Feb 2008 late afternoon Qld Australia my kids start yelling for me to see something in the sky, not wanting to be bothered I shouted back its a plane, they replied that it was too big, I bolted to the front yard and saw them pointing high in the east, there was a dark hazy mass the size of an out stretched hand, I had no idea what it was but saw it was getting bigger and bigger, I was baffled as it grew in seconds and blanketed half the sky like a shadow, then it clarified into perfect detail, it was an asteroid of impossible size and speed, the angle of the afternoon sunlight fell directly on and illuminated its facing surface and near side cliffs yet it did not shine or reflect, it was Dark and unreflecting like coal dust despite direct sunlight.. the facing cliffs and surface were not formless and it was a chunk of something much larger like a moon, that much was apparent, for a full ten seconds it ghosted Half the sky at incredible speed for something seemingly as big as Australia, bigger even..the best analogy is that of an Ant at a level train crossing watching a soundless freight train go past, speed and size corresponding..The most Fantastic Mind Boggling sight ever witnessed by a Human in All of Time .. there is much more but thats it as brief as I can.. almost as mind boggling was there was no report of it despite it being unmissable by the space agencies, though understandable , panic will not help ... I told this story to DeGrass Tyson a while back and never heard back of course, but a little while after he announced they had detected a blind spot in the asteroid detection array .. I said in 08 that we will soon see a rush for Mars, why mars?, it's as far away as they can get, this thing missed us by a minute, it is on an intersect course and if it hits not even the earth will remain intact such is its size and speed,
@@cuchidesoto2686 my first thought on realising what it was I was seeing was to get the camera, but from its speed i knew if I went for the camera I would miss it, then I realised that this was probably the end of the world and decided just to soak it up and observe, and to this day and every day I kick myself for not sending my kids at least, but it sort of was a brain freeze moment of epic proportions..
Imo Hale Bopp wasn't even close in comparison to 1996 comet Hyakutake. It was truly spectacular. A wonder to behold. As if that was not enough, it just came out of nowhere. Wasn't even expected.
@@garylefevers Never heard any reports for Hyakutake in Western Canada, maybe it wasn't visible. Hale-Bopp was all over the news and ended up visible every night for over a month. I got fabulous pictures. No doubt I would have chased Hyakutake, had I heard of it. Now the media seems to report every comet. Neowise, which was pretty good, then I got Leonard, 'the rare Green comet' C/2022 E3 (ZTF) , and 12p/Pons-Brooks, and of course Tsuchinshan last week. I will be cool if C/2024 S1 turns out great.
@joeshmoe7967, oh that's a pity. It was absolutely incredible. Apparently the person discovering the comet found it using binoculars if I recall correctly at the end of Jan and it was visible via naked eye in a few weeks later. Words do not adequately describe it. One did not struggle to find it. It was definitely noticeable. I recommend that you look it up. Of course pictures are different. I couldn't imagine how it could have been missed but at least you enjoyed Hale-Bopp. That a good one to have witnessed too.
Also mark your calendar for C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) ⭐ Perihelion: January 13, 2025 (mag -2.0) Closest approach to Earth: January 13, 2025 (mag -1.8) Where to observe: Northern Hemisphere (before perihelion), Southern Hemisphere (after perihelion) Visibility forecast: If we’re lucky, Comet C/2024 G3 might become visible to the naked eye, even in the daytime, by January 2025. However, it also might not survive perihelion and, even if it does, will be positioned quite close to the Sun in the sky.
Literally just saw a movie last weekend from 2020 (Greenland) about a fragmented comet that wasn’t supposed to hit Earth but oops! Their calculations were wrong and it was a planet killer. Should we be worried about this one?🤔😬

Nobody will ever see C/2024 S1 ever again. It fell apart in the Sun.
Haley Bopp was the best and most visible one in decades. Incredibly visible with the naked eye.
