Lex trying to have an ego-fueled redemption arc with the mindset of "Of course I know what's best for Superman, I know him better than anyone!" and Clark wanting nothing to do with any of it and just silently pleading for Lex to leave him alone is such a good re-interpretation of the dynamic between these characters. I can't wait to see where this goes next, especially given that the end of the first issue is hinting at some old rivals of Lex coming back to settle their debts.

This comic feels and writes like a gateway into Superman and his stories simply because this is how I've always been shown and told what he's like with my limited view of so far as just a movie watcher for DC so far I'm really enjoyed this issue. It feels familiar but also new and it makes me want to read more and learn more about Superman's world outside the standard: Lois - girlfriend, Jimmy - Pal, Supergirl - cousin and Lex - billionaire villain, this and Smallville is realy helping with that. It bodes well for showing how he can be attacked emotionally while still being the icon of morality that I want him to be. New social challenges that can't be tanked with invulnerability or punched. As someone who doesn't read the comics, this issue sounds like a great place to start. I watched all of the DCAU as a kid, so that is where I learned of all what I love of DC. Typically, I'd prefer to start at the beginning, but in this case, probably something recent is better. I don't really want to try and catch up on almost a hundred years of comics, so this sounds like a good place as any to jump in. I'm also considering checking out some of the silver age, especially Superman's good friend Jimmy Olsen, sounds fun.

"Kidnapped over 100 times" Been reading comics, off and on, since the late 60's and getting back into it now. I've never expected the same continuity logic from comics as I have from any other media. I'm sort of in the "The panel says this is the first time Superman met Flash so, OK, I'll go with it." camp. With over a thousand stories in some of these titles, you have to become a "current-ist?" and simply go with the story in hand and allow past stories to be echoes of maybe. I remember reading one issue where Superman defeated an alien that had stolen Green Lanterns Ring, easily, returning the ring after calling it a trinket. Then, a couple of months later, read the John Byrne reboot where he's wondering if he's carrying the plane or "flying" it. Ultimately the story that should matter must remain the one in hand with continuity having a relevance curve that is steep and drops away quickly over time. With the internet, becoming pedantic about your fandom is all to easy a rabbit hole to fall down.

I love the art by Jamal Campbell, and the story seems pretty good from what I can tell. Now about Lois. I'm out of touch with the modern character. But she used to have a real adventurous spirit that wanted to be where the action is. I don't think old-school Lois would be satisfied as an editor. Of course, a good writer could probably come up with ways to make sure she still sees her share of excitement. She could also decide she's getting older and has had enough on-the-scene action and really settle into the new role. Or she could struggle to find fulfillment in the new situation, decide it's not for her, and step down. They could go a few ways with it. Interesting.

Filling Perry's shoes is a very tall order. Storywise Perry White is the Daily Planet, someone like Lex or Livewire taking over would be interesting but Perry would get his newspaper back. Supercorp, I do love that it is not Superman's thing, but if he doesn't use it, it would mean people, he is brilliant but he's the kind of guy at least to me who would if asked test something that would be dangerous to a normal person but wouldn't bother him like studying the effects of a nuclear explosion. (Was excited to see Livewire from watching your retrospective and TAS back in the day. The story was fun to jump into, and the art and panel work is as good as you say. Livewire seems to be being pitched as a Joe Rogen/Alex Jones type, and it would make an odd amount of sense for her to sell an "energy" supplement.)

[Referring to 12:04] This channel is where most of my comic/specific character knowledge comes from (discovering them on Top 10 Nerd) so when I say I don't know much about Mercy that doesn't mean much (plus I'm not a Superman fan so I miss out on some cool supportings and rogues) but she's one of my favorite characters on the live action Titans show on HBOmax.

Did anyone identify the other villains on the monitors: I think I saw Parasite, Silver Banshee, Bizarro, Livewire, Lobo and possibly Atomic Skull and Toyman. Anyone identify the red headed woman?

Having Lex turn over Lexcorp to Clark is so very Angel S5 when Angel was given Wolfram & Heart after Angel stopped an apocalyptic event.

Thank you for this informative look at the latest Superman issue! It's been a long while since I've even read a comic, although, looking at the incredible artwork of Jamal Campbell, might spur me to return to comics!

    SuperCorp is canon!
Instead of sporting her DCAU look, they redesigned Mercy to resemble Sasha.

I'll be picking this up tomorrow and I can't wait! I've always wanted to get on board with a Superman run and I'm a fan of Williamson's work, so I was looking forward to this. It looks exactly like what I've been waiting for - a back-to-basics Superman, with Clark at the Daily Planet and Supes fighting some of his classic rogues. Plus, as a big DCAU fan, the STAS vibes have me extra excited.
Side note: is Brian Michael Bendis still at DC? I don't think I've seen his name on anything since his Justice League run ended nearly a year ago.

Absolutely loved it! Best start since Rebirth! Not sure Lois, who can't spell, can be editor. It seems like it will take her off the board. Mercy's arms! lol...I noticed them too! She is super appealing....but did anyone else think she looked like Ally from the Sunstone series???? Can't wait for the next issue!

Fantastic art and fantastic story energy. Quick note: Clark is so huge that you'd pick him out as Superman based on sheer volume alone. To hide his identity, Clark needs to start downing protein drinks all day and "casually" (no shade) mentioning an interest in amateur body building,. Cuz I think Jimmy could tie one of Clark's shirts to 2 polls and use it as a hammock. But it's all so fun, you can also let it go. Fun for me at least would be to have Lois lose it at one budget meeting and just sarcastically yell out: "The shareholders, the shareholders, won't someone please think of the shareholders," and then get cricket chirps. Ha! Also, seriously, have Lois called a "woke" choice for editor-in-chief, *while* Lois also starts having a lot of more people telling her what she wants to hear and feeding her ego. Then add more to it with Lois having to decide how clickbait-y and gaslight-y the Daily Planet stories need to be. Not that media on either side do that all the time everyday. Nope. Not at all. There's a lot to explore with Lois, especially with Clark as now head of Lexcorp and them now being a more powerful power couple in various ways.

I'm left wondering, why do people feel the need to shake Superman up? Baseline Superman, Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Lex, and the gang are fine. You don't have to lose the secret identity, de-power Superman, make him walk across America, or any of the gimmicky stuff that some writers feel they have to do to make Superman work. People have been making Superman work for like 80+ years now; everyone else could do it, today's writers could too.
This is not to say that Superman should be kept from changing in any ways at all. The addition of Jon Kent has really made Superman even better, and I have to admit, I might have dismissed it as a gimmick except that it worked out so incredibly well. But there are some tricks that just never work. Ditching the secret identity means losing the Superman / Clark duality, and getting rid of that has never once made things better. Making Superman hated by the masses has never made things better either. Change for change's sake is foolish; think long and hard about what you would lose with any proposed change.

First of all yes, I do remember Society, and yes, I'm very sure showing anything of the last bit of that film would get you a serious TOS violation.
Second, I *love* this take on Superman.
I'm old school. My first exposure to Superman was through the kids cartoon Superfriends way back in 1973 and Superman: The Movie was my first movie experience at the tender age of ten. The Donner influence as well as the animated series sing though there and it's hard for my nostalgia not to get triggred and buy into it.
And when everything is said and done, Superman *is* pop culture in so many ways, and his story and character so universal, it's hard not to simply go with the most straight up version of his character.
He worked out of the gate in 1938, and it's a testament to the strength of his character that he still does all these decades later. And I'm here for it.
