Thanks for the info. That answers a question some of us Highpower shooters had. Those who were shooting compressed loads might see negative effects. Those shooting moly coated bullets on compressed loads would see it. And worst case would be those shooting moly coated VLD bullets, on a compressed load would really see it. Which we did!
We just never took the time to do the research to find out why. Now I know. To bad I quit shooting Highpower back in 2004! :) But that was because of my vision, and two surgeries for herniated disc’s.

Fresh ammo is the best ammo

I always tell this story when it comes to shooting 'old ammo' particularly when it comes to chasing lands. Back when I was still a heavy High Power Service Rifle shooter, I used the Berger 80gr VLD for the 600+ yard lines. I was always seating this round .010" into the lands. Thus, I would try to load my 600 yard line ammo the week before the match (roughly). One time, I was going to shoot a National Match 80XTC aggregate at one of the monthly matches at Camp Pendleton but didn't have any 'fresh' 600 yard loads. I found some 80gr VLDs that I had loaded up 2 years prior. I figured the throat on my gun had erroded enough after 2 years that the rounds would be jumping quite a bit. I ended up using them at the match and IIRC shot a 196-10x (only 4 9's). If you know Wilcox Range 103 at Camp Pendleton, it was typical conditions for 1300hrs with a 10-13mph left to right wind and that ammo did fine. Those 9's I shot were due to front sight fade (eye fatigue).

Awesome. I was on the team with him from 1999 till I retired in 2003. Eyes and two back surgeries put me out. I developed Harry’s 600 yard load during the 2000 National Matches. Harry did the rest and won the Service Rifle Championship, and was high Marine.
I saw he shot a 10X clean last weekend at 29 Palms with his Tubb gun.
Glad to meet you. Tell Harry I said hi.

I have ammunition loaded from 20 years ago that has been stored in ammo cans that still has the fresh powder smell and still shoots fine and I was diligent of keeping my cases wiped clean before storage , who knows how long it will last

John, I’m sure I speak for all the brits that watch your videos from across the pond... we thank you sir!!
I’ve noticed you like your outdoor attire lots of Arcteryx. I’m also MAD on it but check out a british manufacturer called “montane” as good as Arcteryx for 2/3 the price. Got some cool tactical wear too if your into multicam. Keep up the good work!

I can only speak to shots out to 500 yrds. As long as my components and loaded ammo are stored in a cool dry environment I've never had any trouble with failure to fire or degradation of accuracy out to 500 yrds. Mine still holds 3\4 to 1\2 MOA. Now I have been guilty of loading the night before like most shooters.

Love the intro. I love opening an ammo can and smelling the nitro glycerin(?). Kinda like opening a jar of powder before reloading.

See my video on powder I found that was surplus stuff from WWII. H4831 that I bought for $5/lb. Shot sub MOA on a rifle I built myself. The handloads were made the previous night and shot fine.
6.5CM. H4831 from very old rusty cans from WWII era. These were all compressed loads with 100grn Hornadys.

I once heard that most of the .50 ammo used in Desert Storm was manufactured during the 1950’s.

John just letting you know. The video quality of your show seems to have improved. It wasn't bad before it just seems much sharper with great skin tones.

So what you're saying is if you resize your brass and let it sit for a while it may spring back and cause less case mouth tension? And possibly expand the body of the case a little bit as well? I'm a new subscriber and find your channel very good. Quite a bit of information given. Keep up the good work.

Rotating ammo is difficult. The draught from 2011 to 2015 made it tough to get any of the usual flavors. So the older stuff was gold and left alone. The new stuff when you could find it was shot up real time. So the older stuff seems to work fine but I see tarnish on the brass and on 22LR the bullets looks dusty but all go bang. No performance issue that I see.

John, I have the same RCBS Chargemaster as you do. My manual says to empty the powder hopper after reloading to prevent damage to the hopper. Since you leave yours loaded, do you have any damage or discoloration to your hoppers?

    • @RealBlueGene
      @RealBlueGene 6 ปีที่แล้ว

From what I have read and seen in person; the type of damage you're referring to is more limited to double based powders because of the nitroglycerin content. I was kind of skeptical when I read about it because both double and singe based powders are shipped/stored in plastic containers, but I guess it has something to do with the harder plastic in powder hoppers.

I want to start reloading my own 6.5 creedmore match ammo but have no clue where to start as far as equipment. Can you shed some light on good reloading presses, case trimmers, tumblers, powder dispensers, dies etc...? Everything a new reloader would need. I’m not looking for the super entry level but right in the middle. What would be the most time efficient but still deliver match grade accuracy? Single stage press, multi stage or fully automated? Manuel powder dispensers and scales or digital automated ones? Redding, lee, Hornady? I just don’t know where to start. Thanks for any info you can provide!

Start and stay with a single stage press. Avoid hot loads and minuscule bullet jumps.
