Yeah, I bought my own helmet also, for riding with my gf… Chiang mai always has random checkpoints within the city. I had my permit too (expired now) but just always had her drive. They were looking for every excuse to issue a citation. They stop every motorbike.
I hear it's rough up there on that front. There's some foreigners in Khon Kaen but not enough to ride around without a helmet like some do in Pattaya. I have a motorcycle license at home so I'm totally legal here with my IDP but still don't want to give the boys in brown any of my baht. Lol

They look for 1. Bike registration sticker 2. Helmet 3.license.
btw if the reason is for paying the police money rather than safety then only the rider needs to be wearing a helmet. cheers.
