Exactly 💯%. I've been using this system many yrs.(iam older than you). It works great for concrete forms. If the concrete is level, the building is level. If the foundation is off, the building is off!!! Get it???
Ancient Egyptians had clear plastic/acrylic tubing? That's amazing how advanced they were. I wonder how they made clear plastic tubing way back then. You mean water levels are "fool" proof, not "full."
You don't need a tube for level with water over long distances possible to make a small trench and fill it with water and set your reference points in each ends /corners. They probably leveled up two boards and aimed them like a gunsight for a third board further away and put the level mark and run a string between.
This is very good to use if you forget to bring the Lazer . It's something that old builders would use in the past but younger ones don't know about! Good to pass on to the new generation. Very valuable.
What about just using a Mason cord/rope with a hangable water level. Id assume its a lot quicker. I mean it you need to go around corners you could just mark your reference level at the corner and apply tension at the corner and transfer to the point where youd like to mark your height. I assume the Water level the both of you used will be slightly more accurate but I think for the most projects a few mm's would not be all too tragic. I've never used this technique before, however it is fascinating to see how resourceful our ancestors were in an era before the introduction of modern amenities.

I've used this method for laying out ceiling grid. I didn't have a long enough piece of clear tubing so I used a garden hose with 1' pieces of clear tubing at both ends, held in place by clamps, and it worked great.
When using a thin tube like this, the water often doesn't level exactly. To avoid this, put a little dish washing liquid in the container and mix it up before putting it in the tube. You should see much more accurate results! Dishwashing soap reduces water surface tension and makes water "wetter"!
@@Davidlouis3 yes it does! I haven't experimented with reducing the quantity of soap to the bare minimum required, but even then, may still have bubbles. Water is cheapest, but I never thought of using Vodka or diesel fuel! Need something with very low viscosity.
Great video … a quick tip, put a couple of drops of liquid soap in the water before you fill the line the coefficient of friction will be lowered and the bubbles are easier to remove. The level is achieved quicker as well.🤠👍🔨
Well not that long ago, 1980’s when I started as an electrician this is all the contractors used for installing T-bar, drop ceiling grids. I’m sure it’s been around for decades and centuries. Laser Levels have mostly replaced this method, but it is still popular in many area’s.

Now measure up or down to finish height
it don't work. I tried it. the water sticks inside until you jar, bump it to make it move. used it to install dropped sealing, got all screwed up. mabby a little dish soap will make it slide around inside better.
This method is slower, but more accurate for the average man! Providing there is no bubbles inside? Level can be unlimited! A mile? Very accurate! 100 miles? Just as accurate!
I have heard of using windshield washer fluid. The blue is easy to see, plus you can use the winter formula if you are working in an area prone to freeze.
It does - the first few times - but then (depending on what you used to colour it with) it stains the inside of the tube and makes it very difficult to see the meniscus. Food colouring is a disaster....
The earth is a globe. I think you have concluded that the earth is flat, simply because you do not see how water would "find its level" while going around a sphere. You assume that if there were a way, you would see it, but you don't see it, so there is no way the earth is a globe. But the source of this contradiction is that you have not learned how both can be true: water finds it level AND the earth is a globe. There is a way, though. It takes a deep dive into math and physics to see the evidence clearly, or else a trip high into the atmosphere.

No need to sip water what so ever. Just elevate one side which is in the water and lower to other as much as possible till atmospheric pressure is enough to create free flow through the tube. Why drink water into it when physics is real?

@h2s142 Why shoudn't you add soap? It reduces surface tension. It isn't for ease of sight, which is why you were mentioning food coloring.

I've used water levels several times when building decks. So easy to use. But you've got to pay attention to what you're doing.

Doing this make sure outside temperature is not too high. Water can be expanded or formed bubbles in the tube.
