  • On fine day near downtown Anchorage, a woman came across an SD card on the sidewalk. Reviewing it, it was labelled "Homicide at Midtown Marriott". That is exactly what it was. Following the trial, this would lead the police to South African Brian Smith, possible serial killer, and definite chameleon.

Her brother borrowed $20 and then became unreachable by phone. She raged on and on about that $20 and went by his house at least on 2 occasions. She finally "caught" him and then proudly announced that she got her $20 back. I cut off association with her 5 years ago, she use to be a fun person...

At first I thought it was a cover story he made up, so that if the ad card was found it could be returned to him easily without snooping. But that doesn't account for "HOMICIDE" being written on it. Unless before the woman, someone else found it and was horrified and labeled it and threw it away? -- I think Mike probably has the right idea. The thieves didn't want to incriminate themselves, but wanted it found and turned into police. It's not like someone's going to find that and keep it for their personal collection. The chances of it alarming someone and being turned into cops was very very high.....

I lived up in far northern Saskatchewan about 27 years ago now and bc I didn't drive at that time, I'd get rides down to the city with various people (usually friends, but... not always). The 'not friend' I came down with one Christmas stopped to pick up a couple of teenagers and told me that it was basically an unspoken code that at that time of year, if someone is hitching, you stop and pick 'em up, bc you never know if anyone else will be coming along. And if it comes out that you didn't stop and sth happened, well...
It stuck by me all this time later, tho I've never actually been back up there since I left my job there a couple of months later. (and then moved to Europe, where I've been ever since until last year.)

    • @kme
      @kme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@Caryn Gibson I've had to hitchhike - was with my bf of the time; his jeep had broken down while we were off-roading in the Kananaskis (Alberta) but someone was nice enough to stop when many more didn't. He did admit if I hadn't been there, he wouldn't have stopped at all. But this was about 3-4 years before I moved up north and I guess when people were still a little more trusting. But even then, we always heard stories and worried about that kind of thing. When I was working in Banff, I was told do not stop for anyone, no matter who it is. You could always call the police to get them when you're back home... but I never saw anyone on any of my trips home. 🤷 I was very lucky.

I grew up in Southeast Alaska in the 70’s and we hitchhiked all the time with our parents permission. However, our town was very small, most people all knew each other, and the only way out of the place was by boat or plane. 50 years later, the population is pretty much the same, but I don’t think I’d take a chance hitchhiking nowadays.

    My theory:
    1) Thief broke into his car.
    2) Thief checked the goods. Noticed the SD card was full of murder content.
    3) Thief wrote Murder at Midtown Marriott on it.
    4) Thief wanted no trial to lead back to him so he could still be a thief, but also wanted the murderer caught, so he left it where people might see it.
    5) Woman found SD card, checked it, called the police.
    6) Murderer wanted to get his SD card back and so called the police. If he were a victim they would not check the contents of his valuables, giving him a way to obtain his content safely.
    7) Police connected the dots based on his accent and he was mega screwed.

Under normal circumstances, I would completely agree, but I feel like there are a couple things to consider.
The person that found the SD card also knew what hotel it was filmed in based on the carpet pattern. Strange of a coincidence as it seems, it happens.
Also, Anchorage is the biggest city here, but it only has barely 300,000 ppl. It's not huge and there isn't a wide array of budget-friendly lodging options compared to the Continental U.S.
What we got is what we got, we can't drive anywhere better if we felt so inclined. In fact, Anchorage is the 'better' that ppl drive to, if possible. It is not possible for me and it sucks lol I have been there a few times, but I digress.
So the chances of locals overlapping stays with other locals in hotels is believable to me. As well as having to stay at the same places repeatedly for lack of options.

I think they regret confessing after realizing they’re not just going to get a warning and be let go. Sitting in jail and realizing they’re going to be tried for a serious crime, they start thinking they can claim they were coerced or tricked into confessing to crimes they didn’t commit. Cops definitely have and do use psychological tactics to get people to confess to crimes they didn’t commit, but I’ve rarely seen it done with a serial killer which this guy most certainly is. He said unless they were true psychopaths (and he’s met a few), they wanted to get caught - consciously or subconsciously. They felt guilty about their crimes. They want it off their chest. It was basic human nature. And often what others perceive as stupid mistakes is that subconscious desire to get caught.
Getting them to talk was just a matter of finding the avenue that allowed them to psychologically cope with a confession - not much different than a friend, a shrink, or a priest.

Thanks for making today more tolerable than usual. It’s freezing out, the news is a shit show, and I have bronchitis. It’s a rough one and you’re helping the day go by quicker.
