One of the most beautiful and genius piece by Liszt.

Answer to the question at 1:12
It was Marc-André Hamelin's recital in Tokyo, Japan, on Dec. 11, 1997. The whole series of Hamelin's first Japan recital in 1997 has been considered as one of the most legendary performances by him. I really wish I could attend the recital live, but I was born about three years later...

Liszt set the stage for the solo piano concert as we know it. He was one of the most famous musicians in the world, and arguably the greatest pianist of all time. If you listen to him. You're in good company

Hamelin playing the Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 in the same concert is my favorite performance of the piece

Really interesting to hear two pianists back to back like this. I really love this piece and find it interesting how different it sounds in these two clips. For me, it's going to be incredibly hard to beat that smooth, soft touch by Hamelin. He is one of the world's top pianists, famed for his ability to play incredibly fast and difficult pieces with all the musicality and intonation and colour in the piece. I really strongly recommend listening to any of his performances of Alkan's music. It's really next level stuff, arguably even more difficult than Liszt, at least from the point of sheer speed and number of notes to play.

If you like Hamelin’s interpretation, I highly recommend Claudio Arrau’s recording. That man knew how to play Liszt.

Hamelin is a fantastic pianist and one highly intelligent musician as well! His technical prowess is on another level, and you'd definitely not be disappointed by any of his performances ((:

Omg, grand piano and digital piano are so different... BTW, this piece shows the concept of the "third hand". Seemingly you just play arpeggios in both hands but the main voice is hidden somewhere in the middle. Liszt is one of the first composers who started to use it regularly in his pieces.

One thing that these versions both have in common is the very ending. These both end with a descending whole-tone scale in the left hand (11:36). Personally, I'm more of a a fan of the original ending, but this one is good, too. Paul Barton's video on "Version 3" also demonstrates 4 beautiful extra bars after the second cadenza (right before the bit at 3:42) that Liszt added in later performances of this piece.

un suspiro is a very magical piece. Liszt was a genius. The technique is so esthetic thooo..
One of the most "Tetris" thing you will get of visualization on TH-cam is the 12. and last transcendental etude of the franz liszt etude set you already reacted to. "Chasse Neige" (snow storm) - The great musician and youtube piano visualizer "See Music" uploaded such a "tetris" piano piece. Its seems so messy cause lizszt wrote sooo many notes to create snow and wind effects on that piece. You saw trifonov playing it but you shoud definitely react to the visualized one, its amazing :)

Another great reaction! I know you'll probably be reacting to the rest of Chopin's Nocturnes at some point, so for the Nocturne in C Minor Op. 48 No. 1, I recommend Seong-Jin Cho's very popular Chopin Competition performance video.

I suggest you to listen to the slower version played by Paul Barton. You will definitely be amazed. Also, the 1st Liebestraum is so awesome as well. Other nice pieces: Jeux d'eau a la villa d'Este played by Arrau, Impromptu Nocturne (a relatively unknown piece, but so beautiful) and Apparition no.1, a very "atmospheric" piece
