Ol' Ramblin' Jack was who I wanted to grow up to be like from the first time I heard him explain the song he was going to sing. Then he started strumming and picking and singing that song. It knocked my socks off and it was a good thing, cuz I needed something to wipe my eye with. My first record of his got plumb worn out from the needle. His stories were a never ending source of amazement, filled with pathos, humourous phrases, and down right morals. He touched my soul. I think I learned to play guitar pretty well from his records, but realized I would never grow up to be like Jack. He is a very unique gent. I have travelled many miles to see him in person in my Montana home territory, which he also claims a home. He is an old dude now, as I am, with not much time till our respective dirt naps. There will NEVER be another feller on this earth like Ramblin' Jack. I genuinely wish him many days filled with happy trails, music, and more stories. I consider myself one of his greatest fans -- he has influenced my life in more ways than he can ever know. And I know also I'm in a long line of fans that feel the same way.

Jack symbolizes the true American spirit without a doubt.

Thank you for a wonderful tribute, I have been influenced by his persona and work since 1961 when in my teens and saw and met him in Elko Nevada at the Cowboy Poetry Gatherings. 'Beyond the Music' is indeed true about Ramblin' Jack Elliott. ⚓

I saw Ramblin' Jack at the Ash Grove, on Melrose, in the 60s. I was hoping for some songs and he sang a few. However he did his own impression of Peter Ustinov's "Grand Prix of Gibraltar at great length. Ustinov did it better, but he couldn't sing Diamond Joe or Rovin' Gambler. I liked Jack's Ramblin' better when it was his own stories. BTW: he was the first person I heard sing "Me and Bobby McGee and it's still my favorite version.

I borrowed a fellow's cowboy hat so I could sing Diamond Joe in the sub at Uof M in Missoula, MT in fall of '69. I also sang Danville Girl. A guy came up to me and asked where these songs were from. We later became good friends and I think I had introduced him to the missing link in his life. Peter Rowan, Peter Coyote, Bob Weir, Ian Tyson were my kind of people, as was my friend and side kick, ol' Denny Ryan. After all these years, when I get into a sticky situation, I ask myself, what would Ramblin' Jack do about it.
