In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. As a potter, it makes me feel so good when people show off Pottery. Not only because of the time and effort that goes into it but to have someone else appreciate what they have made. For myself, I have no biological children and I think of my Pottery as a small part of me that will carry-on after I leave this earth. And I hope one day someone like you will be excited to show off that little piece of my heart that still exist.

This vlog about Jess's pottery collection fits so well with the intentionality that Roots & Refuge promotes: not just buying "things," but supporting small-business makers and choosing to place things in our homes that have meaningful stories. ❤ Such a good reminder of living to thrive and not just survive.

My heart dropped to the floor when I saw the title of this video! I said to myself just calm down and watch it! 😅 This is like a full circle end of my big dreams moment here! (Other than seeing you drinking out of one of my pieces in your garden while you teach me to grow food❤) oh the blessings you spread to so many! Thank you again for being a light! And sorry but you didn’t show enough mugs for me! I want like the 2 hour video version of them all still 😂

"kintsugi" is the japanese art of repairing broken pottery in a decorative fashion, adding gold flake to the glue so the break is highlighted in the finished repair. the cup or bowl is preserved, and made more unique and beautiful because of the damage.

I did that with a pottery bowl my son sent me as a gift after it arrived broken. He was disappointed when I told him it arrived broken but was every happy when he came to visit and saw that I had put it back together with gold colored epoxy and had it on display in my living room with the cracked part visible.

I have loved handmade pottery for a long time, but it just wasn't in the budget. I have a few that I've found in thrift stores that I enjoy. Thanks for sharing your collection and all of the stories that accompany them. You're such a blessing to these artisans. I am glad that you're using your platform to highlight beautifully crafted works of art!

I remember the day you showed the mug from your friend who passed away and I sat and cried for you and my friend that I had recently passed away as well. My husband took me out that day and we stopped by a local pottery store and I picked up a mug to have my coffee with to remember my friend each morning while I am having my coffee. You have a beautiful collection and the stories that they trigger are just as precious. Thanks for sharing your collection with us.

Jess, I can really feel the potter's energy in their art. Handmade is special. Pottery, glass, paintings & stained glass etc one of a kind. It was made especially for me to find at the thrift store, Etsy to admire & commit to. When things break, I save shards to use in mosaic, jewelry or decorate succulent bowls. Same with fossils, shells pretty rocks! I am the architect of what gives meaning & beauty to my life. Nothing is wasted. Why viewers would criticize your clay collection is beyond me. Don't close your heart to beautiful and meaningful please❣It is the Higher vibration. ❤

My dear Jess…I cannot express in words how much I adore you and how happy I am to have found your channel several years ago! I took a pottery class in high school as well. Absolutely loved it! For various reasons I never did anything with that love but it was just something about holding that mud or dirt in my hands…it was like feeling the earth for me. I wonder if that was the draw? Anyway fast forward to today…over the past several years I’ve been buying pottery too because you told me that I could buy the lovely things and not feel guilty! So I did! I probably have 20 mugs and I don’t drink coffee! Lol but I also have bowls and tumblers that I adore every time I take them out of the cabinet. It brings me so much joy just like watching your videos. Thank you SO MUCH for all that you’ve taught me…yes a 54 year old woman…I needed you and your wisdom with your beautiful poetic heart and rose colored glasses outlook on life. I just wanted you to know that there’s so many hearts and lives you’ve touched. I don’t think you could even fathom. I got to get a few bowls and one or two mugs from Hailey Rose because I fell in love with yours. No one is allowed to touch that one! Lol one potter I think you’d love is on IG as mudslingingpottery. She’s a female owned small business that does really sturdy cool designed mugs and other things. Much love to you! Thank you for all that you do! 💜 Tamara

Oh Jess you have a beautiful mug collection 🥰. I love how you shared different stories for each one. I did pottery when I was in high school too, and now as a 40 something woman I have taken it up again. I love it every Tuesday night is my pottery night, I do classes and it’s my time to be me not mum or wife just me, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Thankyou so much for sharing your life with us 🥰😘. Would you believe I’ve met another roots and refuge follower at my son’s primary school in Australia. She spotted one of your shirts that I was wearing and came up and said hi, and now we friends. Iam so blessed.

Hey Jess. Thanks for such a homely video of all your lovely collection. It was extremely nostalgic for me because I revisited memories I have had watching you over the years. I remember your SM getting you the Mug from Hayley and her Mom, and remember you opening your last mug from Hayley too. I cried when I watched you open that mug and just seeing her creations again and hearing that her Mom had picked up the baton is beautiful.
We all watch your journey in the garden and to see your journey through pottery is so sweet.
Thanks for the real life transparency.
Wishing you all a beautiful day from her in the UK 🌻

I am so happy to see your collection! I will eventually be buying one from @rosaliebrushworks that honors my late dog/furbaby, Chance. I already reached out to her and she's such a sweet, passionate woman. I was going to use my birthday money to do so but decided I should finish building my garden first...so I'm just waiting until it's financially responsible to do so. My hubby was out of work for 8 months and only just started working a month ago.
I highly encourage others, if able, to buy gifts from small businesses, makers, and creators. They end up having so much more meaning when it's something not mass produced plus they often last longer and can even become something passed down for generations.

I really got into it because I wanted to have a lard container and mixing bowls like my grandma Alma. I can’t comprehend why anyone would ever criticize you or anyone similar to you. You are such a kind soul. I started listening to your podcast and I’m hooked. You woke up something in me that has helped me question my world differently, I see beauty in things I was too busy to see before and it’s also brought me healing. You, my friend, are such a blessing to me and so many others. I have always noticed your pottery mugs, your ability to decorate. You see beauty in all things. My home looks similar to yours. Very calm, organic and I have plants everywhere. They make my head stop spinning in this weird world we live in. I’m worried that my praising you will make me sound like a stalker so I’ll stop. 😂 I’m just thankful for the wonderful women I’ve found on here and other social media platforms and how y’all make my heart sing and help me in so many ways.

While your mugs tug at your heart strings for Haily Rose, never feel silly for it. Mine is kitchen aprons for my Mom who passed away 24 years ago because she always had a apron on when in the kitchen. Last year when getting more serious about canning, I knew the smart thing was to wear an apron. I had some tears initially but then I made it a mission to overcome my sorrow. I made up my mind to honor my Mom instead of mourning her by wearing aprons. She's always with me but now she over my shoulder guiding me in my canning journey and telling me how proud she is that I am carrying on many generations of family tradition with canning, food preservation and gardening.
Thank you for your wonderful videos and your encouragement to dream. - Rhonda

How great to watch your mug collection Jess. Monday morning in bed jus had my breakfast and I am sipping my black coffee out of a cup which I have purchased about 25 years ago in a "Dollar Tree" type of shop in Sydney Australia. I bought a set of 6 bit bigger than a short black cup. The reason I bought it because has coffee beans painted on them and the word coffee. Now I only have 2 left and I am sad if one day I don't have them but I am using them every day. I actually purchased another set which was a real shot size and gave it to my girlfriend. I have other cups like Koala painted but the coffee beans is the one for me. Since I moved to the country and even a bit before friends started to give me mugs with cow pictures. I do have a few but love my cows so I don't use them much so I don't break them. Love your collection. Maybe you can write a "coffe table book" with photoes and the stories with your mug collection and put the book out in your coffe house. I think people would enjoy sipping they coffee and looking through your mug memories.☕️ ❤

It's way more fun to set a table with eclectic pieces of hand crafted and loved pottery. I don't cry too much if one breaks, it just means I have room and it's time to find another treasure. I have admired many of your mugs from past videos- thanks for sharing!

Jess, you need to take a day trip up to a place up in North Carolina called Sea Grove! It is a very small town north of Rockingham, NC that is full of small independent potters. If you go, the best place to have a meal is the local grocery store deli/eatery. I kid you not! Really, the only other restaurant is the Hardees in the gas station out by the highway. They have a pretty large store near the high way that sells the various artists work I think by commission but if you drive the very short distance into the town you can find each potters place. My current favorite place is called “Dirt Works” . Love, love, love pottery!

I love the look of handmade pottery. I never got to try pottery in school because my anxiety disorder/ agoraphobia got so bad I left public school for homeschool partway through 10th grade, but I remember loving working with clay in lower grades and always thought it'd be fun to try the pottery wheel someday. I collect Winnie the Pooh dishes (well, practically anything Pooh but am focusing on housewares). When I was little, one of the few dreams I had about when I was on my own was to have a house decorated entirely in Winnie the Pooh. At the time I wished it, Pooh was on everything. But by the time I was on my own, he was harder to find, and I couldn't afford the prices anyway. So I changed my decor to bees and honey, figuring that'd go well with any Pooh items I could get. But these past few years have been really good for finding Pooh dishes at discount stores like HomeGoods. And Hobby Lobby has had several nice wall art. I've had to stop buying mugs because I have a full cupboard. My favorite is taller and was made to look like a tree trunk, and looks like Pooh's gotten himself wedged in a honey tree. His head and arms are sticking out on the front and his rear end is sticking out the opposite side. The handle also has holes in it for storing a honey dipper. I don't drink coffee and only drink hot tea when I'm cold, but I use the mugs for most beverages.

I’ve always loved pottery too! I also tried my hand at making it and realized I was not good at it! I made several pieces that I’m proud of, but decided I’d be better off supporting people who were truly talented at it. I feel very blessed to have been able to get many of Haley’s mugs before she passed away too. She was such a talented and sweet person. I also have one of her “wheat” mugs and one of her hand made mugs. They are cherished for sure. I also have a couple of the Miller White mugs. She’s also a very talented potter. Annnnd of course, i have a lot of the Old Dog Pottery pieces. Mugs, tumblers, bowls, etc. I do have to say, I wouldn’t have many of these pieces if it weren’t for you. Happy and content is the person who can show grace and gratitude for all. It matters not if they have great bounties or may be lacking, happiness comes from being grateful. Yup, grateful...period! Even grateful for others who have been blessed. I am thankful you share with all of us. I am so happy for you. It serves no purpose to be envious or critical, it does not bring happiness to shame or put down. Shame on y'all who find reasons to bring others down or criticize. Bless the Sowards for showing us how to dream, to work hard and live rich. Bless you all. Be happy! ❤❤❤

There's a newer word, compersion, that essentially means "being happy for someone else's happiness." I have SO MUCH compersion for your pottery. Watching you light up over the years as you show your mugs brings so much joy. Thanks for the opportunity for compersion.

When I seen this video in my box I was immediately so excited and hesitant at the same time. I seen Rosalie post that last mug she made for you, I knew you would love it ❤ Rosalie is really keeping Hailey’s memory alive. Their pieces are just beautiful. Enjoy your collection Jess, I know it’s more than just the beauty if a piece of pottery.

I just received my Wild Pines blueberry mug yesterday. I loved the way her mountain scape mug felt in my hand (it’s my daily mug). So many wonderful potters! I did have to step away from some of the more popular potters because the stress of trying to get a mug in a restock that sells out in 5 seconds was taking the joy out of it. Nothing beats tea in handmade pottery!

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing every mug and hearing what you love about each of them! I also love the feel of a mug most when picking out what one to use. There is something so soothing or comforting about a good feeling mug that fits well in your hands!! ☕ 🍵
Thanks for taking the time to share your collection with us!

Jessica, I'm sorry to hear about the broken people who can't be happy for someone else. You are a hard working woman, a loving mother, and a skilled gardener. I don't know how you do it all, so don't allow anyone to diminish that. I feel the same way as you about a mug that feels right, it's part of the coffee ritual.

I just came across your post and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I am not a potter but I have been collecting and using handmade ceramics my entire adult life. You have such a beautiful collection. Thank you for sharing this with all of us! I also love handmade porcelain and one if my favorite potter does both. (William Schran in Virginia)

Jess, I know what it is to have a special relationship with the mug for my morning and all day coffee! I have a small garden of perennial flowers in my front yard and the broken mugs are nestled between the edging plants. I think back to using the mugs when I weed. It brings a smile to me and I hope some other people! From western Massachusetts USA with love. :-)

Absolutely wonderful collection! Thank you for sharing with us. What you said about the reality of grief hitting hard sometimes - so true. I had a housewarming party about 12 years ago, and a friend brought me a handmade tea mug and several teas in tins as a gift. I never knew the potter, but a short time later, my friend was killed in a freak vehicle accident in Alabama on a main highway there. I treasure that mug above others in my cabinet because the giver was a treasured friend and I think of her when I use the mug - and for a long while, that mug was "put up" and not used because I was not ready for the flood of grief I felt when I saw it. Now though, it is a sweet memory of our last time spent together and I toast her whenever I have hot tea from that mug.

I lived in Virginia for almost twenty years. When we would till our garden shards of pottery would show up. Modern pottery as well as Native American pottery. It was so cool to find these shards. Survival is amazing! We would find pottery shards with the pattern of a corn cob empty of the kernels! So interesting! One of my favorite pieces is a pitcher with a pineapple pattern of crochet on it! It came from Floyd VA. Thank you for sharing!!

It’s a great collection Jess. Thanks for sharing it with us and telling us the stories and why you love each one. I feel the same way about some of my treasures. I am especially glad that you made this video because lately I’ve been too sick to do much housework and well meaning friends offer to come help me with it, but their idea of helping is to organize a garage sale to get rid of my “clutter”! I try to explain to them that it’s not clutter, it’s treasured memories of the people I love, and places I have loved, and special memories of people who have passed on, and all those little moments of peace and happiness in my life. Being younger and healthier than I am, they think that memories last forever and you don’t need a physical cue to remind you of small moments. They tell me that I can keep my memories, just get rid of the clutter. They don’t have to take the pharmaceuticals that rob them of deep emotional feelings and special memories and leave them with brain fog. So they try to shame me for having too many possessions from a long and well lived life. I explain to them that I have down sized many times and that I have given away everything that I didn’t really love, and even several large items that I did really love but couldn’t keep. What I have left is nonnegotiable. I thank them for their kind offer to help and help when I feel up to another visit, I will think of them, but for now, I am tired and need to rest. But what I am actually thinking is, “I am now done defending myself, my priorities and my beloved belongings against your misplaced shame. Please go away and if I ever, in a moment of weakness think to open my door to you again, this beloved object will help me remember how you tried to make me feel for having it and enjoying it and I will go back to enjoying my pets and my beautiful treasures and pretend that I am not home. I will keep what I love and my beautiful memories and you may keep your feelings of superiority and the shame that you seem to love to bestow upon any others who do not capitulate to your desires as to how they should live their lives.” It’s a good thing that I am old and probably won’t be here for the Great Reset. Owning nothing and being happy about it, is not going to work out well for me, nor for the people who try to enforce it.
