Finland goes unrecognized most of the time in the world. But once in a while we shine.
We can easily undo the non-American record breakers by blaming it on doping, because they weren't Americans. Let's cut the crap and realize that American life is not the favored form of excellence.
8.6 no one ever faster/
That FRONT picture is 100% awesome, it +simply shows the DETERMINATION ON THE RUNNER FACES VAMOS !! !! and nothing else.
Viren was a beast. Prefontaine didn't run a smart race but what heart he had
I am no distance running guru, but I’m sure the slow pace had a lot to do with setting up the best kickers in the world for that last lap, the pre-was the one that made the race interesting with his guts
I know this sounds weird but every time I watch that race again I am rooting for pre-and feel bummed in the end when he doesn’t win in phase to not get on the metal stand even though I’ve watched it hundred times and no very well. the outcome well, I was a kid growing up in Eugene, Oregon at the time, and idolize him
I have always admired Paavo Nurmi, but what was President Kekkonen smoking when he said at 8:45 "...people explore the horizon for a successor, but none comes." This was during Lasse Viren's dominant double-double at the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympics! Matter of fact, Viren was a pall bearer at Nurmi's funeral. Viren can be seen during the quote and at 8:15 and 9:05.
Да , очень рад за Борзова!
“Cocky American. Really believes in him self”… no shit dude. He’s the guy. F@ck that announcer.
Great race 💪
In a fast run 800m, the winner slows down less than the others - they dont accelerate
WOW i remeber Steve great lost him to soon😢
Genius. He knew about the Goldielocks porridge: NOT TOO MUCH, NOT TOO LITTLE. JUST RIGHT.....
Lasse Viren,Champion
2 veces campeón Munich y Montreal ,inigualable y todavía se cayó,
Doble campeón olimpico
Un grande
Lasse Viren
If Pre was a Beatle, on this day, it was clearly Pete…
I put it on 2x and Prefontaine won in an astounding 7 min. and 43 sec.( roughly)😁!
Measure of heart.
🎉
Lasse Virén is a nice player. But why isn't he getting the same buzz as Marita Koch or Kratochvilova?
Daha kenyalılar etopyalılar para bulup olimpiyatlara katılamıyorlar hiç afrikalı yok
Viren fell and he managed to rejoin the lead group only 20 seconds after falling. How did he do that? And then he led most of the last 2 km and still won. How did he do that? And the commentators weren't even talking about the world record in the last 5 km but he broke the world record. They only referred to it after he crossed the finish line. How did he do that? And then he won the 5,000 for the double. How did he do that? And then he won the same double in Montreal in 1976 even though he had no great results for the years in between. How did he do that?
Sisu!
Gamoudy could certainly be in the podium if he hasn't fall and got injured.
Yea, he showed it in the 5000m. A great pity that he tripped to Viren's legs. (I've even jokingly said that Viren fell in purpose to trip his worst competitor.)
his 20.00 in the munich 200m final is his greatest result... 1972... electronic time...
Pre started to go and then he backed off. Then he started to go again and he backed off again. It was like he thought he could take them if he waited for the last 100m. He was probably surprised that they had more sprinting speed than he did. It's too bad he didn't get another chance in 1976 when he would have been older and stronger.
Vieläkin jännitän vaikka tiedän tuloksen😊
Pre 's cultfollowing has been a mystery to me. Was it his tactics of running in front and trying to get record time.?
Yes, he was the only distance star at the time who refused to play the kickers game, even if he was the fastest kicker in the race. He would instead push for records instead of just a last lap win. That's how he nearly won gold at his first and only Olympics at just 21yrs old.
@JasonLiberty lately watched BBCs Coleman live reporting Munchen 5000m. Cultfollowing was already there in 72. According Coleman

More about his unique style in that interview.
These Bud Greenspan Olympic films bring back such memories. The narrator is actually his brother, David.
Viren run the shortest distance. Pre maybe 100 m more than him
I grew up listening to this narrator and I swear he had one of the greatest voices ever.
"The burliest runner out there"
10 000 metres.
I, too, remember the series of Bud Greenspan documentaries honoring the greatness of Summer Olympic competitors from a variety of sports (Track, Swimming, Diving, etc...). To my big brother and I, Greenspan was a legend. Too bad the audio quality of this video is corrupted. Cutting in and out.
Thanks for uploading this, I remember I bought the race on a burned DVD on ebay some twenty years ago. Also thanks for the split times.
This was bowermans fault, instead of running like he always did, bowermans had him lay back for the 1'st 2 miles, horrible coaching !!!
Me encantó Muchas gracias 🏃
Although I don't think it would have guaranteed the gold, I think Pre's best bet was to run "his race", or to take the lead early and hold it, or at least to stay in lane 1, avoiding the extra distance from running on the outside. I wish we could see this race again, with Pre running all out, the whole distance, and without running the extra distance from being in lanes 2 and 3.
32:27 i think this is Yanko Rusev and next to him Naim Suleymanoglu
Where's Jack Lovelock ? in 1936
I wonder if Pre and his coach discussed this kind of possibility (SLOW pace) and what to do about it if so. I don't know of course, but this pace would have had to mess with Pre's mind. He did not like to race that way and I think if it had gone the way of a "TRUE" race (I don't like tactical races like this), Pre could have medaled.
borzov didnt look good in 1976 olympics when hasely crawford from trinidad smoked him
For Prefontaine. The win or nothing. He thought he got nothing, except for the respect of everyone watching today and for years to come.
not patience at the las lap specuially.
Yup. I'll always remember R. Lee Ermeys line - "You could have run for the bronze, you could have run for the silver. You ran to win. I couldn't ask for more from an athlete."
Love the brutally honest and colorful commentary about how slow the race was
Too little too late from Ian Stewart...in his own words he had 'a complete disaster' of a race...
Yet he got his only Olympic medal.
Considering the fact that Viren fell down, but quickly got back up and hustled back up to the pack is just remarkable.
Thank you for posting the entire race with splits and live commentary!
👏✌️✊️ to Finland from Sweden 🙂
