  • Karen offers a variety a ways to add value, collectability and beauty to her limited edition giclees. One way she does this is by adding a hand-drawn, one-of-a-kind remarque or "artist's mark" to the print. This short video demonstrates the process of adding a remarque to one of the first reproductions of her newest painting "Russian River Steelhead".

    Hi,
My wife and I met you and your husband at the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival a few years back.
We purchased one of your inspiring artworks of a Swordfish.
We have gotten so many compliments on it hanging in our living room.
We are blessed that you are relocated and happy.
You and your husband make an incredible team, we wish you much success in the coming new year!

Thanks for the question, @Gregory Clarke-Johnsen. I usually use pencil and pen & ink for my remarques. I most often add the remarque to the paper itself, but some clients request it on the mat. When I add color to a print, I refer to is as hand-embellishing. In my catalog, a remarque is separate from hand-embellishing, but many clients order both. While I generally tend to only embellish and remarque limited edition giclee prints, I have certainly seen other artists remarque open editions. -K

I do offer hand-embellishing on my limited edition giclees. In most cases, I use the same media I used on the original when I hand-embellish, and usually I am using the same substrate (i.e., an original watercolor on watercolor paper is printed as a limited edition giclee on watercolor paper and hand embellished with watercolor). Because of the quality of the giclee printing process and the archival pigment inks, a well cared for reproduction may actually outlive an original. Hope that helps.

Would it be appropriate to remarque a painting of a sailboat with the lake it was taken on?

Hi Karen, I enjoyed your video on remark,, and have a three questions.
You mentioned that you added color to the giclee... considering the delicate nature of a giclee surface what material did you use add color,,, eg. colored pencils., acrylics?
Is retouching the art piece,, say with additional color considered a remark ?
I noticed that you added a remark to a giclee from a numbered set.
Have you ever heard of just adding the remark to a open edition print, to make the print unique.

Hi again, I see that some artists paint over canvas giclees. , knowing that oils are acidic and need a good ground , do you have any idea what medium could be used over a canvas giclee with longevity in mind ? The few that I have seen look like they are painted with oils....Thanks again.
