- The 800 meters is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 meters is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-meter) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season, the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-meter track.
The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile.
Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough power to 'double up' in the 1500m. Only Alberto Juantorena and Jarmila Kratochvílová have won major international titles at 400m and 800m.

My dad was very lucky to get the bronze in the 1500m,him and Snell were training partners,so dad led that 1500 all the way in an effort to deflate Peter's kick in the last 50m,Snell was an absolute legend and all they did was train. Its pretty cool being able to watch this as dad passed away 20yrs ago.I have changed the spelling of my last name for social media.
That’s cool as I remember Dad and Peter, listening on the radio with my dad ,live on Radio Lol back in Taumarunui ❤️
Your dad was a Olympic's medalist, few or great athlete's archive this, he came into the race with a plan and archives it getting a medal. In the highest championship . Sorry for your lost , and condolences. Of your father. I wondered what you thought of the 1976 800 metres because it still gets to me how the outside lanes had no chance and why they changed it for this games
Davies and Snell had a legendary coach. Way before their time. Snell, with today's track and technology, would be pushing 1:40 flat.
Enjoyed this documentary, though could’ve had a bit more on the 1980 race, that was the one that got me hooked on athletics.
So glad I came across this and enjoyed watching every minute of it! Joaquim Cruz and Johnny Grey are my all time favorite 800m athletes! I hope there is a part 2 coming. Thanks for uploading 😊
If not dropping the actions in Moscow olympics this would have been one of the greatest documentaries in sports ever!
So, no coverage of the 1980 Moscow Olympic 800 metres? I know the USA boycotted it, but that's an unwarranted hole in the historical record.
1976 800m was the most disadvantaged final ever the outside lanes had no chance . and not surprised they changed it back to how it was before quickly after these 800 metres final
Discussing that they ignored the 1968 800 metres at Mexico. The win by Ralph Dobell was exceptional.
The same with the 1936 games, where Woodruff proved hitler wrong and brought home a gold
And Edwin Flack 1896 . But yeah Doubells victory in 68 was top drawer
Шикарное видео! Люблю видео на исторические темы
Thank you! I value your feedback.
Great video
Thanks...
Great piece of track and field history.
Great doc bu5 wondering why you didn’t finish?
Why no Mexico City 1968 final ?
Or 1936 Berlin
or 1980 moscow
Incredible to think that in 84 Coe had been ill for close to two years and got a silver and a double 1500m gold and Ovett had bronchitis but still made both finals!
Smells WR on the grass at Lancaster Park is one of the greatest athletics performances. Still I think the NZ record on all surfaces, 60 years later.
Smells?
@@stephenreeds3632 Snells
Thank you Peter Snell
Who won the 1980 final?
Why no mention of 1980?
Snell was a beast.
@Pivotal Running...is there a Part 2 of this Documentary? That will surely do justice to the men's 800 metres Olympics history.
These documentaries are great
Where is the commentary from?

This video could be an even greater piece on Olympic track history, except for a couple of glaring omissions:
1936 - USA's John Woodruff breaking the 4-time British winning streak.
1968 - Australia's Ralph Doubell setting a WR in the final.
Ovett?
@@martyn26.2 I initially that about Ovett in 1980 too, but they discuss Ovett's victory while discussing Cruz's 1984 win. I do like how they discuss in '80 and '84 of who ran great/bad strategies, the health issues, and the up-and-coming of Cruz.
Not giving the 1980 800m its due credit makes this documentary a joke, given the dramatic showdown between Coe and Ovett that took place. Perhaps it's related to the USA not being at the Moscow games.
Just learning about Wint, glory middle distance days fer Jamaica 😗🇯🇲
Moscow ?
Watching the 1976 800 metre final, I wonder if Steve Ovett would have got the gold medal in Moscow if the silver medal winner Belgian athlete Ivo Van Damme had not been tragically killed in a car crash later that year. Steve Ovett was well behind him in the 76 Final. Ivo was only 22 at the 76 Olympics. He also got silver in the 1500metres. Incredible talent, such a shame!
its an interesting one ,i guess we will never really know-the 1976 800 final is a bit of an anomaly tho as the running in lanes did for ovett in his lane draw.tbf ovett was really a 1500/miler but id say ovett was way ahead of van damme over the 1500/mile ,he was tripped/impeded in 1976 in the 1500 semi so like i say we will never really know-bit like who was really the best miler coe or ovett.we just dont knpw.theres some good books out there,in ovetts he credits van damme.it would have taken some athlete to beat ovett in the 77 world cup/1978 european champs mind, ovett had entered his prime years.the upshot is we dont really know how good ovett was as he didnt chase the clock in his prime years before the railings:( i think realistically van damme would have been wessinghagge of the 800m and he was a great athlete in his own right.the real geniuses were ovett and peter coe-imagine what peter coe would have done with ovett.......theres a great race from the euro juniors 800m on here in 1973 btw, ovett and van damme- thumbs up mate
Ovett was a kid in 76.
@@martyn26.2Van Damme was 11 months older then Ovett when he got the silver, and Ovett has never bettered the time Van Damme did in the Final ever. I am not saying he would have definitely beaten Ovett just that he would have been a contender.
To me, the best, Arzhanov.
Was it not 880 yards back in the day?
It was also slow cinder tracks
Never. International races were always in meters.
However, IAAF (tracks governing body) kept world records for meters and yards up until the late 70s...
That’s your takeaway?
Imperial distances were only used by Britain and former colonies. The rest of the world was always metric.
The only problem with this doc is that it doesn't mention the race times
In the Olympics it's more important to win than run fast - although the greatest 800m Olympic performance (in my opinion) saw Rudisha break the WR in 2012
Berlin 1936?
No Moscow 800m final, oddly.
No USA team. No interest.
Overtime from GB won
No Mexico City final either??
Ovett’s epic duel with Coe in Moscow 1980.
Update the video adding more 800m finals to 2021
I agree with you. Unfortunately it would get taken down.
Who ran in the most Olympic 800m finals? Johny Gray ran in four. Anyone close to that? (Google not helping me)
Thanks.
Ummm...what about Ralph Doubell in 1968 breaking the World Record?!
Very good point!!
Peter Snell put this man on modern synthetic tracks with modern shoes & I hate to think what times this man would of run he never ran on synthetic track only cinders all the modern greats he could of beaten them all could run his last lap in 52secs which would be able to beat all of them.
THis totally skips over Jim Ryun's world record in the 880 in which he also equalled the world record in the 800 of 1:44.3
I guess there are some other world records skipped also.
This is because it only shows Olympic finals, and Ryun never ran the Olympic 800m
Why is Woodruff's victory in Berlin left out? There are many experts that place him as one of the best 800 m runners ever.
As u can clearly see America, the winner USA153 shakes hands w.148..THATS FYNE
🙏✝️2:13
Johnny Gray blocks Nixon Kiprotich (Nelson Kiprotich?) and so William Tanui wins.
The hardest event (don’t @ me. I’ve done all of them)
Grande Joaquín kara
With out the hat Wottle would be just another runner
Of course, being Yanks, they can't show Moscow.
Racing lessons...don't look back!!!!
