Simply calling spider-man a burden is so reductive and it pains me when people say that. Spider-Man/Peter Park is so amazing as a character because his complexity runs deeper than so many people give him credit for. Peter's relationship with spider-man is complicated and multidimensional AND it changes. He can't escape the status quo but that doesn't mean he is a static character
Yeah, if it was purely a burden he wouldn't continue to do it, or at least it would be a lot easier for him to give up. It's neither fully a blessing or fully a curse.
I’m so sick of people saying Peter had to hate being Spider-Man, like if you really think that then you haven’t read the comics, Peter actually enjoying being Spider-Man and doing good things for people is such a big part of the character that it’s the reason why huge moments like him giving up on Spider-Man because some awful happens due to being Spider-Man are so important. Otherwise if being Spider-Man was always a shit bucket then Peter would never be “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” he’d be your depressed, rarely around wall crawler, it provides an escape and even the classic Ditko Lee comics prove it.
Are you kidding? Peter IS constantly depressed becaus of Spider-Man. He is Spider-Man mainly because he believes he HAS TO, not because he wants to. I think what's worth noting is that the "Peter constantly hated being Spider-Man" doesn't even truly apply to the Raimi films, which is where that idea is usually attributed to.
He has a hate and love relationship with spiderman. One his more free as spiderman and more confident and is himself more. But he is truly Peter Parker his personal life always suffers as the result of spiderman. Him being spiderman made him let his freinds down fell relationships 😔 . Barely able to keep a Job A bad apartment not being able to pursue his life goal. Ps4 Spiderman did a good job showing how Peter always lose due to spiderman . He suffers in silence 🔕 as Peter Parker well spiderman wins.
One reason the stories changed and became more serious was because the writing method changed. Originally, they used the method Stan developed to allow him to write so many monthly series-- Stan would hold a meeting with the artist to discuss story ideas, then write an outline for the story they decided on. Then the artist would go home and draw the story, sometimes adding new details or changing things. Trusted artists like Ditko and Kirby were given wide latitude to change things, which is why fans argue so much over who wrote what. Afterwards, Stan would write the dialogue for the finished artwork, incorporating whatever plot changes the artist made. But Stan and Steve ended up fighting a lot, and eventually Ditko refused to meet directly. So they switched to Ditko coming up with the plots entirely on his own, for both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, with Stan only writing the dialogue after Ditko was finished. So the stories went from being Stan and Steve collaborations to being all Steve, at least for the plot. When Romita took over, they went back to Stan's regular writing method, and of course he now had Romita's style mixed with his instead of Ditko's.
This explains why in general the Romita era was lighthearted again, because Stan had more control than he did with 'If this be my destiny' and the few Ditko stories that followed.
Ditko never refused to meet directly as he visited the studio commonly. It was Lee that wouldn't see Ditko and, after relenting and giving Ditko plotting credit, Lee refused to pay him as a plotter.
I am a huge Spider-Man fan and I have always said that there are enough different versions of this character so that people can pick there favourite. Sam Raimi's version is one that I respect more than I like because it is the first version on the big screen and has all the basic looks of the franchise from Spider-Man to MJ to Norman Osborn but if we look at it to see how it represents the themes and tones of the very original iteration it is all wrong. I always hate that when I here people complain about Jon Watts' version there argument is usually one of three things... 1. Uncle Ben isn't a more important character - Ben was never that until the Raimi trilogy 2. Peter Parker is Iron Boy - Peter has always looked up to the superhero community in particular Mr. Fantastic and the Fantastic Four but since they couldn't use Reed it makes sense that they replaced them with Iron Man and the Avengers. 3. The villains plans having nothing to do with Spider-Man - This has been the case for almost every Spider-Man film with the exception of two, Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in every other case the villain wants something for themselves and Spider-Man just keeps getting in the way until they feel they need to kill him
I wonder how the first spider-man film eould have been like if other heroes could have been mentioned. Making Uncle Ben Peter's hero in a world without other super heroes makes sense to me. It's fun seeing peter try to be like the heroes he looks up to in the MCU

It's kinda like younger Peter, he wants to be as good as the people he saw on TV. and as the comics shows, the older he got, the confident he became about himself, now he's the mentor to younger heroes who grew up watching him on TV.

You make a great point about Homecoming being more comic acurrate than people give it credit for. Spider-Man at his score is a small-scale superhero, a "friendly neighbor". He gets dragged into large global or cosmic events sometimes, but he's mostly the hero for the little guy.
It's also kinda shocking to see how little Peter spent in highschool. Nowadays we associate the character with that, but in the comics that was just a very short era.
I think the reason Homecoming's approach to storytelling doesn't work for me is because it works perfectly for a comic book or an episode of a tv series, not a two hour film.

@@michealmahmoud6391 In Civil War we barely see him do anything before he's zipped off to fight Cap's team and in Homecoming while he is helping the little guy at the beginning of the movie he's bored doing that and wants to go after bigger stuff and then spends the rest of the film going after Vulture who if anything is the little guy.
I love seeing people delve into the real Spidey history. As successful and fun as he can be as a mascot and inadaptations, there's so much more complexity to what Lee and Ditko (and later creators) made than most people notice. While a lot of long-running comic characters got deeper and more dimensional as years of stories by different writers left their marks, Peter Parker is a complicated dude filled with contradictions from the start.
You going through the first comics reminded me of how close it was to Spectacular Spider-Man separation of personal and superhero life, have you thought of making an analysis of it.
Y'know what? MCU isn't my absolute favorite out of all the movies, and I often saw a lot of flaws in it. I did enjoy some parts of both movies, and am willing to see the third one that comes out, but I never considered it on the top of my list. But I see now how it ties a lot to these early comics. Before I just thought the MCU Spiderman movies were mostly random, with certain references here and there, but after watching this it makes me wonder if the writers really did their research. I have a little more respect for the newer portrayal of spiderman now (well, at least in Homecoming). Instead of viewing Spiderman as a curse (like in the Sam Reimi versions) Peter Parker uses his new gifts as a tool to treck through the hardships.
Thank you for realizing that MCU Spider-Man isn't a joke. PS: I'm not being sarcastic, I like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies. They are amazing movies but I personally related more with MCU Peter Parker/Spider-Man more than Sam Raimi's.
@@SpFlash1523 yeah, I gotta agree with you there, having just rewatched Spiderman Homecoming yesterday. The Reimi trilogy (although I still enjoy them) are honestly really corny and super dramatic. MCU Spiderman definitely feels a lot more relatable. He feels more like a person who just happens to have powers rather than "the ultimate superhero". He honestly feels like someone you would know personally, or just someone who happens to be around where you live. Reimi Spiderman I feel was treated more like a "god" around everyday citizens, but in the MCU they see Spiderman as one of them. He just happens to be able to do cool flips and stop airplanes. It's a good portrayal of "Friendly Neighboorhood Spiderman."

Use Stark (actually Rogers would be a better option) as a background character, serving as a inspirational role but not being a mentor figure. Also Peter lacks the teen angst, he can't be Spidey without teen angst. MCU Spidey can be good, but at the moment, he is the lesser one of the trio. PS: John Hughes is really bad, don't use him as a reference for your teen movie.
I have a feeling most problems with the MCU Spider-man is that we're so used to Spider-man being isolated in his stories, where Uncle Ben is a messiah like figure and Spider-man is in his prime off the bat. As well as the belief that Spider-man brings constant drama to Peter's life being viewed as a necessary part of his character based solely on the Raimi Movies (And a bit of the 90's animated show). While I do wish some details with the character were a bit different, I still enjoy everything they've done and how they've gone deeper into the character based on his history than just what the fans always talk about (again, partially due to the Raimi Trilogy creating something of a separate standard the fans view as truly representing Spider-man, even if it's the complete opposite of the comics)

I’m reading this run rn and gotta be honest is some of the funniest things I’ve met in a while. Dude the Tinkerer was like a member of a random alien race that was spying on humans via Radios. (Let that sink in freaken RADIOS) and Spidey beats them up, they flee because red blue guy be scary and then Peter has a mask of the Tinkerer’s face saying he found it somewhere. you know i randomly had this video recommended and after a watch, I still gotta say Raimis spidey is my favorite, but this video helped me realize why spiderman is so popular. It doesnt matter what movie, show or game hes in or what story is being told. At some point you will find a piece of spiderman media you resonate with and find to be "my favorite spiderman". With how different Raimis movies were from the comics, its pretty obvious as you dont gotta tell a spiderman story one set way. And I will always say Raimis spiderman is my favorite due to personal reasons. Being a kid who always moved and never got to have friends for too long, being able to see a superhero whos kinda in the same boat, has life beat him down but still chooses to be spiderman, enjoys what he does, I saw that as amazing, and solidified him as my favorite hero. Then I read the comics and was a bit confused thinking "wheres uncle ben, how come peter isnt as much of a nerd. But I was a kid and chalked it up to my terrible literary skills or something lol.
Every time you make a Spidey video, I become happy because you’re one of the top people that examines Spider-Man in a way that I can fully understand. Your videos are so well made, and it makes me want to add my voice to some of the acting you do lol. You’re essays are great man.
The main thing I have been pondering lately is how badly he damaged comics - he is the reason comics are viewed as kids books and I believe he is the reason I believe that comic books faded in popularity for the general readers. Which is sad because comics are great.

This was fantastic and should have more views. I appreciated you using clips from Homecoming & FFH. Those movies, and the MCU as a whole, adapt the comics in different ways than people are used to. The impression I got was not that they didn't like Spider-Man and wanted to change him, but that they loved Spider-Man to the point where they felt comfortable remixing everything. Yet everything is still there. People tend to hold the early comics in reverence, but they don't actually sit and think about the stories like you did. In Homecoming, when Peter is eager to get out of school and go be Spider-Man, I was very pleasantly surprised to see something like that. Of course being a superhero has a level of fun, and therapy, and irreverence to it regardless of how dark it gets. Can't explain this without making my own video essay lol, but in everything the MCU does, and the way it adapts things, it feels like Feige & em are on the same wavelength Marvel has always been on since Stan and Jack. It completely tracks with the spirit and history of Marvel ,and why it's such an enduring, kinetic brand in the first place.

@@dope8878 Shang-Chi is in San Francisco, not LA, and his apartment was clearly a very shitty one-room concrete place. Peter can't afford things at all, the only fancy thing he has is his suit which was a gift from another hero. Him not being able to afford things is quite literally right in his introduction in Civil War where he says he dumpster dives for old tech to fix up. In No Way Home one of his lines is literally "and I'm still broke". In Spidey's stories thus far in the MCU they haven't made the money woes of being working class as present a theme as in the comics but it's still there. I'm poor too but I can relate to many of the characters
I just recently came across your channel and I have to say, it’s great! You clearly put in a lot of work for your videos and don’t just do the “I’m going to read the solicitations and be negative” most comicbook channels tend to do. (Nothing wrong with doing that if it’s what works, but as a viewer that’s only entertaining for 1-2 people). Your videos clearly have a love for the deeper meaning of Comics and I love it so much. As someone that has read a handful of the old comics here and there but never a full story in sequence (though I know what the events are generally), this also shows the evolution of characters and how they were made to be what we know and how that sometimes isn’t the best and most ideal evolution, and in other times that’s the exact right evolution. Also this video specifically highlighted and further supported to me why the MCU Spider-man, especially as of No Way Home, feels like the most genuinely true Spider-man we’ve seen in live action and maybe even in any non-comic book depiction. This really challenged my thoughts on the John Watts movies. I can see how they're comic accurate to the early years of Spider-Man. Maybe I'm just not for the lighthearted tone or I'm just blinded by the old Raimi and Webb movies. Maybe this tone for Spider-Man just works better as a show instead of movies, why is possibly why I love the Spidey cartoons despite having the same tone as the Tom Holland movies.
7:15 NWH Spoilers i firmly believe that this is what happened to MCU Spider-Man, that, unlike Tobey and Andrew, who heard it through Uncle Ben, he learned by himself (just like in Amazing Fantasy) and never actually heard it directly, which ended up making him react way different to what meant "being Spider-Man" until he actually lost May and had to hear it to emphasize to him what means his morals. I hope they confirm this in Freshman Year tho cuz that would make a lotta sense imo
I think the idolisation of Uncle Ben was, for me, first apparent in the 90s animated series. Whilst Peter's Uncle Ben was only ever shown in flashbacks he was instrumental in Peter's attitude towards being a hero and an alternate version of Ben actually saved the multiverse in the final episode.
I really liked this one. I’m reading through the Lee/Ditko run now and it’s so worth it. If you want to get to know Spider-Man, you have to start from the beginning and watch his development. Maybe not ever issue is essential and it’s a lot to read but it’s all entertaining.
I love this video immensely. Coming from a person who’ve lost a lot in his life, I will always correlate to Peter Parker indefinitely. Thank you for reminding me to pick up where I left off on the comics.

(1/3)for the golden years bit... I'd disagree. Peter Parker's life may be comedic, but it's not care free. His romantic life is always's in an imbalance, his hero life always interferes with his daily life making everyone not like him, his ego gets the better of him, his anger makes it worse, his photography job has him working for a guy who constantly shits on him, his old frail aunt constantly worrying about him, constantly having money troubles. Basically what I'm getting at is... Those first few issues were very funny(and they still are to this day imo) but they weren't "carefree". It's a very delicate balance that has never really been matched and I can understand why. Those were Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics. You can't really recapture their charm, you could only take your bets and give it your own flair; understand why it existed, and know where you can integrate yourself innit. Spectacular got there pretty well but rushed a few comic aspects, Homecoming tried to but it fell flat by making the school stuff too carefree(especially in ffh), the Amazing movies almost got the right balance but rushed and forgot about so many plotlines while trying to make an interconnected universe.
In addition, you've said this multiple times about how "uncle ben was only mentioned a few times" yeah, I'd agree, because in some aspects he is a plotpoint, but he's also more than that. The impact of Ben's death wasn't just that he learnt to be responsible, it was that he learnt *why he has to be responsible* (in his own eyes), and issue, after issue he and the world keep hammering that home because of that one mistake. Less money to pay rent, less time to be with people he loves, a constant burden that is arguably shouldered by his own stubborness to not make the same mistake, and because of how stubborn he is *to not make that same mistake* it inadvertently causes the first few problems he has to deal with. For me, why I love that first run was because it was dramatic, but it hid all that drama behind comedy, wit, and sarcasm, and that'll always encapsulate what I love about the character(at least in my opinion)
And I guess how I view Spider-Man's arc from teen to adult is: a stubborn kid learning to open up. From only trying to join the Fantastic Four to get money to Joining the FF because they're his friends, from hating Ironman with all his guts to standing side-by-side with him as a fellow Avenger(until Civil War, but let's forget everything after 2005 for the sake of argument), From being so scared that his aunt might know his secret to being happy she knows it(again, let's forget everything after 2005 for the sake of argument). The more I grow up the more I've learnt to love *Spider-Man: The Justifiable Fear of Opening Up*
*This* Just because the newer trendy films got some aspects right about comic Spider-man's themes and such, doesn't mean they are completely accurate to the source material nor is it okay to automatically clown on the Raimi films that came before the newer ones. It's just another *loose interpretation* of a story done by writers and producers trying to make their own vision of Spider-man in order to make a quick tie-in with the now popular MCU films, but their interpretation still misses the mark or they mistranslate some things about the character and we end up getting a sterilized version of the character in order to appeal to the executives at Disney who are telling the writers/producers what they should and shouldn't do.
That moment in the comics where Jameson admits that Spider-Man is a hero and he is jealous of him. That part got me as a kid and made go “wow”. It’s my preferred reasoning for Jonah hating Spider-Man than the retcons they always seem to do in the modern comics
This should be required viewing for any Raimi shill who thinks Tobey and those films (as great as they are) are the most accurate portrayals of this character.

Shoot dude this is literally what they’re gonna do with MCU spidey: the Home trilogy was Spider-Man looking up/elsewhere (stark/f4) and the next trilogy (which happens to also be post high school peter will be him looking inward and hence becoming a better superhero. Well done
Great video, but small note: Peter left FF in TASM #1 not because FF is non-profit organization, but because someone from FF (most likely Johnny) said that Spider-Man is a wanted by the police menace, which means for Peter that they believe people like Jonah who are biased towards Spider-Man.
No he left cause they didn't pay. Johnny talking smack was after he tried to break in to the baxter building. Reed tries to get Pete to stay but he is so desperate for money he doesn't see that Reed would have helped if he explained better. One of the lessons you g Pete has to learn is to ask for help
This is why I love spectacular spiderman venom arch. Uncle Ben is finally revealed during a moment where Peter is dealing with a moment of self doubt, Ben is a stone in the foundation of peter self reliance not a lingering ghost of his failure.
That’s why the Raimi films highlighted it’s a gift, and a curse. Same can be said about Responsibility. That’s why Raimis Spider-Man is the most comic accurate imo

Ppl hate on MCU Spiderman, because they have nostalgia for Raimi's and Webb's Spidermen and have a kinda hate for Tom's Spiderman bcuz he's in the MCU so there's cameos of different MCU characters and he's an Avenger, just like in the comics, the other Spidermen are in an universe by himself, which is crazy to me how they try to shame the current Spiderman is as comicbook accurate as every other MCU superhero, Marvel comicbooks were always so comical and witty, yet had real stake and grounded yet it's balanced and the right amount of drama. PS4 Spiderman and MCU's iteration are as close to perfect as we will ever get. Hate it or love it, Tom Holland is the best all around live action Spiderman. I think that panel of Peter/Spidey deciding to save Flash really helps your point on masks and personas. One side is Peter Parker, with the revenge fantasy of the average bullied kid, and the other is Spider-Man being heroic and doing the right thing. The divided face is the prime example of the split persona thing. Also, it’s pretty funny that guys like Reed Richards and Ben Grimm belong in Peter and Johnny’s generation even though they’re around Jameson’s age.
The most unbelievable part of Spider-Man starting out at college is that people see him not talking to anyone and assume he’s a snob, not that there is a lot wrong with him.
I guess I fell in love with the Ultimate version. Way better than the original I think. It's really sad it came to an end. SPOILER: on the Ultimate version, Peter thinks Ben died because of him. So his curse is that he'll never stop trying to help people, doing as his uncle said because he's in agony and feels really guilty about what happened. His last moments on the comics were all about him telling Ben that he couldn't save him, but manage to save her. So he's really always searching for the forgiveness of uncle. This approach is way more dramatic and appealing for me.

Simply calling spider-man a burden is so reductive and it pains me when people say that. Spider-Man/Peter Park is so amazing as a character because his complexity runs deeper than so many people give him credit for. Peter's relationship with spider-man is complicated and multidimensional AND it changes. He can't escape the status quo but that doesn't mean he is a static character
Yeah, if it was purely a burden he wouldn't continue to do it, or at least it would be a lot easier for him to give up. It's neither fully a blessing or fully a curse.

I’m so sick of people saying Peter had to hate being Spider-Man, like if you really think that then you haven’t read the comics, Peter actually enjoying being Spider-Man and doing good things for people is such a big part of the character that it’s the reason why huge moments like him giving up on Spider-Man because some awful happens due to being Spider-Man are so important. Otherwise if being Spider-Man was always a shit bucket then Peter would never be “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” he’d be your depressed, rarely around wall crawler, it provides an escape and even the classic Ditko Lee comics prove it.

I think what's worth noting is that the "Peter constantly hated being Spider-Man" doesn't even truly apply to the Raimi films, which is where that idea is usually attributed to.
He has a hate and love relationship with spiderman.
One his more free as spiderman and more confident and is himself more.
But he is truly Peter Parker his personal life always suffers as the result of spiderman. Him being spiderman made him let his freinds down fell relationships 😔 . Barely able to keep a Job A bad apartment not being able to pursue his life goal.

One reason the stories changed and became more serious was because the writing method changed. Originally, they used the method Stan developed to allow him to write so many monthly series-- Stan would hold a meeting with the artist to discuss story ideas, then write an outline for the story they decided on. Then the artist would go home and draw the story, sometimes adding new details or changing things. Trusted artists like Ditko and Kirby were given wide latitude to change things, which is why fans argue so much over who wrote what. Afterwards, Stan would write the dialogue for the finished artwork, incorporating whatever plot changes the artist made.
But Stan and Steve ended up fighting a lot, and eventually Ditko refused to meet directly. So they switched to Ditko coming up with the plots entirely on his own, for both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, with Stan only writing the dialogue after Ditko was finished.
So the stories went from being Stan and Steve collaborations to being all Steve, at least for the plot.
When Romita took over, they went back to Stan's regular writing method, and of course he now had Romita's style mixed with his instead of Ditko's.
This explains why in general the Romita era was lighthearted again, because Stan had more control than he did with 'If this be my destiny' and the few Ditko stories that followed.
Ditko never refused to meet directly as he visited the studio commonly. It was Lee that wouldn't see Ditko and, after relenting and giving Ditko plotting credit, Lee refused to pay him as a plotter.
This actually changes my opinion on MCU Spider-Man and know i feel like it will change in tone in the college movies.

I am a huge Spider-Man fan and I have always said that there are enough different versions of this character so that people can pick there favourite. Sam Raimi's version is one that I respect more than I like because it is the first version on the big screen and has all the basic looks of the franchise from Spider-Man to MJ to Norman Osborn but if we look at it to see how it represents the themes and tones of the very original iteration it is all wrong. I always hate that when I here people complain about Jon Watts' version there argument is usually one of three things...
1. Uncle Ben isn't a more important character - Ben was never that until the Raimi trilogy
2. Peter Parker is Iron Boy - Peter has always looked up to the superhero community in particular Mr. Fantastic and the Fantastic Four but since they couldn't use Reed it makes sense that they replaced them with Iron Man and the Avengers.
3. The villains plans having nothing to do with Spider-Man - This has been the case for almost every Spider-Man film with the exception of two, Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in every other case the villain wants something for themselves and Spider-Man just keeps getting in the way until they feel they need to kill him
I wonder how the first spider-man film eould have been like if other heroes could have been mentioned. Making Uncle Ben Peter's hero in a world without other super heroes makes sense to me. It's fun seeing peter try to be like the heroes he looks up to in the MCU

You make a great point about Homecoming being more comic acurrate than people give it credit for. Spider-Man at his score is a small-scale superhero, a "friendly neighbor". He gets dragged into large global or cosmic events sometimes, but he's mostly the hero for the little guy.
It's also kinda shocking to see how little Peter spent in highschool. Nowadays we associate the character with that, but in the comics that was just a very short era.
I think the reason Homecoming's approach to storytelling doesn't work for me is because it works perfectly for a comic book or an episode of a tv series, not a two hour film.
I think the problem is in the MCU he's barely shown being the hero for the little guy or friendly neighborhood

In Civil War we barely see him do anything before he's zipped off to fight Cap's team and in Homecoming while he is helping the little guy at the beginning of the movie he's bored doing that and wants to go after bigger stuff and then spends the rest of the film going after Vulture who if anything is the little guy.

I love seeing people delve into the real Spidey history. As successful and fun as he can be as a mascot and inadaptations, there's so much more complexity to what Lee and Ditko (and later creators) made than most people notice. While a lot of long-running comic characters got deeper and more dimensional as years of stories by different writers left their marks, Peter Parker is a complicated dude filled with contradictions from the start.

You going through the first comics reminded me of how close it was to Spectacular Spider-Man separation of personal and superhero life, have you thought of making an analysis of it.
Y'know what? MCU isn't my absolute favorite out of all the movies, and I often saw a lot of flaws in it. I did enjoy some parts of both movies, and am willing to see the third one that comes out, but I never considered it on the top of my list. But I see now how it ties a lot to these early comics. Before I just thought the MCU Spiderman movies were mostly random, with certain references here and there, but after watching this it makes me wonder if the writers really did their research. I have a little more respect for the newer portrayal of spiderman now (well, at least in Homecoming). Instead of viewing Spiderman as a curse (like in the Sam Reimi versions) Peter Parker uses his new gifts as a tool to treck through the hardships.
Thank you for realizing that MCU Spider-Man isn't a joke. PS: I'm not being sarcastic, I like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies. They are amazing movies but I personally related more with MCU Peter Parker/Spider-Man more than Sam Raimi's.
@@SpFlash1523 yeah, I gotta agree with you there, having just rewatched Spiderman Homecoming yesterday. The Reimi trilogy (although I still enjoy them) are honestly really corny and super dramatic. MCU Spiderman definitely feels a lot more relatable. He feels more like a person who just happens to have powers rather than "the ultimate superhero". He honestly feels like someone you would know personally, or just someone who happens to be around where you live. Reimi Spiderman I feel was treated more like a "god" around everyday citizens, but in the MCU they see Spiderman as one of them. He just happens to be able to do cool flips and stop airplanes. It's a good portrayal of "Friendly Neighboorhood Spiderman."

Use Stark (actually Rogers would be a better option) as a background character, serving as a inspirational role but not being a mentor figure. Also Peter lacks the teen angst, he can't be Spidey without teen angst. MCU Spidey can be good, but at the moment, he is the lesser one of the trio. PS: John Hughes is really bad, don't use him as a reference for your teen movie.
I have a feeling most problems with the MCU Spider-man is that we're so used to Spider-man being isolated in his stories, where Uncle Ben is a messiah like figure and Spider-man is in his prime off the bat. As well as the belief that Spider-man brings constant drama to Peter's life being viewed as a necessary part of his character based solely on the Raimi Movies (And a bit of the 90's animated show).
While I do wish some details with the character were a bit different, I still enjoy everything they've done and how they've gone deeper into the character based on his history than just what the fans always talk about (again, partially due to the Raimi Trilogy creating something of a separate standard the fans view as truly representing Spider-man, even if it's the complete opposite of the comics)

you know i randomly had this video recommended and after a watch, I still gotta say Raimis spidey is my favorite, but this video helped me realize why spiderman is so popular. It doesnt matter what movie, show or game hes in or what story is being told. At some point you will find a piece of spiderman media you resonate with and find to be "my favorite spiderman". With how different Raimis movies were from the comics, its pretty obvious as you dont gotta tell a spiderman story one set way. And I will always say Raimis spiderman is my favorite due to personal reasons. Being a kid who always moved and never got to have friends for too long, being able to see a superhero whos kinda in the same boat, has life beat him down but still chooses to be spiderman, enjoys what he does, I saw that as amazing, and solidified him as my favorite hero. Then I read the comics and was a bit confused thinking "wheres uncle ben, how come peter isnt as much of a nerd. But I was a kid and chalked it up to my terrible literary skills or something lol.
Every time you make a Spidey video, I become happy because you’re one of the top people that examines Spider-Man in a way that I can fully understand. Your videos are so well made, and it makes me want to add my voice to some of the acting you do lol. You’re essays are great man.

3:08 Fredric Wertham, yup. His book resulted in the Comics Code Authority, which was the Hays Code for the comic book industry and just as helpful.
The main thing I have been pondering lately is how badly he damaged comics - he is the reason comics are viewed as kids books and I believe he is the reason I believe that comic books faded in popularity for the general readers. Which is sad because comics are great.

This was fantastic and should have more views. I appreciated you using clips from Homecoming & FFH. Those movies, and the MCU as a whole, adapt the comics in different ways than people are used to. The impression I got was not that they didn't like Spider-Man and wanted to change him, but that they loved Spider-Man to the point where they felt comfortable remixing everything. Yet everything is still there. People tend to hold the early comics in reverence, but they don't actually sit and think about the stories like you did.
In Homecoming, when Peter is eager to get out of school and go be Spider-Man, I was very pleasantly surprised to see something like that. Of course being a superhero has a level of fun, and therapy, and irreverence to it regardless of how dark it gets.
Can't explain this without making my own video essay lol, but in everything the MCU does, and the way it adapts things, it feels like Feige & em are on the same wavelength Marvel has always been on since Stan and Jack. It completely tracks with the spirit and history of Marvel ,and why it's such an enduring, kinetic brand in the first place.

@@dope8878 Shang-Chi is in San Francisco, not LA, and his apartment was clearly a very shitty one-room concrete place. Peter can't afford things at all, the only fancy thing he has is his suit which was a gift from another hero. Him not being able to afford things is quite literally right in his introduction in Civil War where he says he dumpster dives for old tech to fix up. In No Way Home one of his lines is literally "and I'm still broke". In Spidey's stories thus far in the MCU they haven't made the money woes of being working class as present a theme as in the comics but it's still there. I'm poor too but I can relate to many of the characters

I just recently came across your channel and I have to say, it’s great! You clearly put in a lot of work for your videos and don’t just do the “I’m going to read the solicitations and be negative” most comicbook channels tend to do. (Nothing wrong with doing that if it’s what works, but as a viewer that’s only entertaining for 1-2 people).
Your videos clearly have a love for the deeper meaning of Comics and I love it so much. As someone that has read a handful of the old comics here and there but never a full story in sequence (though I know what the events are generally), this also shows the evolution of characters and how they were made to be what we know and how that sometimes isn’t the best and most ideal evolution, and in other times that’s the exact right evolution.
Also this video specifically highlighted and further supported to me why the MCU Spider-man, especially as of No Way Home, feels like the most genuinely true Spider-man we’ve seen in live action and maybe even in any non-comic book depiction.

This really challenged my thoughts on the John Watts movies. I can see how they're comic accurate to the early years of Spider-Man. Maybe I'm just not for the lighthearted tone or I'm just blinded by the old Raimi and Webb movies. Maybe this tone for Spider-Man just works better as a show instead of movies, why is possibly why I love the Spidey cartoons despite having the same tone as the Tom Holland movies.

i firmly believe that this is what happened to MCU Spider-Man, that, unlike Tobey and Andrew, who heard it through Uncle Ben, he learned by himself (just like in Amazing Fantasy) and never actually heard it directly, which ended up making him react way different to what meant "being Spider-Man" until he actually lost May and had to hear it to emphasize to him what means his morals.

I think the idolisation of Uncle Ben was, for me, first apparent in the 90s animated series. Whilst Peter's Uncle Ben was only ever shown in flashbacks he was instrumental in Peter's attitude towards being a hero and an alternate version of Ben actually saved the multiverse in the final episode.

I remember reading Ultimate Spider-Man first and thinking Peter was kind of a dick, now I know Peter has always been one deep down even in 616
I really liked this one. I’m reading through the Lee/Ditko run now and it’s so worth it. If you want to get to know Spider-Man, you have to start from the beginning and watch his development. Maybe not ever issue is essential and it’s a lot to read but it’s all entertaining.

(1/3)for the golden years bit... I'd disagree. Peter Parker's life may be comedic, but it's not care free. His romantic life is always's in an imbalance, his hero life always interferes with his daily life making everyone not like him, his ego gets the better of him, his anger makes it worse, his photography job has him working for a guy who constantly shits on him, his old frail aunt constantly worrying about him, constantly having money troubles. Basically what I'm getting at is... Those first few issues were very funny(and they still are to this day imo) but they weren't "carefree".
It's a very delicate balance that has never really been matched and I can understand why. Those were Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics. You can't really recapture their charm, you could only take your bets and give it your own flair; understand why it existed, and know where you can integrate yourself innit.
Spectacular got there pretty well but rushed a few comic aspects, Homecoming tried to but it fell flat by making the school stuff too carefree(especially in ffh), the Amazing movies almost got the right balance but rushed and forgot about so many plotlines while trying to make an interconnected universe.
In addition, you've said this multiple times about how "uncle ben was only mentioned a few times" yeah, I'd agree, because in some aspects he is a plotpoint, but he's also more than that. The impact of Ben's death wasn't just that he learnt to be responsible, it was that he learnt *why he has to be responsible* (in his own eyes), and issue, after issue he and the world keep hammering that home because of that one mistake. Less money to pay rent, less time to be with people he loves, a constant burden that is arguably shouldered by his own stubborness to not make the same mistake, and because of how stubborn he is *to not make that same mistake* it inadvertently causes the first few problems he has to deal with.
For me, why I love that first run was because it was dramatic, but it hid all that drama behind comedy, wit, and sarcasm, and that'll always encapsulate what I love about the character(at least in my opinion)
And I guess how I view Spider-Man's arc from teen to adult is: a stubborn kid learning to open up. From only trying to join the Fantastic Four to get money to Joining the FF because they're his friends, from hating Ironman with all his guts to standing side-by-side with him as a fellow Avenger(until Civil War, but let's forget everything after 2005 for the sake of argument), From being so scared that his aunt might know his secret to being happy she knows it(again, let's forget everything after 2005 for the sake of argument).

Just because the newer trendy films got some aspects right about comic Spider-man's themes and such, doesn't mean they are completely accurate to the source material nor is it okay to automatically clown on the Raimi films that came before the newer ones.
It's just another *loose interpretation* of a story done by writers and producers trying to make their own vision of Spider-man in order to make a quick tie-in with the now popular MCU films, but their interpretation still misses the mark or they mistranslate some things about the character and we end up getting a sterilized version of the character in order to appeal to the executives at Disney who are telling the writers/producers what they should and shouldn't do.

That moment in the comics where Jameson admits that Spider-Man is a hero and he is jealous of him. That part got me as a kid and made go “wow”. It’s my preferred reasoning for Jonah hating Spider-Man than the retcons they always seem to do in the modern comics

Great video, but small note: Peter left FF in TASM #1 not because FF is non-profit organization, but because someone from FF (most likely Johnny) said that Spider-Man is a wanted by the police menace, which means for Peter that they believe people like Jonah who are biased towards Spider-Man.
No he left cause they didn't pay. Johnny talking smack was after he tried to break in to the baxter building. Reed tries to get Pete to stay but he is so desperate for money he doesn't see that Reed would have helped if he explained better. One of the lessons you g Pete has to learn is to ask for help

This is why I love spectacular spiderman venom arch. Uncle Ben is finally revealed during a moment where Peter is dealing with a moment of self doubt, Ben is a stone in the foundation of peter self reliance not a lingering ghost of his failure.

Ppl hate on MCU Spiderman, because they have nostalgia for Raimi's and Webb's Spidermen and have a kinda hate for Tom's Spiderman bcuz he's in the MCU so there's cameos of different MCU characters and he's an Avenger, just like in the comics, the other Spidermen are in an universe by himself, which is crazy to me how they try to shame the current Spiderman is as comicbook accurate as every other MCU superhero, Marvel comicbooks were always so comical and witty, yet had real stake and grounded yet it's balanced and the right amount of drama. Ppl wanna see themselves in their favorite superhero so if they're jaded and cynical so they want their heroes to be the same. PS4 Spiderman and MCU's iteration are as close to perfect as we will ever get. Hate it or love it, Tom Holland is the best all around live action Spiderman. PS4 Spiderman is the most legit overall and Miles Morales is the best animated version Spiderman or atheist has the best movie, fight me.

I think that panel of Peter/Spidey deciding to save Flash really helps your point on masks and personas. One side is Peter Parker, with the revenge fantasy of the average bullied kid, and the other is Spider-Man being heroic and doing the right thing. The divided face is the prime example of the split persona thing.
Also, it’s pretty funny that guys like Reed Richards and Ben Grimm belong in Peter and Johnny’s generation even though they’re around Jameson’s age.

I guess I fell in love with the Ultimate version. Way better than the original I think. It's really sad it came to an end.
SPOILER: on the Ultimate version, Peter thinks Ben died because of him. So his curse is that he'll never stop trying to help people, doing as his uncle said because he's in agony and feels really guilty about what happened. His last moments on the comics were all about him telling Ben that he couldn't save him, but manage to save her. So he's really always searching for the forgiveness of uncle. This approach is way more dramatic and appealing for me.
