounded great if it were played flawlessly.
+ZeroTheHero I'm thinking you're not a guitar player at all? Post some of your You Tube video's of your band and let's hear how flawlessly your band plays OK..?
Terrance Hill Sounds like you ran all out of arguments and reverted to the good old "let's see if you're any better" strategy. Pathetic. You don't have to be a carpenter to complain about poorly done carpentry or a computer software developer to complain about buggy software, so I don't see why you seem to think it's any more relevant in this case. Whether I play the guitar or not is irrelevant in this matter. It's not my performance that were below par here. I've always claimed that no solo is better than a bad solo and this is a classic example. I've played the guitar since 1989 and I've done worse solos than this on occasion. Never on record, though.
The Jayhawks May be the most underrated band in rock n roll. It was always a mystery to me that they never had any mainstream success.
Agreed. Just saw them last night
Sure they have a few close to radio type songs, but Gary looking like my grandmother sure didn't help.

Gary is having a very healthy attitude towards the band.
I thought what Johnny cash, said about Gary as being one of the greatest contemporary songsmiths of this time.
Gem!
holy shit this rules

How bout time coding the songlist in the description? Just a thought.
Gary uses the guitar as a vehicle for the song, plays lead or fills,in the way Kieth and Neil young do.
25:38 Kraig's reaction to the underwhelming finish of his solo. LOL
Great, loose performance. They sound so happy playing together this past year, it's a joy to hear them.
Slightly reminiscent of early Byrds w/ Roger Mcguinn.
The first song sounds like a knock off of "My Back Pages" by Dylan which of course The Byrds covered.
IS a knockoff
