How do I stop my down pipes from getting clogged then?

KEEP IT SIMPLE, Best option would be to install the recommended gutter guard and monitor the system to determine what service is needed if any service is needed to keep the system flowing properly. tinyurl.com/RecommendedGutterGuard

I like 'em, Jimmy! I just wanted to let you know somebody out here cares. Also, somebody out here got your sense of humor here in the comments for your video. Seriously, thank you for all of your work making these videos. You are a great teacher to those of us new to home ownership who feel like we've been thrown to the wolves... I never thought twice about gutters until last week when my neighbor's basement began flooding with storm water due to water run-off from my roof pooling in the 3' space between our houses. This was due to my gutters being clogged, rusted through and improperly placed (by the previous owner, I must add), so once again I am getting a crash course in a DIY home repair or renovation project. Thank goodness for TH-cam and the people who post their how-to videos both good and bad - I believe that some of the best instruction is seeing how NOT to do it. You, however, have shown me the right way to do gutters, and you are obviously an expert in your field, which comes across in your ability to not only clearly explain things to us newbies, but also in your knowing what the IMPORTANT points and topics are and stressing these rather than giving either too little or too much information as is so often the case with TH-cam instructional videos. I will soon be sending you some pictures and questions for my project to service@everythinggutter.com and will await your comments and suggestions so that I know that I have the best shot at doing the job as close to "correct" as I can get given the fact that I had never really thought about gutters before last week. I will try to get those to you later today... Thanks in advance!

What about those wire gutter strainers that are much wider than the mesh ones you show in the video?

Never worth guarding a downspout the gutters will still need to be cleaned and more often when just the downspout outlet is guarded. You would be better off installing a gutter guard, that is the bast downspout strainer👍

@@Everythinggutter thanks for replying! Right now we have leaf traps, and the gutters the inside epdm type. The outlets are enlarged to 3 inches.

I thought you used those to prevent squirrels from climbing up the gutters. If not those then what should you use?

Probably good advice for broad leaf tree neighborhoods but I agree with tubastuff below - this is NOT for Pacific Northwest (Vancouver BC). Its cheaper to deal with plugged gutters at the eaves than allow coniferous debris to enter the downspout and worse the perimeter drainage. Typically costs $$$ to have have the underground pipes out to the storm rooted out or worse dug up and replaced which is what will happen if you let that stuff go down for years.

Way to cut yourself off. This should be a 5 minute video talking pro and con of what you’re suggesting we use and what you suggest we don’t use.

Noooo gutter guard is horrible. Look at videos about it. They all recommend not getting it.
