The Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition, hosted by the Mason Contractors Association of America, is a showcase of industry craftsmanship and a testament of both the speed and skill of our industry's workforce. Only those journeymen masons who have the skill, confidence and courage to face-off with the industry's best are invited to compete. This is a contest that also proves how important teamwork is in accomplishing a final product.
The competition pits journeyman masons, accompanied by their two favorite tenders, against one another in a show of both speed and craftsmanship. Each contestant's goal is to complete as much of a 30 foot long long wall as possible, using 8"x8"x16" CMU and the provided mortar in a twenty-minute heat. Contestants must have a high degree of workmanship using normal masonry practices and hand tools.
Visit www.fastesttrowel.com/ for additional information including registration, photos, rules, and more.

Dad was never the fastest trowel But 40 + years after he passed away His building and homes are still there
I remember 2 years in a row Canadian bricklayers had it bad...Long winter. 2 weeks of rain into a housing crash. Then a carpenter strike The final straw was Building inspector wanted a pay off But ended up shutting down the site on a bad scaffold
Dad packed up his camper van And took a job 250 miles north And worked out of the van for over a month
I'm 49 years old since i was a kid till now i wear the gray white And red socks out of respect of the hardships every dad has being a mason

We do alot of repair on chimneys, tear out block walls and lay block for doors, windows etc. Grinding joints and regrouting plus brick replacement. I've seen and done it all. Doing repairs pays better than brand new construction as far as business goes imo.

As a black brick layer from Ky 3rd generation. I could win something like this. Im pretty good with my trowel. Block and brick. I worked in northern Cali for 15 years with mexicans and whites, they all told me I was the best they have seen as far as building corners and laying to the line. @@anthonycase9743 Hello friend actually I am also an immigrant to EU from Russia. My reflection is the same. However you miss one most important point - In reach countries there are no less oligarchs who wish to pay workers so much as their "third countries" conterparts, but !!! there are trade unions which protect labor, there are public instruments to protect a week (women, poor etc.) from strong ( powerful, reach, etc) The less these instruments are in a society the less protected you are. You run to USA by the same reasons that we run to EU, because in our countries your labor does not give you protection and security because your employers pay you less than they should. For a Mexican it is easier to go to USA and to work for the rate below those that generation of american unionists fought for. Sometimes they died for their struggle. Mexicans and other third world people do not want to struggle for their rights to be paid for their labor. I am an opposition member and factually political asylum seeker because I spent 20 years in these struggle in Russia. Unfortunately my countrymen do not understand why they have to struggle. The same is in Mexico. It is not good subject for you to be proud of that costly restaurants. In a good country a hard working man can afford to visit all restaurants may be not so often as elite but not so seldom in Mexico. I do not support this wall but how can americans convince people of Mexico start cleaning the mess in their own state even if some of them can suffer from it ? Americans suffered and won...

@@anthonycase9743 Something that people don't know is when Cortez went to Mexico and the story of Cuauhtemoc. Building a wall to separate people is going backwards. I am born and raised in Los Angeles and have many friends who are Mexican. There are more common interests than people might think. There are many rich people in Mexico as you pointed out. One of the richest men in the world is Mexican. They see paisas at Home Depot and think that represents all Mexicans. Trump should be ashamed for not promoting unity with Mexico. You know how that goes it's not the goal. They want racism and to keep everyone apart. That way they can try to keep people from figuring out what is really going on and how bad they are and have been getting fucked by the so called elite. Bottom line is the people who know are in the 3% and it is hard to tell people what they must seek on their own to know. They buy into the propaganda on various levels and think they are so smart. trump isn't even familiar with California. It's all part of the distraction. Basically the border crossed them.
Twain wrote about propaganda "My country right or wrong." Letters from the Earth. Same shit goes on today.

Reaching both your responses, including out other friend, is one off the things that me proud to an American. But there are basically two types of mind sets here 1) most people who superficially listen to politics and have no actual clue how economics truly work in real life instead of in theory & 2) those who exactly how the economy truly, intuitively functions which from cash flowing from the bottom up-- and not from it trickling down. I am 46 years old and I started working on commercial residential jobsites at the age of 12, with fairly large crews in multiple locations on multiple job sites. Even back then it was on the boderline of being a "NO NO!", however, my Dad was a fairly well known contractor as was his father (at least among the true tradesmen in out community) and several provisions on in the books bank then that made it possible to work kiss that young if they were your own progeny anyway... I just had to make it a priority too not get hurt and suck out when I did stick it whenever I did. As long as there wasn't a serious injury nobody would be striving to prove Any kind of negligence on his part anyways. I'm among of the last hard men... I believer in labor unions in America but i also believe in my own right to work as a general contractor. Right to work laws here are actually misnomers because they (they meaning the bastard politicians and the bastards who have them in their pockets) have hijacked this purpose and inflicted their own agenda on the public which had meant t to be a disguise to hurt the labor unions while also handicapping the contractors and workers that they are supposedly representing-- so in the end nobody wins on our end of performing the work and only the guys with the money are just making more of it... My father had to deal with local union leaders threats but for the moist parthe was one of the few contractors that they left alone... mostly suite to the fact that he has actually trained so many of their masons before they decided you go union. I've had to deal with up north, almost to Michigan, when they started threatening to whip our asses, steal our tools and destroy our trucks. This harassment went on for a week orso until they finally caught me on a bad morning and i put them in their proper place. The same two union reps came intomy jobsite and started talking their same line of shit so i told then exactly what i think of them... "I'm a believer in you two and what you represent. I believe in Labor Unions in the trades because I KNOW that the union and it's regulations saves lives, especialespecially on large projects like hospitals, government buildings and schools-- but how Saree you confer onto MY jobsite and tell me that i have absolutely no right to this work-- steel stud framing and drywall work on a couple of bulkheads in this department store. I'M GOING TO LET YOU TWO OFF WITH A WARNING THIS TIME!!!..." And i proceeded to tell them aboutmy family "My family tree has existed in this country since before this country was even born and my ancestors have lived in Indiana since decades before the Civil War---AND ALL OF THE MEN IN MY FAMILY HAVE BEEN TRADESMEN PERFORMING CONSTRUCTION WORK-- EITHER MASONS OR CARPENTERS OR BOTH!!! SO DON'T COME IN HERE ON MY JOBSITE AND BLOW ME SHIT ABOUT HOW I DON'T DESERVE TO BE WORKING ON THIS JOB-- THE LOSH FAMILY has been here building up this country block by block, brick by brick and board by board since long before either you or your organization has existed and if one of us don't deserve to be here at this moment its you two and what you represent so get the fuck out or get to fighting because IT ENDS!!! TODAY is the LAST TIME that I will tolerate letting either of you talk shit to me and threaten me or any of my men on my jobsite!!! But I'm going to tell you one thing-- if EITHER of you think that you are walking out that fucking door in one fucking piece at this fucking moment then you are sorely mistaken! (Followed by my own loud yet ruefully boisterous laugh) You don't get to come in here and threaten to COME BACK WITH HELP and whip my ass with a bunch of your buddies after I've worked a 16 hour day. NO sir that fight starts right here, right now with just you two verses me-- which should be at least a halfway fair fight for both of you since you two have the odds against me. So which one o of you two wants to get to throw the first punch so I can just get this shit over with and get on with. my day-- which was going to be busy enough even before this shit started-- and now I'm finally running out of patience..." I doubled up my fists and took a defensive stance on the balls of my feet and glanced back and forth at both of them. All of this taking place right in the middle of the open structured fresh produce area right at the front of the store in front of both customers and store personnel so i laughed hard again and I said "and if you try to make a break for the door I PROMISE YOU BOTH the beating that getting ready to give each of you is just going to that much worse," and then i finished each of them off with a steely eyed, razor sharp grin baring my teeth all the way back to my molars. At 6'2" & 200 lbs they KNEW that they had pressed their luck too hard with me and that theywere about to pay for it. Neither of then was as big as me. They stood frozen for a few moments then they both turned towards each other, comically knocking each off balance and began a lightening quick ternse conversation that ended with them both nodding in agreement with each other. They looked at me and both began profusely apologizing for any discomfort that their rhetoric may have caused and before the conversation was over they begged me to apply to become a registered union contractor and offered to send me men who were knowledgeable and experienced apprentices in carpentry that could perform like fully accomplished Journeyman but they themselves didn't recognize that fact so I could get away with paying them like apprentices wages while charging my customers for fully accredited journeymen... Now don't that just beat the band so to speak? Being doubled-crossed by their own union stewards?!? So i laughed and lied, nodding to agree that i promised to give the offer some serious consideration-- off which i had no intention. I let them both make a quick escape after that. I seen them for few minutes everyday for the next couple of weeks. They were always polite as could be from that moment forward. Towards the end one of them "warned" that some of their guys might take things into their own hands and start some shit so i explained to him that was actually his own problem and i proceeded to explain to him that whatever terrible found mine or my men i pinkpromised to delivery it personally right back to the both of them. We chatted making small talk for couple more minutes then bade each other our goodbyes and they left and i didn't didn't see either of them anymore before leaving town... more importantly I never had spot of trouble after that last conversation either lol...

    Remarkable!
I'm not a block layer/mason (I'm a heavy equipment operator) but about 14 years ago I decided i was going to do the block work for my guest cabin with a full basement. I'd never done it before nor do I know anyone that is a mason. I went to the library and got some good books on how to do it. It took me a long time but I got it done and it turned out pretty good I think. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I knew It would be scrutinized so i did it the best I could BUT it took me forever lol it's level, plumb and 14 years later it hasn't cracked or moved at all. These guys are amazing craftsmen. One thing I noticed is they're all right handed with the trowel. Their left arms must be huge from lifting, setting block in comparison to the left.
Another thing, I built the entire cabin myself with some help from friends.
