    Thank you for sharing very informative, I always wondered about what if a whole guitar was torrefied if let’s say I want to simulate really aged vintage one then it’s not only the top that aged? Just curious here 😅 i understand now that bending wood might be more difficult after the process so I think its practicality matter after all, imagine J45 style guitar but the whole guitar was torrefied vs origin vintage good survivor example

    Cool. If somebody wants it can find a oven design and study on thermal wood on the Roukangas guitars site and why lower temperatures are better for instrument use.
    I hope that we will begin to see other wood species in thermal treatment being offered.
    Personal dream is to get a full thickness and heelless Les Paul with torrefied Okume/Spanish cedar and Sycamore for the body and torrefied Spanish cedar neck wrapped in carbon fiber and have the finished guitar weight around 6lb 10oz (3 kg).

    👍 Another major benefit of roasting guitar wood is often overlooked... because it goes to the builder rather the player. Many of the medium to large size manufacturers have intonation warranties. Since builders have little control over what kind of environments their builds are taken into and often have to correct issues that might not even be their fault, roasting (the neck, primarily) it’s almost like an insurance policy for the builder. Nobody likes call backs!

    Fascinating process Robert, thank you for sharing that. I had seen a Rob Cosman video on Birdseye maple where he had a board that had been cooked and I wanted to know more about the process . This video explains it very well .Thanks

    Nice video- Does he say, at 9:50, that torrefied spruce is not subject to humidity issues? or just some hardwoods??

    • @Abdzenq
      @Abdzenq 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Torrefied wood is mostly Immune to Humidity, That's what makes its stable

    Would love to see some more torrefied apple, pear, and plum.
    Normally it's very twisty, unstable, stringy. Considered junk wood, and usually chipped for smoking. Torrefaction would make it stable for instruments. It would be hard to find large diameter pices, since trees are usually grafted onto smaller rootstock for pickers to actually reach the fruit. But they could be great for necks.

    Great video. Now I'm daydreaming about a dreadnought with torrefied red spruce,Brazilian RW,and mahogany. It might resonate so much that you couldn't hold it in your lap while strumming :)

    If I have a torrified top and neck with a non-torrified back and sides, will there be a problem with expansion of the woods at different rates? Thank you for all the videos and happy holidays.

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would imagine so because the back and side woods are a different species anyway. However, just keep your guitar at the proper RH levels and you shouldn't have a problem. Merry Christmas and all the best in 2020

    “Completely dry” but they are using steam to prevent combustion at torrification temperatures? I am a little confused.

      temperature is lower for that process

    I wonder what would happen if cocobolo is torrefied. Would that remove most of the oil?

    Interesting. It seems like torrefied wood has more applications in home building, then in instruments. Another example of I want it, and want it now. Is this a problem for forestry? Where dried lumber is turned over far faster than forests can regenerate and recover? I'll stick to milling a nice piece of spruce, and let it adjust over a couple decades. 2 cents

    Btw do you have experience with cryogenic fret treatment?
    Or floyd rose plates and pins?
    Seems like it could make them a hair more durable.

    Would steaming add back in any moisture content?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hum, I think that would kind of defeat the purpose of torrefication. It might work for furniture but I wouldn't do it for instrument grade wood.

    How exactly do you achieve 0% moisture in wood?
    Where could we send wood inside the usa to have threated by a reputable operator?

      I know a guy who does it in his home oven by tenting his billet in aluminum foil with several hand warmers. Hand warmers remove oxygen through an oxidation reaction. Home ovens are typically accurate enough to hit the needed temperatures and maintain them. His caution to me was to make sure the wood is really dry before. He apparently used the oven for an elevated temp drying step.

    3 steps:
    -drying
    -torrifing for 3 hours
    -? (you forgot to explain in the interview)
    Otherwise, thanks for the video

    Someone somewhere post a diy vacuum oven video. There has to be an affordable, safe way to do this in small shops
