Sea Beasts did well financially and critically, but it still feels kinda underrated. In my opinion, that world is so well realized, imaginative, and beautiful, watching it gave me the same feeling I had watching How to Train Your Dragon. Great fucking movie.
If I’m being honest, that’s how I felt when watching it too. Except the first HTTYD movie worked, because there really wasn’t that much of a villain to be begin with. With the Sea Beast, I feel like them, needing to add a villain into the movie felt very hacked on, as we never even see what caused such motivations to begin with.
Eh, the young girl character was difficult for me to root for because of her personality... I remember not buying her moral voice of reason speech near the end of the movie that the director tried to shoehorn in because she had been such an immature rude annoyance throughout the whole rest of the film, so it felt super out of character and unrealistic for me. As for the rest of the film I thought it was...meh. Not as revolutionary and as interesting as id have liked it to be. It didn't feel as climactic as it wanted to be. But I agree with others in saying its miles better than wish.
One thing I love about The Sea Beast is that Red is allowed to remain wild. Like, movies and shows such as How To Train Your Dragon, or The Croods, or Pokemon all have the theme of "these giant creatures aren't evil monsters, they're just misunderstood and peaceful beings!" But then...they make pets and companions of them and show all species as able to be domesticated and tamed, and it's honestly kind of weird how pop culture sees the opposite of "destructive evil monster" as "tamable trainable pet material" with very little middle ground? I like the vibe Red gave in this movie. She's not a murderous monster, just an innocent animal living her life, but at the same time, she is not a pet, or even a friend. She is a wild creature who at most tolerates the protagonists, who have no control over her when she decides to retaliate against a percieved threat. And at the end she doesn't become a loyal companion like Toothless does, but rather returns to the wild with no further contact: an untamable, free creature best appreciated from a respectful distance as all wild animals should be.
You mean "Godzilla?" When Godzilla got over his "metaphor for nuclear bombs" era, he became "destructive force of nature you can only weather & pray it destroys the greater of 2 evils."
Yeah but in the 3rd dragon movie, it kind of proves that they weren't in fact all meant to be trained. Toothless wanted his own life and family, and hiccup had to realize it, and let him be the wild animal he was.
Is it weird that I tought of Life of Pi when I read this? Because that's exactly the point that comes across at the end when the tiger walks away from Pi, god I love that movie

I love the Sea Beast. Truly a hidden gem. The animation is beautiful, the characters are likable and well-written, the music, the use of color-theory, the narrative, chef’s kiss. Beautiful.
The Sea Beast was truly a fantastic animated and a bit of an underrated gem on Netflix. Still deserves more recognition despite being a bit similar to How to Train your Dragon. ⛵️🐍
I absolutely LOVED Sea Beasts when I first watched it and it's now a movie I like to have in the background because 1) I know the plot so I don't have to focus my brain too much on it, and 2) it's that good of a movie to rewatch and have going in the background for me. One of the other details in terms of Crow losing everything is that he also lost his ship too; Red fell on top of and crushed it when she was trying to get back up, so not only did he lose his crew and his adoptive son, he also lost the ship that he had for years. There's also the interesting bit that when Red grabbed Maisie during the scuffle she knew how gentle she needed to be without crushing Maisie's foot, because lets face it, Red could've easily done that if this was her first time interacting with people in a more positive way. It makes you wonder if she had a positive interaction with another person before, or else how would she know what's the right amount of force to not hurt Maisie?
I’m surprised you haven’t seen this hidden gem. I really enjoyed this movie giving how to train your dragon vibes. But it did set itself apart that makes it feel it own thing
I think the disconnect with the witch scene is that people don't see him losing everything as a consequence of going to the witch. Like yes he did lose everything but considering the direction of the story, I think they're assuming that it would've happened regardless (and assuming that him and his son/crew would be able to make peace and he could retire with what limbs he has left).
Sea Beast is such a great film! I really appreciate how "mature" and intense it's allowed to be. Like, you literally have a grown man threatening to shoot a child with a gun! And then later that child nearly gets blown up by a canon and she starts bleeding out! This movie is wild, but it's very underrated
To be honest, I didn't like the movie, but it HAD potential. I think it was missing something, and it was going way too fast in the pacing. I think that it would have been better as a series, because not only would we have seen more positive interactions with different beasts, but also thicken the overall plot and ending. Also, it would have permitted the people to be more empathic to the characters and their development in the relationship. It would help the plot twist that, for me, was a bit out of nowhere (and the fact that the girl was able to convince everyone in about 15 minutes or so). So yeah, still better than wish tho...
Yeah the ending felt rushed, she really didn't explain why what they said were lies, she just kinda proclaims that they're liars and everyone agrees. I wouldn't say the plot twist was out of nowhere, it was alluded to when they were riding Red.
I enjoyed the movie a lot, but still agree that this movie, overall, would have functioned better if it either a longer movie, or a series. The potential is definitely there, but certain elements could have been explored more thoroughly or expressed with more sentiment, had the story had more time to do so.
Not to mention, it really had the whole cliché similar to avatar where it’s “Humans=bad, nature=good.”. At least with Princess Mononoke and the Planet of the Apes reboot series, they were able to make their messages without making anyone a straight up villain. But also, I do agree that they should’ve cut Masie’s character out, and let the focus be on Jacob, as he is more of the active character from the story. It also makes more sense, for Jacob to save Crow from the Red Bluster, since the two have more of a relationship than Maisie and Crow.
The only problem with sea beast imo is the middle of the plot and it ties in the movie- where the witch came in. THERE WAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL and the animation of the moving tattoos were awesome.
I agree with everything you said I love how people rarely pay attention to the meaning like to most people When the witch said that Thrre like *He lost nothing* Nuh uh he lost it all His Sanity,His Thinking and Jacob (IK Jacob's Not dead) And It's realistic that the Sea Best's Have basic designs sureee there big giant Beast's But are still animals (Also Red's a girl Ik you Prob don't care XD)

And u do it in a very entertaining way by using movies and an energetic/engaging personality that it lets me enjoy my spare time without making me feel like I’m half studying. TLDR: Love the vids, keep it up❤
3:53 I actually felt like Red’s design was smart, as it pulled on actual natural designs of large ocean animals (whales, etc). Especially since the movie feels like it’s riffing on Moby Dick, so the Whale motif works
I watched Sea Beast one day on vacation at Long Beach, Washington and late at night, I was watching some Netflix. I passed by this movie while checking out my options and from the surface I thought the movie would either be a fun, but lackluster movie, or a complete clone of Httyd with zero heart. But after watching the whole thing, both of those opinions were devalued completely. I lost those opinions in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The art, the characters, the story, all way better than I honestly thought they would be. It was a genuinely amazing movie, and I'm glad I came past it. Also from recent reports, I heard it's getting a sequel. So I am extremely excited to see that.
I have a movie recommendation for you, it’s not animated, but it is dark. And British! It’s called Threads, and it’s a movie about Nuclear Warfare and surviving it. It is absolutely terrifying, and it’s very dark and grim. I think it’s right up your alley.
I've never even heard of this movie, but I absolutely love the message. It's something that should resonate with everyone. Definitely going to try to see it.
I remember stumbling upon this movie on Netflix last year. I watched it, expecting something pretty mediocre or even outright bad, and was pleasantly surprised. I was bummed that no one really talked about it, so I’m glad you did
Honestly I found the theme of ‘living a great life and dying a great death’ really interesting (considering it’s a freaking kid’s movie). Nowhere in HTTYD you’ll see a deconstruction of the cult of the hero and glorification of sacrifice.
I really did like this movie, very well done movie. My only real complaint is that the ending kind of came out of nowhere, and I feel like it could have had better build up for it. We didn't need the witch part in the movie, it was really weird. It would have been more interesting if Crow had pretended to sympathize with Maisie about the beasts and take advantage of her bond with red, so that he could lure red into a trap. Only at the end would he self reflect and realize his wrong doings. Idk I'm not sure what would have made the ending better, but it just kind of fell flat compared to the rest of the movie
I really wanted to like this movie more but too much of it felt like rehashed scenes of Treasure Planet and HTTYD for me to properly get invested, particularly so towards the end. The beginning however is absolutely phenomenal and feels the most well developed (I wish Red had more design motifs taken from historical monsters like the Brickleback got to, though the scene of her descending was perfect)
I watched this movie last year with my boyfriend and we genuinely loved it! It slows down a bit much in the last parts but overall one of the best animated movies in recent time! ✨
If you like pirate shows/movies 'Black sails' is a Fantastic recommendation It's a TV Show and it's one of the most fleshed out Pirate world ever shown on TV
Good to see Sea Beast get some love! It’s a very underrated movie in my opinion with some cool character designs and a very important (I’ll be it on the nose) message. It’s a shame a lot of people dismissed it when it first came out as a HTTYD ripoff.
Your video made me rewatch The Sea Beast, and it's just SUCH a good film! It takes so many risks that Disney (and other studios, for that matter) are just too scared to take.
I agree the problem is that when it comes to other studios like Disney and illumination entertainment is that are afraid to take risks with their movies like how often do you see those studios make a PG-13 anime the movie The answer is zero
I recently watched this kovie and really lived it, and was sad it wasn't being talked about more. I think the best thing about the story is that it completely went against my expectations, I even cried a bit at the end. I felt for all the major characters, and by the end I cried. Again, really sad to see such gems of animation not properly advertised, they could be such classics. Lost Ollie is a perfect example of the same thing (a miniseries, a little dark for kids but it had me sobbing by the end, really gorgeous show.)
Only critic I got of this movie is the red queen or what's her face looks too.. plushie like? She's way too smooth and round and whatnot for it to really sell the whole her being the biggest threat out there plus next to all the other monsters she sticks out due to the smoothness and roundness The other monsters are very.. well monster looking Yeah she's absolutely massive but I'd have loved if they made her sharper, more scarred and just overall more cool and less cutesy
I don't hate Modern Disney (if we're talking about the entire period after Walt's death) and the recent movies that got released... but I'm aware that under the current management they're losing focus on the quality. But I have a reason to be optimistic: ever since the death of Walt in 1966, Disney has always faced troubled times and managed to get back on top thanks to management changes and people who were truly passionate about their work and wanted to make the best of it. I'm willing to say that Disney needs to learn to evolve and take lessons from the competition if they still want to be part of the race. And I think they can do it... but at the end of the day, the bosses are difficult to convince, but it's not impossible if enough pressure is made.
I honestly didn't enjoy the movie. It's just a clone of HTTYD. Edit: Yes, I did watch the movie. I began to feel like I had seen it before when I realized all the similarities between it and HTTYD. Also, the animation and designs weren't all too special. It's not a bad movie by any means, just boring. It felt like a copy of other movies I've seen.
I absolutely love this movie. I first watched it while I was on bed rest after surgery, it was so beautiful. The animation, the story, and especially the characters, like I cried at the end lol
That fact that a history tuber actually did a video on how many things this film actually got right when it came to the time period it's based despite being complete fiction.

I love the Sea Beast. Truly a hidden gem. The animation is beautiful, the characters are likable and well-written, the music, the use of color-theory, the narrative, chef’s kiss. Beautiful.
They’re not “fantasy pirates” they’re whalers, the movie is about whaling.
The Sea Beast was truly a fantastic animated and a bit of an underrated gem on Netflix. Still deserves more recognition despite being a bit similar to How to Train your Dragon. ⛵️🐍
Red: **throws crab**
Crab: LOOKS LIKE TEAM ROCKET IS BLASTING OFF AGAINNNNN
I don't even have thalassophobia, but that "thalassophobia moment" really freaked me out.
as someone with thalassophobia, i can confirm that was terrifying and I looked away bc just the thought of it, is enough to scare me
I’m surprised you haven’t seen this hidden gem. I really enjoyed this movie giving how to train your dragon vibes. But it did set itself apart that makes it feel it own thing
I'M GLAD YOU SHOWED THE TERRIFYING OCEAN PART. WHEN SHE SINKS INTO THE OCEAN??? COLD SWEATS
I love the animation style of this. Reminds me of a Sea of Thieves trailer
Sea beasta haunts my thalassophobia but it is so good and real feeling I can't stop rewatching it
Sea Beast is such a great film!
I really appreciate how "mature" and intense it's allowed to be. Like, you literally have a grown man threatening to shoot a child with a gun! And then later that child nearly gets blown up by a canon and she starts bleeding out! This movie is wild, but it's very underrated
So glad your finally talking about this movie!!! I loved it so much watching it with my sister's last year :)
I really like the digital camera work in the clips of the movie. Definitely going to go watch it now.
I do indeed love talking about disneys downfall
It's depressing
maybe 2d animation would save them
To be honest, I didn't like the movie, but it HAD potential.
The movie feels aimed at 11yr olds, and if it had aimed at 13yr olds, it would have been a better movie.
I agree with everything you said I love how people rarely pay attention to the meaning like to most people When the witch said that Thrre like *He lost nothing* Nuh uh he lost it all His Sanity,His Thinking and Jacob (IK Jacob's Not dead) And It's realistic that the Sea Best's Have basic designs sureee there big giant Beast's But are still animals
(Also Red's a girl Ik you Prob don't care XD)
I don’t read much philosophy, probs bc 90% of my generation don’t touch books. But ur vids open up so many perspectives that are normally hidden or turned around by media, propaganda, beliefs or social constructs ect. And u do it in a very entertaining way by using movies and an energetic/engaging personality that it lets me enjoy my spare time without making me feel like I’m half studying.
TLDR: Love the vids, keep it up❤
Sorry for the lingo, I type like I text, it’s a utube comment, let it go.
I was not expecting you to drop a video on this amazing movie, but I’m happy you did. I love The Sea Beast.
3:53 I actually felt like Red’s design was smart, as it pulled on actual natural designs of large ocean animals (whales, etc). Especially since the movie feels like it’s riffing on Moby Dick, so the Whale motif works
it looks like a lizard dude. how is that a ocean animal?
Finally someone mentions about this movie! Because The Sea Beast is actually a really good movie
Streaming doesn't seem to have the same restrictions which is so nice to see! Happy holidays!
I'm SO GLAD you talked about this movie. It pleasantly surprised me and quickly became one of my favorites.
Captain Crow reminds me of part of the famous saying. "Careful you wrestle with monsters lest you yourself become one." Or something like that. Iykyk
I was bummed that no one really talked about it, so I’m glad you did
Crow was the coolest character in my opinion, that scene with the witch felt like something from Shakespeare.
5:57 "...and the soon to be captain 𝖏𝖆𝖈𝖔𝖇 𝖍𝖔𝖑𝖑𝖆𝖓𝖉"
Also the joke, before the eggs hatched. that had me on the floor.
Honestly I found the theme of ‘living a great life and dying a great death’ really interesting (considering it’s a freaking kid’s movie). Nowhere in HTTYD you’ll see a deconstruction of the cult of the hero and glorification of sacrifice.
PLEASE review Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas! Not only are the center of the movie about pirates, its also 2d animated and severly underrated
My favorite part of this video are the 3 and a half minute of intro followed by 2 of sponsorship
You know at first glance at the thumbnail I thought that the red monster was a middle finger for a moment. 😅
Ever see that Netflix “Pluto”? It’s astroboy as seen as a murder mystery
I loved this movie on Netflix! I watched it to see if the hype around it was worthy of it at the time.
I watched this movie last year with my boyfriend and we genuinely loved it! It slows down a bit much in the last parts but overall one of the best animated movies in recent time! ✨
i honestly adore sea beast. ive watched it like 10 times and its become my comfort movie. 10/10, better than the past 5 disney movies
If you like pirate shows/movies
'Black sails' is a Fantastic recommendation
It's a TV Show and it's one of the most fleshed out Pirate world ever shown on TV
Good to see Sea Beast get some love! It’s a very underrated movie in my opinion with some cool character designs and a very important (I’ll be it on the nose) message. It’s a shame a lot of people dismissed it when it first came out as a HTTYD ripoff.
oh i'd loooooove to see a video full of recommendations from you! especially animations!
I have heard nothing about Sea beasts. First time I heard about it.
I found Crow really similiar to Dutch Van Der Linde from the Red Dead Redemption franchise
That SM64 sound bite made me laugh far harder than it should have lmao. 10/10 vid
That ending made me double check if I was subscribed even though know I am bc I got a notification for this video.
She's way too smooth and round and whatnot for it to really sell the whole her being the biggest threat out there plus next to all the other monsters she sticks out due to the smoothness and roundness
The other monsters are very.. well monster looking
Yeah she's absolutely massive but I'd have loved if they made her sharper, more scarred and just overall more cool and less cutesy
You should really do a video on Pirates! Band of Misfits
Freaking loved Sea Beast!
What a good movie about quest, duty, love and responsibility
Does your outro song have name/artist? Really love the vibe but Shazam is drawing blanks when I try to find it.
Man, I know everyone has done it, but I'm curious what you think of Godzilla Minus One
Man I love sea beast-the animation and message was beautiful
What streaming service is it on?
Encanti
Netflix @@1BiChristianF
Netflix my guy 👍@@1BiChristianF
I love that Sea Shanty 2 from OSRS plays on repeat in the background
FINALLY someone talks about this movie… criminally unknown and wonderfully done. I want to do a video of it so,time myself agh
Sea Beast is such a good movie
Can you please make a vid on Blue Eye Samurai?
More people need to watch it.
The Sea Beast felt half-baked with its themes but I'd rewatch it over WISH
Nice to see someone else notice this pleasant surprise of a movie
Im a sucker for animated movies, and its so good!
I remember when this channel was about magic tutorials 😂
0:40 does anyone know what the name of the show is of the one with the big wheel of symbols with the lady on it is called?
Omg the human designs are so good as well??
Encanto is proof that the at least the Animation Studio will be fine
I think it would be interesting to see your take on the Avatar movies
when the movie came out i loved it, but every reviewer seemed to dog on it calling plan and boring and a rip off of how to train your dragon.
Red's concept art is super cool, don't know why they didn't keep that design
I really liked the movie up till the end- I felt the ending fell absolutely flat.
out of all Netflix animated movies, Klaus might be my favorite. Apart from that and Sea Beast, Nimona is pretty good too.
I loved this film. It actually felt amazing to watch. As opposed to the last 6 years of disney
My kid really wanted us to watch this and I wasnt disappointed
Every fantastic youtube editor is also a Jojos fan apparently
For some reason when he said "my dogs are barking" I thought he was going to whip out his feet or something and start barking at the camera
"Let's be real here" I'm insane in the membrane.
Don't forget Claus!!
the animation technology The sea beast developed for its ropes is the same stuff they used for ATSV's webs ! !
That fact that a history tuber actually did a video on how many things this film actually got right when it came to the time period it's based despite being complete fiction.
Sea Beast was just a somewhat discount HtTYD, but it some how beat Disney's Wish.
