  • I bought this Engl Thunder 50 all valve combo "spares or repair" on e-Bay. Broken 5881 power valve and a duff tone pot.I left the video "as is" to show the struggles of the amature bodger. Not only in amp repair but in videoing stuff. Don't do this at home. The voltages in valve amps can exceed 500v. Even when unplugged, via the capacitors, it can still kill you. Not a tuition video. I don't know what I am doing so do not copy me.

A cool trick for that is to cut the snap ins off and the bend a piece of bus wire around either end of the four pins and flood it with solder. Then move your iron back and forth and it will drop right out. Then you only have to deal with heating the snap ins up and pulling them out.

Is the quality of this amp's construction good in your opinion? Worth to buy one?

Yes, one of my favorite amps. This is my second Thunder 50. The first one had reverb, this one does not. Engl no longer produce this model. I don't know where you are located but in the UK these go for about £350 in good condition. Almost all amps are on printed circuit boards these days. Nothing wrong with that constriction and it helps to keep the price down. This particular example has had a very hard life. I am pleased to have rescued it.
