    I must say that I am impressed by Ashkenazy as a conductor: the orchestra is very powerful, yet leaves enough space to the pianist. Kissin's play is simply awesome as it remains clear at all times in spite of the rhythmic difficulties. He also manages a very fine balance between sentiment, percussive sound and furia when required. Quite a recording... Thanks for posting !

    • @maltehenrikgohr
      @maltehenrikgohr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think that's possible because Ashkenazy is a very good pianist too. He knows how the orchestra has to play if the pianist should have his space too. :)

    • @not2tees
      @not2tees 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As notable as Mr. Ashkenazy is as a pianist, his conducting actually seems to be where he shines even more. I, however, am innocent of being overqualified as a music critic, so I'll leave it at that.

    • @geuros
      @geuros 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      not sure if you have an idea that Ashkenazy played this very concert himself earlier as pianist and now he is conducting it. Not like he was a very good pianist too, he's one of the best ever.

    This is one of the best piano concertos ever written, Prokofiev a great pianist himself has done a brilliant job by this concerto as a composer and himself as a performer. Very romantic while extremely modern. I never get tired of it and I have listened to it for more than 60 years with different pianists and this is one of the best.

    If you listen to Prokofiev playing his own compositions, you'll see that he did NOT play in the mechanical percussive manner people tend to play him in. He actually played his music with a rubato and musical touch, often much slower than usually performed. I think Kissin captures that very nicely.

    • @eustacequinlank7418
      @eustacequinlank7418 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Echoherb I've listened to Prokofiev's own recording of his 3rd Piano Concerto and it is very acute and 'mechanical', more so even than say Argerich's, in fact I don't see how different Kissin is here. His whole style of composition is modernistic and deliberately abrupt and sharp. Listen to Richter's harsh performance of his 5th and tell me that it wasn't meant to be played that way, Prokofiev even had Richter premiere his 6th Sonata because he admired his performances of his scores and his renditions were some of the most aggressive.

      Kissin plays as he plays not as Prokofiev played. He tends to keep the music well within the boundaries of regular interpretation, in that does do right to Prokofiev's ideas, but light is shed on other details.

    • @aberneiser
      @aberneiser 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is wrong. Every account of people who listened to Prokofiev play described it as very mechanical, without any rubato, embellishments etc. It was more of a composer presenting his work in the most sober way possible than a pianist playing.

    The brilliant cadenza that everyone is talking about at 5:42-10:24 for goodness's sake is quite possibly the greatest, or at least most unique, cadenza in classical music history here. Kissin blows it, or us, out of the water, I can't tell which. They say all pianist temporarily resigned after hearing Kissin's interpretation (%

    • @dspannplayspiano
      @dspannplayspiano 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For me this cadenza depicts a greater struggle in the heart of the composer at the time. I believe this concerto was written in anger because Prokofiev lost a close friend or somebody he really cared about, if I recall. You can feel the resonating waves of deep internal frustration here, really, with the whole piece, which makes me like it even more because Prok is not limiting himself to the "rules" of classical music with this and many, many more of his works. He seems to have mastered the art of speaking his heart with the music he writes, as all artists should.

      Most pianists (even supposedly great ones, see Ashkenazy's mess of the cadenza) can't even find the throughline. In the big muddy bits, Kissin is pretty lost, but at least he doesn't doesn't sound muddled. It's like Ginastera's third piano sonata, people just can't even get the gist, play the notes, and it doesn't sound convicing.

      I don't really think someone can have listened to too many renditions of no. 2 and have this opinion. Ashkenazy's version is timid and typically confused in the cadenza, and Kissin no more knows his way around the impossible parts of the cadenza. Horacio Gutierrez gives a better accounting even if I could want more out of the orchestra.

    The Chopin Recordings by Mr. Kissin are also outstanding. In my youth I usually heard 'overdramatized' interpretations of Chopin, which led me to believe that his music was some sort of pompous and exalted emergency waltz. I have to admit to my own shame that I had to listen to Mr. Kissin playing the works of Chopin to fully appreciate what wonderful music it is. I hope we will hear many more good recordings from him. As a matter of fact, I think he just released another recording of Prokofiev Piano Concerto 1 & 3 with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

    Whilst I would agree that this is an amazing performance of a difficult work, I feel that Kissin was playing for safety and accuracy in this performance. The cadenza in the first movement, especially the ending, lacks the fire and fury of the Yuja Wang performance under Paavo Jarvi. A magnificent performance of my favourite work. Thank goodness that so many incredibly gifted pianists have tackled and recorded this music.

    Orville C. Wright, Jr. Could it be possible that Prokofiev had his own style of performance, somewhat idiomatic to say the least; though, by the same token, he could have encouraged a more percussive and mordant style in others who performed his works. I am particularly thinking of Sviatoslav Richter's stunning performances of Prokofiev's piano works.

    I listened to ashkenazy, yuja, yundi, kissin. And i finally got that kissin's record was better than others. Well this is just my opinion. But i think fast and accurate is not the whole standard to judge artists. I think the feeling we get while listening to is most important than others. This is also my opinion and i think this pianist's record is most well-done than others'. By the way i am curious that why lang lang didn't recorded this.

    Re-hearing the 1st movement cadenza just now (starting 5:42), I realized something I haven't acknowledged before: Kissin steadfastly honors the principle that no matter what degree of technical virtuosity is called for, there is no excuse for an ugly piano tone. I can't recall if he's always been this observant or if I'm hearing a new degree of artistic maturity. Probably the former.

    • @geuros
      @geuros 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      and I dare to disagree. Especially that it's Prokofiev. Technical demands should never excuse you from making an ugly piano tone. However, the intent of creating ugly, terrifying, unlikeable tone definitely can. Before Prokofiev/Bartók, it was kind of forbidden, but Prokofiev really sometimes uses piano as percussive instrument, when his intentions were not to make beautiful music, but to scare the crap out of you. War Sonatas for example.

    • @geuros
      @geuros 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Muniz F I don't mean the dissonances, but the nature of the music. Dance of Knights from the Romeo and Juliet ballet is beautiful music, yet the main theme sounds evil even though it's beautiful. I feel like it should display the hateful emotions of the two families towards each other and the meaner the conductor makes it sound, the more I like it.

    The recording I have is Horicio Guiterrez, when I first heard it I thought it was way too fast, but now I've come to really like it. This is actually true for Rachmaninoff's concertos as well, I prefer them faster, they way he personally played them, and so I feel that this is played really well, but the tempo is too slow for my taste.

      I don't know why, but i like Yuja Wang interpretation more. Her cadenza sounds good with the orchestra. I haven't seen others doing that unique sort of dinamics. Though i want some chords to play more painful... Kissin is good. He is not that type of people that are sitting on painful chords so much. But still sitting... Maybe it is right because of historical reason, but i xont really like it.

    This piece is the perfect length for a round of League:
    Movement 1 - getting to lane, early CS, get ganked at the Cadenza
    Movement 2 - shit's hit the fan, you're running around, fights breaking out everywhere
    Movement 3 - you're now desensitized, the game's a complete mess, but you're hanging in there
    Movement 4 - the final battle at baron pit, you lose the fight, they're at your base and you give up. You somehow win one last fight, team goes silent, you think you have a chance, then they teleport into your base and win anyways.
