  • Mario Maker 3 is still a long time away and we don't know for sure if we'll ever get it. That's why I started creating my own Mario Maker game in Unity! In this video we'll take a look at my attempt at rebuilding the Mummipokey which originated in NSMBDS.

    I have a suggestion: you should make the mummy pokey I *TINY* bit bigger so it stands out, you should also make the moving pokey body part move faster

      It would be cool if we added a multiverse pipe. Example: If you get into a pipe in the Mario Bros style you can change your style of play :)

    having many pre-made bosses like megamanmaker, but with the ability to make your own psuedo-bosses like mario maker, combining them will lead to endless possibilities

    If I remember correctly, the reason mummypokey immediately goes back into the ground is mario is right beside it when it comes out of the ground with only two segments.

    few more things i think would make it better:
    making it a bit bigger, like each segment + head being 2x2 instead of 1x1, the actual mummipokey isnt THAT big (i think), but its still quite a bit bigger than normal pokeys. it'll also make it more difficult and feel more like a boss.
    making particles happen while it moves would also mirror the original and look a bit more natural

    Don't forget, Snow Pokeys can also be jumped on and break apart once they're stomped. Normal Pokeys hurt Mario when jumped on instead.

    Looks very good! Suggestion: make it so that the particle effect appears a little bit BEFORE the Pokey emerges from the ground, to give the player a small opportunity to move out of the way. Just like the original.

    suggestion: make variations of the particle effects when emerging from the ground in different game themes, when you will make them (example: snow theme, white particles)

    I wish the Mummipokey (and all the other NSMBDS bosses) would appear in modern games. All they did was take an existing enemy and modify it, so simple yet creative.
    They did try this again with the Boss Sumo Bro, but sadly that was one boss.

    I'm super excited about this; the game looks fantastic! Something I would add to this is maybe a red or white flash (like Petey Piranha) when the Mummipokey gets hit to indicate damage a little more clearly.

    I have a great idea.
    So make a menu like the sound menu, but make it background blocks. They are one tile big, but can be stretched to any size. Then it also can't be grabbed during building since it's in a different 'layer'.

    I suggest the Sumo Bro Boss from NSMBU, he's one of my favorite bosses and I always thought it was a cool fight too.

    I'm not sure how so many people didn't notice this, but the snow pokey can be jumped on unlike the regular one, and it becomes a snowball if you do so.

    Suggestion: Make a boss(probably bowser or bowser Jr) that has selectable attack patterns so it can be unique every time.

    Man, this stuff is so freaking awesome. I'm so grateful for this channel. I would really suggest doing like you doing 10 enemies in one video. Like the little small ones in Mario Galaxy or in sunshine.

    Suggestion: Add a portal block, that when mario touches it, he will teleport to another portal block (and he will walk out of it to avoid any bugs). You should also make an option to make it a one-way portal.

    I think the boss should get bigger and bigger depending on how many lives he has left. For example, in the beginning, the boss is 5 heights and can go down to 2. But after taking a hit, it is 6 heights by default and can only go down to 3, with the addition of a lower probability. And finally, for its third life, the boss is 7 high and always at least 4 high when it comes out of the ground, with an even lower probability to be only 4 high. Thus, it adds more challenge as the 3 parts of the boss fight progress.

    The sprite looks awesome! My only suggestion is that there should be some slight particle effects prior to emerging, and when its projectile hits the ground, the fractured bits should have a bit more outward momentum, so it looks like more of an impact than just crumbling. Great work! 😁

    I think it would be neat if the segments played the same animation that's played when the mummipokey pops out of the sand when they hit a ground tile. Like an ancient mummified corpse or ancient decaying fabric poofing into dust when disturbed. The segments that are still underground should also just be culled upon defeat. It looks a little awkward when they pop through the floor.

    i would love to see you add more movement options like rolling, wall-jumping and the air-leap mario has in more modern titles that would be cool.
    ive been thinking about it since mega man maker has a tab for adding the ability to do these actions

    Little secret about the fight: The amount of segments the pokey has determines for how long it will stay above ground. Having more segments causes it to stay vulnerable for longer.

    This is awesome that you have been recreating the bosses. Like with Lakithunder and Petey. It's funny that with this and also with Lakithunder you hadn't created the normal counterpart before starting the video yet, and with this boss and Petey, the bosses can be jumped on sometimes but not their normal counterpart, their like, less threatening then their normal counterpart in a way, well kind of, just like how in Super Mario 64, the King Bob-omb is less threatening than the regular bob-ombs and definitely less than the chuck ya, which is funny. Yeah, and also the ice pokey can't be stomped either, like only the pokey's normal counterpart can, and the helmet's aren't proteecting them but instead protecting Mario's feet and making themselves vulnerable, also there's the Pokey Mummy in Paper Mario which is blue, but there's the Mummy Pokey and that's a whole different story.

    If i remember correctly, mummy pokey only truly digs back down immediately if it spawns with minimal segments. You might mirror this by making the maximum surface time proportional to the number of segments.

    Good job! Looks great so far! I am only missing the telegraphing of mummy when it comes out of the ground. In the original it will show some particles for a short time where it will come out. But nonetheless I love the series!

    Idea: Add 4 difficulty options for each boss, indicated by different color schemes. Mummipokey's first difficulty, which would be a greener hue to match a regular pokey, could nerf its height to a 4 max Instead of 5, have him move slower, and stay out longer after surfacing. The second difficulty would be the default that was coded here. The third could be more of a purplish, with him moving faster, remaining vulnerable for a smaller amount of time, attack more often(projectiles could also be faster), and having an additional segment, for a max of six. The final difficulty would be a light blue, matching snow pokeys. This difficulty would upgrade the spit attack to shoot 3 projectiles in a kind of shotgun way, if that makes sense. The middle projectile would move fast, while the other 2 would move at a normal speed. The dead zone may need to be adjusted to accommodate this. Mummipokey would also spit even more frequently. I would love seeing this in your game!

    Hey, nice work! Since this is a boss enemy, you could add a sense of impact when landing on it's head by implementing a milisecond or 2 of hitstun.

    Look into bezier curves for the animation. It makes things move more naturally, and will definitely improve the quality of the pokie's animations.

    I love that you are recreating the NSMBDS bosses, but others that I think you could add are Pum Pum in the regular styles, Kamek (like in New Super mario Bros Wii, I'm not talking about the regular magikoopas) or the bosses that are in the official SMM2, but I guess that last one is already on your list!
    Also are the bosses going to be able to turn big with a mushroom?

    I'd like to make a suggesting for a boss King goomboss, even though he has not appeared in any 2d mario games I think this is something unique to work on like his appearance in sm64ds where he grows in size every hit and summon goombas and over gommba bosses such as the one is ds.
    An idea I came up with is that he will charge around the battle field and summon goombas (any easy weak enemies like goombas and koopas ar destroyed by the charged) after first hit he grows which means in phase 2 he cant simply be jumped on the same level as mario so the player has to use the goombas to jump over or on him, (goombas would be summoned before the charge Sotherton player won't get hit by impossible to doge attack) 3rd phase grows again and becomes faster now the goombas he summons is now 4 and 2 are spiked topped goombas making it harder to doge the goombas but the regular goombas allow him to still be jumped (Goomboss could be given a jump attack now even before he summons any goombas) this is one idea another could be running into a wall makes him stuned or that ground pouding is only way to damage the boss like the big goomba in nsmbds.

    Suggestion: When the pokey digs up, it should move a bit upwards before landing to almost signify acceleration.

    Some suggestions
    Fire snakes
    The jumping fireballs in mario bros 3. Add an option for it to leave temporary mini fireballs where it was before it jumped.
    Blue See Saws
    A see saw that will fall if tilted for too long. Perfect for sky levels or a challenging speedrun!
    Moving tiles
    Very important for mario games! Useful for making tanks
    Fake tiles
    The tiles you can walk through. Perfect for hiding secrets, or some unique levels!

    I know you're focusing on the DS bosses, but I'd love to see all the unique koopaling fights from wii, 3ds, wii u and MM2

    I love all of these videos, but I do nevertheless always feel like there's a small spark missing in authenticity. In this case, the animations seems to be missing their mark as to what made the original boss feel alive, but I'll try to keep it short and purely constructive. Firstly, the standard *original* movement animation has a lot more wobble to it, where the segment below the head almost pushes mummipokey along. Secondly, the most noticeable feature, is that hit animation could really do with the swing from side to side and extra particles. Finally, the re-surfacing of the pokey is displayed through the burrow animation a lot earlier than it actually surfaces, like a warning, which gives room for it to leave the ground a lot faster. Of course, you have still remade everything very well, and I honestly can't complain, but I thought perhaps my feedback may go somewhere.

    When you make Dry Bowser, (which I'm certain you'll make) the fireballs should do 2 damage. EX: You're fire Mario, you get hit by Dry Bowser's fireball, you're now small Mario.

    Suggestion: in the original, when he came up with fewer segments, he would dig back down more quickly. I think that would make the boss fight better, so it's not as easy to stomp on his head. also he kinda looks a little too much like a normal sized pokey with a different color, you should make him slightly bigger than a normal pokey.

    Suggestion: you should make a king bob omb boss from sm64. It could throw regular bob ombs and they could break brick blocks and you would have to throw them back at him three times.

    I think the Mumipokey works really good as a standard enemy rather than a boss. Only my opinion though

    I knew this'd happen, but why not but a little spin on the Gigoomba? Maybe have it jump about, causing shockwaves, just to make it stand out more rather than just being a Goomba to ground pound 3 times.

    suggestion make the Mummipokey kinda react to getting jumped upon i really couldn't tell in the boss fight if he was jumped upon and retreated or just hid from Mario. Maybe even add some sound effects at least. But like you have said this is a prototypes and can change.

    I have a suggestion: More playable characters like Wario, Waluigi, Daisy Rosalina, and lastly Princess Peach.
    And Princess Peach should be able to float in the air for a couple seconds like in super Mario 3D world
