    Love Robins. They also have an uncanny habit of turning up at just the right moment to remind you of a lost loved one.

    These are so great!! I think what’s great about the robin is when you hear if you just have a quick look around, you’ll see him singing and it’s helpful to visualise to remember 🥰

    These videos are great. I love how you share enthusiasm for the personality of the bird and how it marries with their song ☺️☺️☺️

    Loving these Lucy! As an aspiring ecologist there's so much to learn and birdsong was one of those things that just seems insurmountable at first, so thank you so much for this series :)

    Looking forward to seeing the difference between the robins, dunnocks and wrens. I only saw/heard dunnocks last year. This year I've got a robin so perfect timing for this helpful video.

    Did you learn all of this just by observing birds? I’ve wanted to learn about birdsong for years but have found it such an impenetrable subject. This definitely helps though 😄

    Loving these lessons Lucy - thank you! I had a question if that was ok - regarding both blackbirds and robins. I’ve been very close to both of them recently and noticed they sometimes sing really, really quietly at times - almost as if they are humming to themselves. Maybe other species do it too but I wondered if you might know why?

    • @LucyLapwing
      @LucyLapwing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks so much! And yes indeed they do - this is called a 'subsong'. Robin's subsongs are one of my favourites, they're almost like whispers. They sing in their throat, often without even opening their beak. Subsong is encountered outside of breeding season - it's often done by birds that're too young to fully sing (i.e. first year juveniles), or by adult birds who's singing abilities have gone a little dormant due to lack of breeding hormones getting them all pumped up. It's lovely to listen to - I love your description of them humming!! Hope that helps :)

    What do the quick sharp noises that they make mean?

  • @joemyers5302
    @joemyers5302 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I listen out for the tone and sweet slightly longer notes they do, especially when Blackcaps and Garden warblers are nearby which i struggle to differentiate if it wasnt for that sometimes.

    • @LucyLapwing
      @LucyLapwing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I find the sweet tone really helps them stand out! :)

    How do you tell the difference between a robin song and a dunnock song?

    • @LucyLapwing
      @LucyLapwing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is quite a tricky one - I remember suddenly getting it, like "OH!". I will be covering this in a video very soon - but I get dunnock by filtering out wren and robin. It's like a wren without the rattle, and like a robin without the pauses and confidence. So a cross between the two. Hopefully I'll explain better in my video! :)
