The gaokao is widely considered the most important exam Chinese students will face in their lifetimes. The test can make or break a young person’s future, since their scores largely determine if and where they can attend university and what areas of study they can pursue. While many critics of the gaokao say preparing for it is too gruelling, others still consider the exam a relatively fair system of meritocracy - especially for students from less-privileged socio-economic backgrounds.

A few clarification "GaoKao" direct translation is indeed "high test" but the high(Gao) comes from the high school(gao zhong) not from meaning very difficult or top tier, even though it is. A similar example is the "zhongkao" which is the middle school examination to determine what level high school(they rank high school in the regions and depending on scores you go to different high schools as your middle school friends) you can go to. The direct translation of that would be middle exam, but once again it is a abbreviation for chu zhong(middle school) examination. Also you can retake the gaokao as much as you want if you are not satisfied with your score, so it is not a immediate life over if you mess up the first time. However most that don't do well end up not retaking because of their families economic status needing them to work right away and cannot afford tutoring classes for a retake of gaokao. Most of these familes view it as a waste of time since they cannot support their son or daughter in retaking the exam and would rather them do hard labor for money. GaoKao's content is similar to the AP test in america except you are taking ap gov + ap lit + ap chem + ap physics C + ap world history + ap bio + ap geography all at once plus their chinese and super in depth math in geometry, algebra 2, and pre-calculus. No calculus but the math questions are notoriously tough for american standards of geometry,pre-calculus and algebra 2.

Comparing AP to Gaokao is like comparing a cat to a tiger. In AP, you only need to pass a minimum score for elite university to overlook your record, in Gaokao however, passing the test is completely useless, you are competing to get as high score as possible in order to university.

Lol. Imagine studying 14 hours a day 24/7 from the age of 6 to 18. Go to college and repeat that process but harder. Only to get denied entry to your dream jobs because some people have connections. Then you settle for other options, but you come to learn that for each position there is 1k-10k applicants. So you dont get no job, because some people used money to bribe their way in. And at the end after a few months of searching, you finally get a job as a factory worker making minimum wage.

According to my Chinese cousins, their college is easy. So basically from pre-k/ first grade-12 grade, the study is intense while in college it’s more relaxed, not saying it’s not hard but more relaxed. It’s the complete opposite in the US. Since I was born in the US, and took on the US education system, it’s more like we have it easy 1-12 and then college is super hard.

In Indonesia, we have something similar to gaokao called SNBT (test-based/exam-based selection), but we also have what's known as SNBP (grade-based selection), which is just based on your high school grades, and you don't have to take an exam to get into a state university.

When you live in a country with one of the largest populations in the world, finding and providing jobs for the people is one of the most difficult tasks the government and small & large companies/businesses can do. My family even had this same struggle when they were growing up in China, which is why my great grand parents decided to send my parents over to the US, because it was just too competitive to find work and almost no opportunities, especially for them, since they struggle to afford school, coming from a poor rural village.
