I know you’ll read these comments after the series, but this and the next episode are very special for old Who fans like me. Seeing one of the most popular non-show stories adapted into the show was amazing and they did a terrific job.

Their director was a guy named Edgar Wright. Nick Frost also co-starred, having had little acting experience before this point. She may not have risen to the same renown as her collaborators, but she's extremely talented in her own right.
They actually did explain how the husband got The Sun in the last episode, but it was bink-and-you'd-miss-it. The captain, his wife, had been illegally harvesting material from the sun's corona as cheap fuel(?) and had accidentally scooped up one of the sun creatures in the process. The implication was that he'd come into contact with it that way.

It was less the acknowledgement of the first seven and more Eight specifically, since that was the first time he was outright referred to as a canon version of the Doctor.

However, I'm going to move on and say number seven, and talk about my other favourite band, which is the Housemartins. I don't know if anyone remembers the Housemartins, but the best gig I ever went to was at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in about December, it must have been 1990, and the Housemartins were playing, and it was quite simply the best gig I've ever been to. They split up quite soon afterwards; I don't know what that tells you about that particular event. I'm sitting in the TARDIS now, and I'm going to wind up soon, but not before I make a few strange noises with my mouth that will go somewhere along the lines of bingle bongle dingle dangle yikkety-doo yikkety-dah ping pong lippy tuppy too tah. And twenty-three. If anything goes wrong, if they find us, Martha, then you know what to do. Open the watch. Everything I am is kept safe in there. Now, I've put a perception filter on it so the human me won't think anything of it. To him, it's just a watch. But don't open it unless you have to. Because once it's open, then the Family will be able to find me. It's all down to you, Martha. Your choice. Oh, and thank you.
When Tim said "Martha" it would've been because he knew it from the watch. Schoolboys at a private school and servants wouldn't have been on 1st name terms with each other. Very formal and hierarchical.
I like to think they knew each other since Martha also knew Tim's name. And Tim, having no friends, also seems like kind of child who would speak to staff purely because he'd be lonely, having no friends in a private school.
There is a quick line at the start - that the family only have a short time to live - so he only has to hide for a short time. That's why Martha thinks it will all be over in a month.
Our pets learn by watching us. Dogs, (especially) get upset at delivery people because no matter how many times they come up to the door, you never let them in.
In a parallel universe, Jeremy Baines is an exiled prince called Viserys Targaryen. He was stupid and cruel. He was given a golden crown by his brother-in-law while his sister watched. After his crowning, he was forever a changed man.
You know you're just spoiling "Game of Thrones", right? You may not be saying things outright but you imply enough to figure it out. This is not clever, this is ruining people's fun.
Jessica Hynes (Nurse Redfern) is amazing. Her and Tennant reunited for a series called "There She Goes" from 2018-2020, with a one off special in 2023, parents of a daughter born with a chromosomal disorder.
They've worked together two more times! They were actually in a movie together called Learners that came out before they did the Doctor Who episodes. Then they were both in Nativity 2 in 2012.
I absolutely agree that Harry Lloyd gives an absolutely brilliant performance. As mentioned by others, this two-parter is an adaptation of a novel written during those dark years between the original series and the revival. There's some significant revisions - it's pretty impressive how Paul Cornell took his excellent novel and reworked it into an excellent TV story.
Edwardian attitudes at a pre Great war Public ( private to you ) school certainly grate with today's sensibilities . It's an uncomfortable one for Martha ,remaining constantly loyal to the Doctor in difficult circumstances and seeing him getting attracted to another when he's actually human . The ruthless family are chilling foes . Part two should be a goodie .
@funnylilgalreacts i would suggest never looking at these comments. There are multiple season story arcs. Though the dr who people seem better than the battlestar ones
One of the favourite 2 parters of Dr Who, hands down. And the Sydney and Verity shout outs always get me. Whovians certainly owe them a lot. And yes! A young Harry Lloyd! I have no idea why, but there’s just something fitting about a descendant of Charles Dickens acting in Dr Who.
Human Nature/Family of Blood is my favourite DW story, full stop. Lots has been said about another episode this season, but honestly you can keep it. Human Nature/Family of Blood has no gimmicks, just real shit done right. It has Martha being a COMPLETE utter fucking bad-ass, getting some time to showcase how she does on her own, and also actually engaging with the reality of her travelling in time as a black woman, it has Tennant getting to stretch his acting muscles with a new character, it has incredible performances from the whole cast (I hardly want to highlight anyone because EVERYone does a phenomenal job but Harry Lloyd and Tennant both do particularly amazing jobs), it has an enjoyably twisty plot, it has gorgeous dialogue, it has a really cool, under-the-radar place in the season arc, and it's a historical episode that actually feels like it's saying something instead of feeling a little like walking through the kids section of a history museum. I adore it. For a long time I really wanted the writer to take over when Moffat was done as showrunner, just on the strength of these two episodes.
I made this scarecrow costume one year for Halloween, it’s way creepy in person too. The party I went to the poor dog would immediately turn and run out of room if I had the head piece on, had to just leave it off as I felt bad scaring the dog.
The music that plays when you see the little girl with the red balloon is from the 1989 story Remembrance of the Daleks, which also features a creepy little girl. (Side note: Remembrance starred the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, who was also the Doctor in the novel upon which this episode is based).
It's a classic children's song, sung in playgrounds up and down the country. I dunno if Murray Gold deliberately used the same tune as in Remembrance, or just instinctively knew which tune goes best with "creepy schoolgirl". =:o}
So during the part that Martha fast forwarded though they had David say a bunch of lines. So they would have less editing cause it would actually just be speed up footage. But because it was gonna be fast forwarded and not actually be heard in the the episode David just said a bunch of nonsense. The unedited version where it's not sped up is easily found on TH-cam. It's funny. You should watch it. Even though it was just nonsense everyone (for the lols) sees it as cannon so it adds in some funny lore to the Doctor. And future Doctors make references to it.
I still refer to Harry Lloyd as Brother Mine when I'm talking to my family. This was the first place I saw him. The video already showed that you know he is Viktor in Arcane, but he was also in Game of Thrones, BBC's Robin Hood and Counterpart.
33:48 The Doctor says at 16:43 that the Family will die out fairly soon if he can stay hidden from them. Harry Lloyd (Baines/Son of Mine) and Rebekah Staton (Jenny/Mother of Mine) do play creepy really well. In fact the early scenes where they’re regular people feel so strange to me bc I always think of them as the creepy versions.
I think the scarecrows might have been a nod to the old ITV kids show Worzel Gummidge, the title character (an animate sentient scarecrow) played by Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor.
You can actually watch rules 5-22 (kind of). I believe it should be on TH-cam. It’s a behind the scenes full length version of that video where tenant says some silly things that are referenced in show in season 10.
You mentioned about the actor who plays Tim being in GoT. He’s not the only one. Harry Lloyd, who plays Baines, is also in GoT as Viserys Targaryen, the one who got the “golden crown”.
Yeah, and the few other occasions on which Sentient Stars have been a thing in The Whoniverse (I won't go into any more detail because spoilers), they've tended to be psychic beings, so I always took it to be less of a physical infection and more of a possession type thing.
This story was filmed in South Wales in St Fagans. Its actually basically a museum of wales. Fun fact: the dance hall at the end of this episode is actually on the second floor of the building. Knowing that made the scarecrow jumping at Tim through the window made it even creepier
In the Doctor Who universe all humans are slightly psychic. Some have enough to use it, like Tim is. Most don't. The servant girl in Season 1's Charles Dickens episode was also an example. That's how she could tell where the ghosts where, do a real science and about knowinng about Rose's dad/seeing the future.
Fun fact: This episode and its second part is actually an adaptation of a novel from the 90s starring the Seventh Doctor (who's played by Sylvester McCoy, who was also Radagast the Brown in the Hobbit movies). Russell T. Davis liked it so much that he brought the author of the book, Paul Cornell, on board to adapt it into this two-parter.
For me this two parter and the following unrelated episode are the absolute peak of the 10th Doctor era. Great, brilliantly written stories featuring fascinating concepts and characters with superb acting throughout by all concerned and packing a real emotional punch. I won't say any more until after the next episode reaction.
I have never thought of this episode as a “Doctor Lite” episode! Fascinating way of thinking about it. This episode is always considered one of the highlights of this era of the show. Another example of Martha going through the wringer for no damn reason.
This is a humdinger of a pair of episodes! Watching David Tennant playing two different characters in the one show is incredible! And Harry Lloyd is really great in this - another example of Doctor Who grabbing someone just before they became famous! Those wood carvings of The Doctor and Rose are amazing by the way!
Respect for whoever stuck the Spaced DVD cover into the edit there. Absolutely seminal bit of work, and vastly under appreciated on TH-cam, despite it being the start of collab between Pegg, Frost, Wright and Park. Also, you're not wrong about this being a lovely story - it's based on a DW Novel written a decade or so earlier by friends in the fandom, and it was one of the best novels in the series when it was written too. This adaptation does it justice.
oh boy here we go... from here to the end of the season is absolutely golden, youll really like the rest of it :) edit: i simply must reiterate how incredible the rest of the season from this point on is, some of the best thats ever come out of doctor who!
If you've seen the Maze Runner movies, you would also recognize Thomas Sangster from those, alongside fellow Brit Will Poulter, aka Adam Warlock from GotG 3.
My understanding (this may all be head cannon, formed after watching the episode the first time) of the events from "42" were that the life force in the sun was a swarm of creatures, and the ship's ram scoop collected some of them when they scooped the sun for fuel. I believe the captain's husband was working on the ram scoop's system and that was where/when the transfer occurred.
Your dog definitely was on alert, because my dog went to the window and started barking too! She just doesn’t comprehend streaming doorbells and barking.
This two-parter is up among my all-time favorite Doctor Who episodes. Aside from the writing being really good, it also gives all the actors so much room to really show their skills.
Harry Lloyd also played a young Charles Xavier in the last season of FX's Legion. Such a trippy show, it's very much inspired by psychedelic rock and plays out like a nightmare acid trip meets music video meets X-Men (based on Xavier's son David Haller, known as Legion, an omega-level mutant with a severe case of schizophrenia).
The writer of this two-parter, Paul Cornell, also wrote “Father’s Day” for Series 1 (where Rose tries to save her father’s life and messes up the timeline).
I love that we have the video of the doctor giving the list of instructions without being fast forwarded, which led to the brilliance of David Tennant saying "Bingle bongle dingle dangle yickety doo yickety dah ping pong lippy tappy too tah"
Thought of you the other day when I was watching an episode of the first doctor's adventures The Doctor had just been introduced as Doctor Caligari Stranger "Doctor Who?" Doctor: "Ahem, quite right"
This is possibly my favourite story of New Who. One of the best enemies, brilliant characterisation and, come the next episode, a deep, powerful denouement.
this two-parter has magnificent writing and acting, not only in its portrayal of pre-WW1 England, but giving David a chance to flex his chops as a much more human character and Harry Lloyd being the creepiest creeper to ever creep.
So... just a fun fact that really relates to me more than anything. After the original series and before this "new" series, there was an attempt to revive Doctor Who in America. They made a pilot movie starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor. The film even started with the 7th Doctor and had him "die" to regenerate into 8. While the movie was not fantastic, Paul McGann was incredible as the Doctor. A portion of the fandom REFUSED to acknowledge him as being an official Doctor and that just made me a bigger fan of McGann. Paul McGann did continue on as The Doctor in audio form (as did other Doctor actors), but the "New" Doctor Who show had not done much to talk much about the old show (aside from the return of some class Doctor Who villains). THIS EPISODE was the first episode to show images of the Doctors from the old series and what made me giddy with delight was the center and largest image in The Doctor's book of memories was an image of Paul McGann... cementing him even further as officially being part of the Doctor Who legacy. Anyway... that's one additional reason why this episode means a lot to me!
This is an example of some of the best episodes of NuWho. And note; so far as producing it, it's remarkably simplistic, carried by good costumes and fantastic acting. It's like classic Doctor Who in that sense.
Oh Family of Blood two parter reaction? Instant like. This has always been one of my absolute favorites. And you have a run of some of my favorites coming up. Enjoy!
The creepy music accompanying the little girl is a call back to the music used with a different little girl in the classic Who story Remembrance of the Daleks from 1988.

Guest appearance by Jon Pertwee! "Hang a mo, Aunt Sally, while I put on me murderin' head!"
When she said "Scariest Scarecrow" my brain when to Worzel too. LOL
I need the next reaction nowwwww
@@ruudiluca me too…. HURRY UP XANDER
@funnylilgalreacts i would suggest never looking at these comments. There are multiple season story arcs. Though the dr who people seem better than the battlestar ones
@@funnylilgalreacts XANDEEEEEERRRRRRR
It's sort of a miracle that the kid didn't get his brains scrambled. He's like 10 years old and just started absorbing over 900 years of knowledge.
It's a classic children's song, sung in playgrounds up and down the country. I dunno if Murray Gold deliberately used the same tune as in Remembrance, or just instinctively knew which tune goes best with "creepy schoolgirl". =:o}
@@therealpbristowFive six, seven eight, it's a doctor at the gate.
Oh my gosh let's goo we're in the Goated run now
So during the part that Martha fast forwarded though they had David say a bunch of lines.
I think the scarecrows might have been a nod to the old ITV kids show
Worzel Gummidge, the title character (an animate sentient scarecrow)
played by Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor.
The Chameleon Arch was malfunctioning during the Pertwee era. Turned the Doctor into a scarecrow, and Sarah Jane Smith into Aunt Sally.

And Tim as Jojen Reed
"I'm talking to a machine." "I'd do it." She says, talking to a machine, the camera.
I have been waiting patiently for this reaction ever since you said you were going to be reacting to Doctor Who.
The day has finally arrived!
In the last episode, we did see that the doctor looking directly at the sun was enough for him to be affected
Most importantly, Thomas Brodie-Sangster is the "voice" of Ferb.
You dog senses that the UPS person is working with scarecrows. ;)
I read this just as she was talking about it.
The young boy also voices Ferb in Phineas and Ferb
Oh the next episode. OH THE NEXT EPISODE. Ending gives me chills to this day.
Ohhhh this is one of my all time favorite Doctor Who stories, I forgot it was coming up!! I wish we could get more stories like this one

This actually isn’t the doctor lite episode of the season, you’ve still got that one to come and it is one of the best, if not the best of all time!
For me this two parter and the following unrelated episode are the absolute peak of the 10th Doctor era. Great, brilliantly written stories featuring fascinating concepts and characters with superb acting throughout by all concerned and packing a real emotional punch. I won't say any more until after the next episode reaction.
Amazing double episode. Really shows David's range
Baines' actor is also Victor in Arcane and was Viserys in Game of Thrones, was superb in The Theory of Everything.
This story is possibly my favourite 10th Doctor story, so good!
Hands down the best story in series 3, not counting the finale arc.
oh boy here we go... from here to the end of the season is absolutely golden, youll really like the rest of it :)
edit: i simply must reiterate how incredible the rest of the season from this point on is, some of the best thats ever come out of doctor who!
If you've seen the Maze Runner movies, you would also recognize Thomas Sangster from those, alongside fellow Brit Will Poulter, aka Adam Warlock from GotG 3.
Everyone should recognise Will Poulter from Son of Rambow. Such as good movie
"Where are we... this woodwork is amazing BUT WHERE ARE WE". LOLOLOLOLOL! God I love your commentaries!
These two episodes are my favourite ever. Love them to bits
Such an amazing two-parter! Also, your dog is adorable! ❤🐺
That's one of the many things I love about Doctor Who. They work with great actors even if it's a small bit or a 1 or 2 episode thing.
Harry Lloyd also plays a young charles Xavier in the excellent show Legion, a psychedelic trip that blew me away!
You are so lucky getting to see this for 1st time, the next few episodes are all peak doctor who
I love that we have the video of the doctor giving the list of instructions without being fast forwarded, which led to the brilliance of David Tennant saying "Bingle bongle dingle dangle yickety doo yickety dah ping pong lippy tappy too tah"
Favorite episodes of this season. The Family is an awesome concept for a villainous species. And those scarecrows! Cheers....
Love this arc. Really gets into the depth of the show and what makes it special.
Thought of you the other day when I was watching an episode of the first doctor's adventures The Doctor had just been introduced as Doctor Caligari
Stranger "Doctor Who?"
Doctor: "Ahem, quite right"
32:11 - Angela's real mafia roots are showinggg. Don't play with her!! 😂😂
The 5th Doctor is David Tennant’s father-in-law. Which feels like David was destined to play the Doctor.
This episode and the next episode are two of my favorite David Tennant episodes. These villains are awesome.
So... just a fun fact that really relates to me more than anything.
YES! I know it's a two parter but these two together I think is my favorite episode in the whole series. It's just so well done, I love it
This is one of my favourite Tenant episodes, good acting , great story well written. I'm sure you will love the ending .
“Ferb, I know what we’re gonna do today!”
This is probably my favourite 2 parter in tennants era and also love baines actor he did an amazing job
Oh Family of Blood two parter reaction? Instant like.
This has always been one of my absolute favorites. And you have a run of some of my favorites coming up. Enjoy!
This two-parter is absolutely in my who top 10. Love it! Thx ever so much for sharing your experience of it! 👏
Paul McGann (8th Doctor) and Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor) are shown in the book.
The creepy music accompanying the little girl is a call back to the music used with a different little girl in the classic Who story Remembrance of the Daleks from 1988.
The ball that the Doctor throws to save the mother and the baby from harm is a cricket ball which is a Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) callback.
I hope the doggy's OK.
