Individually Gaokao is naturally not pleasant, but it ensures people have equal measurement to enter good university no matter rich or poor.
Otherwise if university admission also considers student’s volunteer experience, students from to rich family will definitely have better experience than those poor, making the poor even less competitive.
There are still some unfair factors in Gaokao like the admission threshold in some cities like Shanghai is lower than other provinces, but overall the system is fair. After all, Gaokao is just an epitome of how hard the competition in China is. Even if you got admitted to a good university, you will need to study harder as well as engage in numerous activities and internship so that you may get a better job upon graduation which just in turn means you need to work even harder compete with those smarter colleagues.

Seriously? Are you sure you understand the US education system? Americans has no rights when it comes to education. Their laws forced every child to have a minimum high school education. Compulsory education starts at 6 years old and continues until grade 12 at the age of 17. No exception. Also, the Americans don't even have the rights to enter certain schools because of lingering undercover segregation hidden under terms like "school districts" and "school funded from neighborhood property tax".

Point is population matters cuz , the more the size of the population the more tough is the exam .

There are people in China who stake everything on these exams and take on an immense perseverance to do well. Personally I recall sitting with an SAT preparatory book, and being really unhappy and thinking it was too hard and I was doomed. I did very well on the actual exam! The question I keep thinking here is "What is the NATURE of this exam, how does it COMPARE to others like the SAT?" I'm sure someone is addressing that somewhere.

My country's independent chinese school's exam also hold university entrance exam for china's university which you can use the results to apply for famous unis like tsinghua and peking university. The exam is very hard especially maths and physics. Chinese is also one of the best subject cuz we use totally different words compared to our ancestors and in the test, they will test our ability of understanding ancient words and poems written by famous poets and we normally have to memorize 300 of poems. Their chinese essays are also hard as it usually uses idioms or politic related topics as the title of essay.

it's the same I'm Spain, although the exam is much easier, you risk 6 years of highschool in three days of exams. Unlike in the US, extracurriculars, personality, leadership skills, interviews, etc. don't matter. it's just the mark of the exams and of the last two years of high school. When you mix them together you get a score out of 14, and depending on your score you'll have priority over other students when choosing your career, since spots are limited

Same here in India too. I haven't experienced any competitive exams since I am just 14, but there is tough competition. Students are very serious when it comes to NEET, JEE and JEE Advanced. Most students spend their whole day studying. Some don't even sleep properly because of the stress. If you fail, then the society will consider you as a failure

@@bernardwetoyi4438 that's great. Our education minister also introduced the new system but it will not apply this year, maybe 2-4 years later. I don't know that much about the new education system introduced by our education minister. Let's just hope it will be good since many students like me have sucidal thoughts.
