Estro Jen Call Out Response

- The following video is a public continuation of a daily conversation that is not over. I am sorry to everyone, namely the Black & BIPOC skating community that I have offended while growing Moxi Roller Skates. You can expect more conversations, awareness and solutions to address the prevalent issues surrounding my “roller skating history” video, accessibility to roller skates and inclusivity in the marketing of Moxi Roller Skates.
Since these conversations were made public, the About page and use of the word “revival” are being changed.
Roller Skating has always been here and prevalent inside the roller rinks by a beautiful Black culture. -Michelle Steilen/Estro Jen
Thank you for your comments. One thing we would like to mention is we are not deleting comments, but some comments have to be approved because TH-cam marks them as spam. We are just now getting to them & will approve every comment. It is important people are allowed to speak their mind and hearts. Thank you.
Thanks for the clarification! I was worried ya'll were doing the planetrollerskate thing
Thanks Estro. I guess you know what happened with Indy Jamma Jones, involving another skater Karen the Karrot. Is just a nonsense of people getting offended for the wrong reasons. She made mistakes (Indy) but I would like to know your input on it, since Indy (is/was? Not sure about the status...) one of the Moxie's girls.
My admiration to you, your career and your legacy to the skate community. Seeing for the first time a video about the Moxie movement and the girls inspired me from 6 approx. years without skating and coming back to my dear skates. I'm even trying to practice with a local Roller Derby team in my country but due COVID 19, practices are suspended.
Skating for me is one of my therapies as a person with chronic psychiatric conditions. You and the Moxie girls fire this flame back in me. Thanks
Will you cut ties with indy jamma jones?
A T Estro cut ties with Indy a few/couple years ago.
Will there ever come panther skates in all the colors of the rainbow?🌈
Those photos were obviously taken out of context. I’m a black woman and the first photo you talked about is definitely something I’ve done with my white friends. I think this attack on you is ridiculous. Sending love.
I agree with this completely!
sweizyteezy never said I spoke for everyone and yes I’ll have my opinion while you have yours. The comment was to her not you.
I totally agree with you. I feel bad she has to even make this video
As a black woman myself I agree
I agree 100% idk if the people attacking her are trolls or what, but who the h*ll is getting offended and triggered over these photos.
I was expecting something truly awful, but all I saw were photos of her having fun with her friends and just being light hearted.
There are MUCH MUCH more serious things to be concerned about rn. She didn’t need to apologize for these, but I appreciate the sentiment.
I can’t say that I’m offended by these things, but I also can’t say how others should feel. In any case, thank you for addressing the harm, urgently and explicitly. I’ve been following your brand for the last few months and I see how you’re trying to put into practice an antiracist brand model, and by the content on your channel you are giving your diverse group of ambassadors a voice, too.
Shout-out to the Non-black and Non-Black POC stating how this isn't their apology to accept. Y'all have no idea how appreciated that is.
Agreed. And I did not state it earlier but for sure! Not mine to accept 🧡💙💜
Of course! We will never know how you all feel and all we can do is support you.
Your right, I want to defend these people and stand by their apologies because I respect them and do believe it to be true. BUT it is not mine to accept. Thank you for the reminder.
Not my place to accept this apology, however, I commend you on how quickly you responded to being called out. It’s a display of strength to openly accept accountability.
Maybe Indy should take notes 😂
tiny kass why? indy herself said she has conservative parents so whatever subconscious prejudices she have wont be solved in a day. even if she did apologize the day of its likely she still views the world from the same glasses. Its better she had taken time to think things through because its impossible to mess up apologize genuinely and change immediately in the same day. These are from awhile ago and indys situation is fresh. Its likely it'll take her a while to change. sometimes apologies that have taken time to come out are more genuine than apologizes that happen immediately after the fact, because who knows if the person is apologizing just to get everyone off their case. We never know. How could indy apologize if she hadnt yet taken the steps to educate herself? and immediate apology would have made things worse imo.
As a black skater, I 1. Don’t find these post particularly offensive but I can’t speak for other black people. 2. I’m glad you responded so quickly....Some people took 5 weeks to respond
And some still haven't... Cough cough indy cough..
I think you missed something because it wasn’t just about photos , it was the way she responded to several people was rude condescending and offensive she was very defensive and didn’t wanna listen here. Especially when it came to the history of roller skating and how huge of an impact the black community had on skating. She responded with “I only speak English I don’t have time to go over the history of rollerskating” what a ridiculous response. Look up @lilyskatesalot on ig . It’s in her highlights. Estrogen went on her live and made a complete full of herself just because you speak one language doesn’t mean you can’t take the time to do research it was a bullshit response . And I am so sick of people saying as a black person they are not offended . stop giving the green light to white people to “say see this black person doesn’t care that means it’s OK” all you’re doing is helping to justify problematic behavior
Alexandra Villalpando Indy responded in a planet roller skate video the other day... I wouldn’t call it an apology, but she “responded”.
She literally said I'm sorry if i hurt anyone's feelings and I apologize if the photo offended you or made you feel bad etc to each photo. She explained each photo individually and apologized individually. I honestly feel like these days many people look for any way to take anything out of context and make it an issue. On the other hand people need to think before speaking /doing. However, when you look at a person like her and the types of things She has posted over many years, you can see that her intentions were not as its been made out to be. 5 pics in 13 years were "called out". On another note, I hate that this type of stuff has to go on anyway. We are all people who deserve love and to be treated with kindness and respect. Its just ridiculous that people have ever been treated cruely due to the color of skin. Who gave anyone the right to decide that any race is superior to another?!! Disgusting!
I think most people who are offended are just whites trying to play the hero. If we look for racism, we'll always find it.
I wish people knew just how involved black skaters are in this skate community, but as usual and like any hobby, they’re underrepresented.
And too frequently, not given credit!!
I've said it once and ill say even as many more times as I can. I've 100% convinced that the black community are the reason roller skating is still alive today, whenever I went to a rink or outside it was always the black community who were skating. The fact that they're not getting the recognition they deserve is ridiculous.
Right like roll bounce isnt the biggest skating movie and its about black ppl. The top US figure roller skater is black. And the capital of roller skating in america is def altlanta lmaoo
@@jjy2207 Speaking of Atlanta, don't forget the movie ATL with TI. They were skaters in that as well. The skating rink was the place to be when I was young and it was mainly back people who were the ones jamming and doing cool tricks.
I miss the 80s when we were all simply PEOPLE.
Thanks 4 apologizing but as a black women I didn’t see anything wrong w/ any of the pics maybe the Afro pic but ur black friend was playing w/ u and the hair helmets like I don’t see the problem but I can see u have a kind heart
Anaya Baker Oh my goodness! I’ve been saying the same thing. I’m black.
As a white girl I wish I had a blonde fro! I think they're so beautiful. But sadly I have stick straight hair. I hope some day we can get to the point that we feel comfortable sharing these things and it is no longer cultural appropriation. Racism can go straight to hell!
I did though. If you wanted a certain disco afro aesthetic at a shoot, maybe hire some women of color who have afros? There are plethora. Some find them offensive, others don't. That's ok. Having an explanation on why helps, I didn't find the butt one offensive after she explained. But out of context, they're pretty shady 🤷🏾♀️
Thank you!
Oh my goodness, i whole-heatedly agree. It just really shows the person she is and how she doesn't want to hurt anyone.
I recently got into roller skating, have been following your videos and a few other pages and seeing this drama unfold has me speechless. Even in the roller skating community this happens?! It’s supposed to be a happy place lol. Jen, you’re a real one for posting this, I was so nervous at the beginning watching, but these conversations are always a little uncomfortable. I feel that your heart is in the right place and you did good with this one. I will continue to be a supporter 👏🏾
Hi Toya, I don't know if this sort of things happen in USA, in Europe at least rolling Comunity is a big family where everybody is accepted and in the roller skating club I lead we've coined a law were you're not one of us if you don't accept we are equals no matter, race, credo or sexuality, in fact I'm a member of the LGTB. ✌❤⛸🛹
The problem is estrogen is leaving out something real major that sparks all of this. I’m going to copy and paste my response to her. I don’t think it’s going to matter to you either way but maybe you should see what actually happened and why it went down the way it did it has nothing to do with pictures.. Long copy and paste👇🏾
I watch this entire video and waited for you to address what happened on IG live.So basically what you’re saying is you’re not gonna address what happened on Instagram between you and a black roller skater by the name of @LilySkatesAlot I watched that live interaction and you were upset and defensive and dismissive when she asked you why you decided to leave out and not speak about black history of rollerskating when you claim inclusiveness.... Your response was awful...so you’re not going to address your delete video on the “history of rollerskating “and you’re not going to address how do you mentioned how you said “you only speak English “so you don’t have time to research the entire history of rollerskating and that includes the impact Black people had on rollerskating. Got it.So you need to be real with your TH-cam community and give them the whole story of why you are sitting here making this bullshit statement and only addressing old photos that no one really cares about you are deliberately leaving out the real issue.
vieuphoria1008 Oh lord. Ok this definitely makes more sense because I was watching the video like, wow this “community” is really going in on her over these old photos?? I don’t even know what to say. I just want to skate, I don’t understand why all these grown ppl can’t just practice what you preach in regards to respect & spreading love and keep it moving. I was on the fence about ordering a pair of moxis now I’m like yooo...I don’t know know at this point. Drama is everywhere.
K-ROLLER GIRL Hi Girl 👋🏾 I’m in Canada..America is literally a movie these days 🍿 I suppose at the end of the day we should all keep our circles close and the vibes good even in this rollerskater world because there are ppl who are ready to drain you no matter where you are 🌎
toya coco yeah it’s really unfortunate she didn’t address the real issue. In fact she avoided it all together and made it about pictures that no one was coming for her about the pics were at least a very minimal situation compared to her statements and aggression towards @LilySkatesAlot on the ig live . And for me I just can’t support her anymore the way I did especially after hearing this apology. you should check it the live it’s on Lily’s highlights and make that judgment for yourself. I was just super disappointed in estrogen. I found it really racist when she pulled the “I only speak English I I don’t have time to look up the history of rollerskating” when being questioned about her role in being non-inclusive .That was so devastating to hear her say that it was a horrible response and a complete dismissal of Lillys feelings and massive micro aggression racism . There are plenty of other shops to get skates from. Estrogen was part of the reason why I wanted to get back into skating two years ago along with other amazing skaters . she’s not my only inspiration but because she had the biggest platform of course she’s the first visible person/woman you see it’s easy to think Moxie’s are the skates to get because they’re super trendy. Up until all her BLMpost her brand has been very white washed and not very inclusive. I overlooked all of that but the way she treated a black skater on IG live settled it for me. I’m done with her. And this apology is crazy because if you look it up and do a little research no one was really talking about these pictures I feel like these are her scapegoat to get away from what really went down. Edit: writing a whole essay is here 😉
Indy and Pigeon could really take notes. This is how to respond. As a woman of color, thank you for taking responsibility and apologizing quickly. I may consider your product in the future now 💚
I thought the same thing 👏🏾
I always avoided moxi because the branding isn't my style. But as I started listening to Michelle speak about her passion and goals for the skating community, and seeing her ingenuity and professionalism as of late, I realised that they are a company worth supporting and finally bought my jacks!
But pigeon did nothing wrong?. She fired Indy.
Boss Cat oh shit she did?
I’m not trying to be rude or anything but did pigeon do anything?
As a woman of color and as a skater absolutley none of these pictures are personally offensive you're just having fun everyone is so dam touchy about any little thing it's sickening I apologize you even had to make this video
Estro. As a black roller skater, I appreciate this video. Your apology on this issue is sincere and heartfelt (keep reading). I appreciate the timeliness of video as well. Personally I feel the longer the silence, the guiltier a person is. At first glance honestly the first photo captioned, "should I get braids?" honestly did not offend me, as well as the photo with the blond afro. However, the third and last photo I was a bit concerned on and i could see where people would get offended by. I appreciate you coming forward, taking accountability, and addressing this because based on the videos and livestreams that you make on TH-cam, I know you are a good person with good intentions. You are a bright person so I wanted to stay open minded and give you a chance to explain yourself. And you did, photo college wise.
On a second note, however, I feel like addressing the livestream with Lily is neccessary because you came off as almost arrogant and disdainful with it came to the skating history regarding the black community. So I stay open minded and I await your statement on this other issue.
Overall, to all the people who may see this, I believe that Estro Jen is not an enemy, but an ally to the cause of anti-racism and BLM. She is human. She is taking accountability. She is learning. She is having a conversation. And I support✊🏾🖤.
Eloquently put. I agree the issues with Banzai and Lily seem more important to me than those posts.
as the video was ending i just knew it wouldnt be brought up. i try not to place expectations onto people because thats not fair to their own growth and makes it harder for a person to grow naturally or genuinely. i hope you see this estro and also sometime soon take the time to understand why people and Lily were upset, and ultimately decide to address that as well.
The black community is being gaslighted by Conchitaqween and Banzai!!! They have personal and professional beef with MOXI's owner and are highjacking the BLM movement to bait the black community so they can complain about their issues.
I was waiting for her to address Lily and because she didn’t I feel like her apology is bullshit and half hearted. You can’t address pictures that no one really cares about and not really get into the reason why she’s in this position. She’s here because of how disgustingly arrogant she came off especially when I quote she says ,” she only speaks English and doesn’t have time to address and talk about the whole history of rollerskating “and that includes black history in rollerskating.... what kind of response is that. She’s not here to change she’s here to gain sympathy and downplay the entire situation. As a black skater I do not accept her apology she’s full of shit. And she’s not inclusive whatsoever her whole brand is white washed.
😂
I see some folks (who identify like me aka BLACK) say they don't see anything wrong with the photos posted (even though someone clearly did) and I just wanna say that EITHER WAY we appreciate you speaking out/up and taking accountability for your actions. This is one of the more genuine talks I've seen, thank you for continuing to have this dialogue.
The individuals that put this collage together are't black. These are angry ex employees that are using the BLM movement to smut on MOXI and its owner. A lot like counter-activism in the recents protest. They're using the BLM to mute MOXI due to their own professional and personal issues they have with MOXI's owner. If you knew the half, trust me this is not our fight!!!
Melanin Learner the photos aren’t the problem is the way she treated black skaters profited off of them and when they spoke out she gave a bullshit response and harassed and gaslighted them
@@yunishinoya4773 sounds like the music industry during the rock and roll era.
i do respect how quickly you responded, giving a warning in the beginning of the video, informing the viewer of what ur being called out for, apologizing off the bat especially to the black/poc skating community, acknowledging you have hurt people & made changes to the About Me on the moxi site. this makes indys apology video look bad (because it was)
I don’t see what you needed to apologize for sis...this is just people looking for a reason to cancel people 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
again. no one is trying to cancel her. everyone has the intentions of helping her be better so that she *wont* have to be canceled one day. she said it herself she had been called out and came on the defensive and stated that she now knows that holding yourself accountable is better for growth than ignoring your peers feelings. I also personally believe people are too sensitive but who am i to tell them that the way they feel is wrong? even if i dont get it its a number of real life people who do and i cant change that, just because i myself dont get it. Especially since estro is trying to be super inclusive and has a large platform. People are bound to mess up but its what they do with the mess ups (whether i personally think its a mess up or not) that matter. Nobody said they wanted to cancel her, they said she they wanted her to do better.
Did you watch the video? The photos aren’t exactly offensive. Which one offended you?
Yep just this morning I had this talk with a person trying to cancel this brand..
Some people live to destroy innocence. That's exactly what I see when people raise a huge, victim-mindset fuss about fun photos of friends goofing off together. If any of these photos really hurt or offended anyone, I'm sorry but maybe their skin needs to grow a little thicker because all of humanity is offensive af and these things happen so they need to just wear their big girl panties... Or MAYBE they're a bully who gets off on gaslighting and torturing kind souls like the people of Moxi.
The most effective bullies I have ever met are covert narcissists who specialize in gaslighting. They get off on making good people feel guilty for stuff that damages no one, and they set themselves up to be a holy untouchable object of worship in the process. It's disgusting.
And in this racial context, it increases racial tensions rather than helping ease them. Counter-productive. A certain 3-letter abbreviation should consider some less inflammatory strategies if they REALLY want anti-POC racism to disappear, but that isn't their goal in the slightest.
@@saoirse_flies YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY!!! I am so sick to see that Jen was called out for these absolutely ABSURD pics that supposed POC were "offended" by. (Even though I don't believe they were truly offended. Like you said--they enjoy torturing good people)
I really love her videos and she's a wonderful soul. But I REALLY REALLY wish she hasn't apologized for these. I realize she didn't want her business to get cancelled (we know they love to do that) but her acknowledging these nutcases and saying sorry for having innocent fun with friends just enables the bullies to continue with their ridiculousness.
As one of the people who've been speaking out, I want to say a few things:
1) Address Your History of Roller Skating Video, Lily's criticisms, and your dismissiveness towards them when called in: You've been in this business for years, personally profited off of Black skate moves, and have Black employees but did not mention the Black history and cultural influence on skating at all in your history of Roller Skating video. The excuse of information not being available in English is not acceptable when the majority of Black skaters calling you out and the majority of this information is in English. If you can learn our moves for profit, you can learn and respect the history/culture.
2) Address the colorism Moxi has engaged in: Black skaters and other BIPOC skaters have repeatedly called out how your brand has little to no representation of dark skin and brown skin Black and BIPOC skaters in social media. This is inherently colorist, made worse by the fact that your brand has and continues to contribute to a whitewashed narrative of skating. While I appreciate the skaters of color you have currently, light skin and white passing skaters cannot represent all of us nor our needs.
3) Stop reinforcing a whitewashed and segregated form of skate culture: Current critique goes beyond the low hanging fruit that are these images. You have deliberately participated in whitewashing skate culture, centering a white narrative in skate culture, and only allowing BIPOC on your team who agree with or align with that narrative and it is directly harmful to Black skaters. You did not revitalize skate culture, you stripped it of its Blackness during a time of extreme prejudice and sold it to white women and white non-men as a lifestyle, complete without Black people. You centered yourself and your perspective at every chance and, when there was a chance your brand could be threatened by your racist actions, you choose the lightest or near whitest BIPOC to act as your shields from accusations towards a concerning trend of harmful racist behavior. That is racist and you need to examine, apologize, and correct that behavior.
4) Engage with those who are criticizing Moxi honestly without trying to silence, discredit, or gaslight us: xoxoBanzai and other previous Moxi affiliates have spoken out about their experiences of bullying, abuse, racism, and exploitation they endured while working for you just to be harrassed, stalked, and discredited as recently as today on one of your employee's livestreams. I've seen entire Facebook groups deleted due to fears of potential legal action from your brand for discussing your pattern of racism. I've seen Facebook posts reported and gone for speaking about racism Moxi, and primarily you, have engaged in. Lilyskatesalot and Nena on Instagram were personally confronted by you in dismissive and frankly uncomfortable ways. I've even been personally gaslit by two of your affiliates in the past for speaking up about your racism and racism the Moxi brand has engaged in. Rather than give us an apology for what is truly low hanging fruit, apologize for the ways you have silenced us on multiple platforms. I'm practically a random newbie and have dealt with being silenced by your Employees, this is an issue far larger than some images from 5 years ago. Engage with that instead of hiding and minimizing that.
5) Stop deleting or hiding comments: we see this behavior and it is not how an ally behaves.
Do better and prove to people that they are not wasting their time hoping for more.
It happened to me on youtube. I see it wasnt isolated. And I used to be a customer
Can I repost this?
@@yunishinoya4773 of course!
I'm glad she didn't delete this comment....
Yeah, the apology starts to seem less complete when you see all the comments in here asking her to address some actual stuff that is deeply offensive. The pics aren’t great but they are minimally offensive compared to other things that actually seem blatantly racist. It’s a good start, but it’s clear that more needs to be apologized for, it can’t end here.
I am a black woman and you are my sister and I thank you for your heart felt apology.
I’m black and all the photos you showed does not make me feel offended at all. You were having fun. You did nothing wrong. Black women wear other cultures hair all the time so why can’t white people imitate ours. Whoever called you out on those pictures are too sensitive. Please don’t beat yourself up over this.
Agree 💯 some people are too sensitive.
♥️♥️♥️
This comment was incredibly ignorant and that the fact that you as a Black woman feel like that was a necessary comment is disgusting.
@@anais8455 you don't get to decide what Black people can and cannot be offended about.
As a woman of color, I’m Hispanic, I’m so glad to see you’re understanding in just “having fun”! Everyone is so offended so fast these days. It’s getting old. There is a difference between being racist and just having fun. 🙄

Right! I love Estro and always have ❤️😊
rocachick860 she’s so damn inspirational!! My wrist is broken due to skating so I’m living through her! 💜
I was raised in San Jose California in the 60's our neighbors were diverse & everyone got along, now 40 years later it appears everyone is getting it wrong. As a kid I would watch both American Bandstand & Soul Train and I loved the difference. What's up is the beauty of being different. Apologizing for being a race won't fix anything it just brings shame and resentment. I love all my friends that are not my race for being who they are...I love their heart, their humour, their style. Of course there are people I don't like as much, not because of their race, but because they are haters, jerks, or abusers..that's any race. Name calling and making assumptions is really getting us nowhere.
Love more, judge less. I've been praying for a native American Indian for president for years!
@@janaeradford3491 well said, wish there were more people with your sentiments.
As a parent, I want to tell you that when my kids suffer pains in the skate park, we come back home and watch your videos as an example of endurance, resilience and courage. Thanks for that.
As a Hispanic woman this is not my apology to accept but I thank you for coming out with this statement. You seem legitimately sorry and I’m sure (and hope) you’ll continue to educate yourself and make strides to turn this around 💗
Love, Bry yessss 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Hey sorry I want to clarify that I never worked with Moxi before but xoxobanzai has. Sorry if my responses came across that way!
And there you have it🤞🏿💪🏿
It's totally not up to me to say "you are forgiven" but ESTRO JEN, YOU ARE A LIGHT! PLEASE never forget that. When this video started I actually was really horrified that I might see something that could change how I think of you. But honestly, this just enforces how kind of a soul you have. The fact that you have this sensitivity for everyone's feelings, even all of our big butts
I thought the same thing. I thought it was going to be something that would be so disappointing I got a knot in my stomach
Hey Jen! Thank you for responding so quickly. That speaks to your character. As a Black woman, I also am learning every day of the many intersectional perspectives that I have privilege over. The microaggressions that I am still uncovering in my past, present, moving forward for the future.
Could you speak on that call out video's statement about the history of skating? I'm calling in here
I think it's important people don't just focus on the photos, but the whitewashing of skate history.
I am excited for you and the community because you have taken a stance of change. I hope that the skate community will continue to grow together, having willingness to hear other people's perspectives without getting defensive or throwing blame.
Hair is a tricky topic in my perspective. The history behind black hair goes deep. There was a time when it was illegal for Black woman to show their natural hair. Then the systematic oppression diminishing Black women's self esteem of their hair. "You're hair is nappy" "straighten your hair and you'll get a job". It's different than cultural appropriation because a lot of oppressed people are told to ASSIMILATE to the norm. Look at Apartheid. Look at yourself, within your family history did you have to change your name or forget your language in order to assimilate in society? It's stuff like that. I'm going to share a few links below about hair and skate history if anyone is interested.
Wow. I had no idea about the hair history!
Respectfully, i got more out of this than just the hair thing, but... i can remember working with a girlfriend of mine and she came in with new braids and I (ignorantly) went up to her and touched it commenting on how pretty it was! SORRY LADIES OF COLOR!! I KNOW BETTER NOW! 💜💙🧡
luckily Beneicia and I go back so she gently let me know that damn, I am lucky it's me because you do NOT touch a black woman's hair. Lesson learned. Love given. Respectful exchange. 🧡💙💜
So grateful for that convo 😊
Thank you so much for adding links that you like for these topics! Both of these are exactly what I wanted to start learning more about. I hope I don't say anything offensive out of ignorance but I'd love to share why I'm excited to learn more about these things.
1. I use to have a blonde afro and I loved it! Not too long ago I thought to myself "man! I wish I still had that wig!!" I genuinely admire when black women wear their hair naturally and I absolutely love what you can do with braids, color, accessories, ect.
I can go on about that but I'll move on💙🤎
2. As an artist myself I appreciate, admire, support, and just feel for it when people express themselves without reservation. That expression could be due to pure joy, love, anger, confusion, sadness, pain, ECT. And a lot of what we have now, that we don't even give credit to is due to black people expressing themselves through times of those INTENSE emotions they had the RIGHT to have! So skating has saved my life, I found drive and joy back in my life due to it and I am so excited (as hard as it may be) to learn the history behind it when it's been created by those expressing and working through those hard times.
I don't know the right way to say all of that and I hope it makes sense 😊 so off I go to read your links 😉 thanks again 🤜🏾🤛 BLM
As a black person, I do notice when certain people treat textured hair with humor. It doesn’t always indicate malice or that someone has a strong bias against me but it does often signal to me that they may not be the most considerate of my feelings. The first picture is definitely a relatable bonding moment to me but Afro wigs have been used to mock us by others in the past so it means a lot to me that you addressed them and all of these photos. It makes me feel like I have a space to learn and grow where people will listen if I say I’m uncomfortable. You are making this space different and better for everyone. Thank you for sharing your feelings and being a wonderful example of change and compassion.
I can't for the life of me understand why this apology video was made in the first place. Seems like no big deal? I swear some people are either just out for a power trip or attention 'calling out' people unecessarily - they should just be ignored. Too toxic
I'm still wondering... These girl should just go skate
Im glad you did this ♥️ pls don’t cry.. at least you had the heart to acknowledge it .. we love you Estro #ChangeIsGreat
On the flip...CRY IT OUT GIRL! I cry allllll the tiiiiiiime!!! Happy, sad, confused, overwhelmed, hungry, realllllly good commercials ....😉🌈😉
I'm seeing a lot of comments calling people too sensitive. STOP. It's not your place to tell Black people what they can and cannot be sensitive about.
Thank you. I appreciate seeing your words.
With all m due respect as a Guatemalan & Mexican and I speak up for my young daughter who is also black and Japanese, it is not your place to tell other marginalized cultures who also face racism that the apology is not for them or that they cannot be feeling and experiencing issues similar to the black community. That exclusion is harmful to BLM movement and changing racism as a whole.
360 Revolucion
Read the comment again sis. If you’re not Black you need to make sure your bottom and top lip are well acquainted.
@@360revolucion8 I don't know if you're talking about another comment OP said, but I think it's about context. In Jen's video she is apologizing for situations that are specific to the Black community. I also see BLM as a movement fighting for the lives of POC. But, and I can't believe I'm referencing Get Out the movie right now, we have to understand that within each culture are differing variations of privilege. If you have seen the movie, remember during the auction scene there was an Asian guy that asked how the Black American experience was. There's a lot of discussion on this and ways people have to assimilate to dominant narratives at play. Colorism, sexism, racism... so many intersections.
360 Revolucion oh hell no. Don’t make us latix’s look bad. If you aren’t black you have no say in the matter. Don’t parade your daughter around for points either. She is black and she can decide. You cant
I’m totally confused as to why these pictures would offend anyone, I mean really what have we become!?
I didn't know she was such a leftist. What a whole bunch of bs
I'm with you on this, I'm watching these drama videos wondering wtf... Go so what you do well... Go skate girls.
Humans suck sometimes and I’m sorry you had to make this video. People take things too far. I’m mixed and have been thumbed down by black and white humans and tbh I never took that out on everyone. I think I will make a video with people who have been bullied too for not being a certain race. Power my ass. It’s people being jerks just cause they can tbh Im sick of it. Moxi I’m still going to buy skates from you.
One Love ✌🏼
❤️❤️
Love you Estro. never felt wronged by you. your my motivation for skating when i feel scared f falling
It's so funny that in Estro's channel you're all throwing flowers, but in Karen's (Karen the Karrot) channel, people were talking about Pigeon, Estro and of course, hunting Indy with pitchforks and torches... Get real people. I've always admired this 3 gals since I started getting into the roller skating community, doing my research before buying my first skates and this ladies inspired me. But to one, you're showing respect and to the others you're eating them alive?
People never gets satisfied. And I'm Latina, tons of latinos are offended by this due being biracial or POC in USA. I might not look like, but I've faced racism and mistreatment for being "too white" to be latina. Go figure...
Be gentle, someday you might need this for you.
I'm feeling this right now. I have a similar life experience. I'm really struggling because I want to stand for social justice and fight racism and discuss unconsious bias for change but I cant get behind people being hateful and attacking others and in many cases slandering them...
Well.. there is a big difference between how Jen and Indy handled things... Pigeon has fired Indy and no longer associates with her, as well as others in the skating community.
@@Texas-girll yeap, agree with you. For example Karen the Karrot handled things in a way I'm not agreeing and as a Latina sends the wrong message to other cultures about how Latinas are, and it ashamed me. Even if I agree with the fact she was given for less. I don't like what happened to her. I don't like people who offend people and I hate people who get offended for trend reasons, not because they want to support their human brother/sister. I hate how Indy's being eating alive, and I cannot imagine Pigeon's emotions, and the store staff. Also the skaters that felt let down as peers of Indy.
But I do believe people has the chance to heal what they caused (with or without intensions, because good will doesn't matter when you hurt someone), heal and forgive themselves and come back clean.
We all can. Pride and resentment doesn't allow us to open up our minds and heart.
To preface, I’m a woman of color. Your actions today speak volumes about your growth Estro Jen. Lol I personally thought the instagram photos were humorous... shame on me( maybe I’m ignorant or insensitive? Possibly 🤷🏽♀️) Anyways your forgiven in my eyes. You’ve helped be an ally too this movement witch is undeniable. Your still a roll model too me, thank you for speaking out on this ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
I feel the same way. I thought they were fun pictures. I’m black
I like the play on words with “Roll Model!” 😊👍🏼
I can honestly say I’ve never seen anyone handle something like this so genuinely, and with such grace. I can’t forgive her for anyone else, but I do believe that she meant no harm, and truly cares about making amends. Estro has always seemed to me like she wanted to put nothing but positive energy into the world, and we could all use a little more of that.
I don't see them offensive either.
Just image if white people start complaining about cultural appropriation of black ladies wearing wigs to cover their afro hair.
It's a personal choice, but I believe afro is beautiful.
@@anais8455 are you for real with this statement. Wearing wigs is for protective styling and using added hair for protect styling goes back to African culture which predates European civilization. I can send you a video on the subject matter which explains the history if you would like.
The 56 people who disliked this video, why? How does that help anyone. I’m a woman of color and I really appreciate and have much love for what Jen has done. Taking accountability and starting conversations is where it begins, I personally wasn’t offended by the photos but I can see how some would be. I still support your brand and when I can afford them I will have a pair of my own moxi Lolly’s or jack’s. Keep being you Jen, you have a big heart and it shines through in your videos.
Your personal offense has nothing to do with it.
Got it.So you need to be real with your TH-cam community and give them the whole story of why you are sitting here making this bullshit statement and only addressing old photos that no one really cares about you are deliberately leaving out the real issue.
vieuphoria1008 do you one of those people who goes down on others profiles hit to make them feel bad, this is apology is harm without intentions and the thing with lily is non of your business some things are better discussed in private. Accept or don’t accept this is one of the most genuine and honest apology video I’ve seen on TH-cam.
@@vieuphoria1008 sounds like you know way more about this than I do. I admit I'm a little late to the party on this one .wish you could hip me to what you know about this.
Honestly I think bots controlled by Facebook go around disliking every TH-cam video, some more then others depending on what the tech Giants are fighting over at the time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
[This is not a hateful comment] as a PoC (not black) I appreciate this. Now remember apologizing doesn't make you a hero and it's up to the black community to forgive you. I see you're working on your biases and that's great. I just got the moxi pads and I don't regret it and I would support you more because your company is run by women and you have people like Shove in there. Also I wish you were more animal friendly and size friendly. I wish you the best for your journey
As a black poc, i forgive. And a lot of black skates do too
If you knew that these are angry non-black ex employees that are gaslighting the black community to mute Estro and her brand.
I personally am not interested in these photos. please respond to the allegations made by Banzai. I always looked up to you for your hard work and developing Moxi. Did you use her skills and experience and not compensate her? you need to address this. It is not okay to market yourself as a self made woman and then not acknowledge the work than woman of color have done. This is how systemic racism thrives. BIPOC deserve recognition for the work they do. Pay and recognition.
Can you please post a link to this? It please tell me what happened because I can’t find anything about this anywhere and it’s important that it’s talked about.
@@tinykass instagram.com/xoxobanzai/
it's a highlighted story on her instagram. I want an explanation and open conversation about this.
Banzai is highjacking the BLM movement to complain about MOXI and the owner.
Banzai was working for free because she wanted to 🙈
Exactly. These photos were never the true issue estrogen is using these photos that no one really cares about as her scapegoat to (no pun intended) skate around the real issues. Like how she completely disrespected @LilySkatesalot On her ig live. This apology is such a bull. I am so disappointed that estrogen is not addressing the real issues and has her entire TH-cam audience completely fooled I’m sickened.
You don't have what to apologize for.... this is non sense... jesus christ. You're a really nice person. Don't beat yourself up.
PSA WHITE PPL: STOP getting in these comments with “it’s not my apology to accept but” NO. No no no no. It’s not your apology to accept, so stop right there. No ifs ands or buts. That’s it. Y’all are tiring with that. Y’all never know when it’s time to shut up 🤦🏾♀️
As a black man and a follower of yours, my heart breaks for you. This is 2020 and those photos are 7 years old. You areca different person now. I would hope we all are different people now. Again, my heart breaks for you and I pray you find peace on the other side of this issue....this too shall pass.
Learning about these things in yourself is clearly emotional as I am sure it is for many white people who are newly awakening to the realities of the world and the impact of their actions regardless of their intention. I want to acknowledge that it takes a lot to come onto a public platform to address this issue and be in your vulnerability in front of us all. Thanks for doing the work. I would recommend. Not bringing the photos back and just keeping them as a personal reminder as it is still triggering content for some, of course that’s up to you and a decision you can make for yourself. Thanks for stepping up to do this work in yourself, it’s a huge way to set an example for others who need to do it as well.
I like what you say about "the impact of actions regardless of intentions".... well said. 💜
For those of you asking:
it was my photos from a Discover LA shoot I did that she stole and used as Instagram ads with links to sell Moxi Lolly Poppy skates on her website. She didn’t “repost them to congratulate” me. She didn’t ask for permission , pay me, acknowledge it was me, congratulate me, or even tag me in the Advertisement. She used them to make money. She only took it down because I called her and told her she could get sued by Warner Brothers (who own the ad rights for those images, and not to mention PAID ME) for the images. She is making it seem like it’s a simple post on ig when it’s bigger than that. This is a common pattern with her. I can only speak for my experiences but She’s done this a lot, to many people in many different ways. She knows exactly what she did.
is there more info on this somewhere? Or do you have ig
Alexis Mendizabal she does @conchitaqween
A lot of women of color are commenting that they weren’t offended by the pictures and she was just having fun in those pics and that she shouldn’t apologize etc. I understand your position. HOWEVER, you have to understand that our hair has been mocked for centuries....so much so that the very character that is known to be goofy, wacky, the butt of all jokes and to be laughed AT....the clown, wears a wig that represents the texture and style of our hair.....because apparently it’s “funny”. Our hair has been deemed unkept, ugly, aggressive, looks like sheep’s wool, not mainstream beautiful because it’s frizzy and big and not long, silky and smooth. It’s been demonized so bad that women of color perm and straighten their hair. Our race has been made a mockery of for so many years....So yes it can be seen as a problem when someone takes that mockery and takes a few “fun” pics of it. I absolutely do not believe Estrogen is racist AT ALL and I support Moxi skates 100%. But unfortunately, situations like this, though minor to some, can keep the harmful stereotypes and bias cycle moving forward. She definitely should of been called out and I applaud the individuals that did because if she’s not aware of her biases, she doesn’t have the opportunity and space to learn, grow and change. Much love, Estrogen❤️🙏🏾
I appreciate this comment. Black hair is a heated topic. We were told to cover our hair because it made us too attractive, then we were taught to hate our hair, straighten our hair to make it look "professional".

While some people are okay with some of the pictures, those that are offended have a right to those feelings especially if Jen is saying the wigs were used for a 70s themed photoshoot, but their not sharing the history related. The 70s were difficult times.
I totally hear you. And really am hearing now, through this thread, about the history of black people's hair and the putting down of it. admittedly, I didn't think about it,, because i think it's beautiful! Natural, afro, braids, twists, etc. And didn't give it a second thought. Unfortunately saying something like that can sound racist when it is really just my truth from my experiences.
There was a post about awakening to the impact of actions regardless of intentions. I appreciate that EstroJen addressed the photos brought forth. It just bums me out that it seemed more like an attack... luckily our girl took it with stride and didn't shy away. Instead, this started us all on this forward thinking forward moving conversation. Estro came forth because she is awesome like us 💜💙🧡

This is ridiculous. Seriously. You don’t need to apologize. Don’t let anyone attack you like that. It’s insane where people focus their energy on.

This is exactly how you handle this kind of thing. Thank you for your swift and heartfelt response to people's concerns. This is not my apology to accept, nor is it my place to dictate how people respond to either the photos or your response. As a new skater, it's good to see that the leaders and influencers of the skating community are being held accountable for their actions.
I've been in your position. I know how hard it is to confront your young and dumb actions and implicit biases. I imagine it's so much harder to navigate while being in the public eye. But I'm proud of you for doing the work and acknowledging the harm those actions may have caused.

@@tonebias3911 woah, they're deleting comments?? What's getting deleted? What are people saying?
Alyssa Sandore we came up with Hairmets as a joke when we were figuring out outfits for San Pedro Shred. It did not have a disco theme, it was just us going with the truck and setting up at the starting line, which is how we started to be featured in stuff.
We were not being hired yet for anything.
They were wigs from estros collection she already had, we had already done another event called the Downhill disco, for sector nine in SD... there is where the afros were a part of the costume... I felt weird about it, yet was told I was not fun if I didn’t do it, or I was being up tight. (Given it was my fault for not saying why I was uncomfortable, and I take fully accountability for that and have apologized on my insta for participating and being complicit)
So the afros were always around...
ALSO, as a side note, when we first got booked there were not casting directors, and I handled most of it when we did. And I NEVER WAS TOLD we had to wear afros... only themes to be interpreted by us.
Maybe the casting director told her after I left three years ago. But these photos are not from that!
While I, a black woman who does not speak for all black women, was not personally was not offended by the images, I know and understand that many people were. I am so grateful for your quick and genuine response Estro. It speaks volumes about who you are and how far you've come to empower all women in the community we love. Thank you
Jen I have so much respect for you coming out and apologizing like this! Your apology seems so sweet and genuine! The first few pictures were cute and funny! And I do believe that you meant no real harm in wearing the Afro, I think it was a genuine mistake and wasn’t meant to make fun of anyone! I’m glad you finally spoke out on the topic of the racism and micro aggression going on and I believe with your influence you could be a lot of help in supporting the black community! It’s been pretty hard for me and every other black girl (or guy) the last couple of weeks. Pretty emotionally draining. But I’m glad to see that a large influencer in rollerskating (which I love) is taking accountability and acknowledging the black community and how actions you have taken could make us feel. Thank you!
FYI, white people, this is not our apology to accept. and you also don’t get to tell BIPOC how to respond or react to a situation. it’s not our job. our job is to listen to BIPOC and uplift their voices, not talk over them.
You’re an amazing leader and i appreciate your apology and I appreciate the honesty, I’ve always known that you were super real and to me I see you in the Black and Hispanic communities always cheering and always always supporting. I see the love you have and it’s inspirational
I'm a white European so by no means my call on whether the apology was needed or whether it is accepted, but I'm glad to see you being genuine and open to reflecting and growing. After watching your video and having seen what Moxi as a brand stands for and whos voices it chooses to elevate, I'll definitely keep supporting the brand.

Estro Jen you really don't need to apologize for something you didn't do wrong. You are not harming others! People need to stop being so sensitive...silly stuff really. THIS DOES NOT SHOW RACISM . RACISM IS A HORRIBLE THING. If anything we should stop seeing each other as a different ethnicity and see each other as just ONE RACE. God Bless you all.

Idk why ppl were offended about those pictures. I understand the one with the afro and the wig but the others are fine. I accept the apology tho.
I hope you don’t feel guilty for your past though. Thank you for your humility and responsibility.
i love you queen!! we all have a ton of work to do on ourselves and thank you for making this video because it makes us feel that we are not alone in our own battles. you have a beautiful heart and we all make mistakes and what matters is you overcoming those and changing with actions- which we see! we are all growing and that doesn't mean it is going to be perfect or without unintentional harm. your heart is gold, Estro. it is an emotional time and you're vulnerable right now and I just want you to know that we love you. it matters that we address the issues that we didn't see before and it shows that we are forever changing and learning!
"Whether intended or not, when a white woman cries over some aspect of racism, all the attention immediately goes to her, demanding time, energy, and attention from everyone in the room when they should be focused on ameliorating racism. While she is given attention, the people of color are yet again abandoned and/or blamed" (134).
"Tears that are driven by white guilt are self-indulgent. When we are mired in guilt, we are narcissistic and ineffective; guilt functions as an excuse for inaction. Further, because we so seldom have authentic and sustained cross-relationships, our tears do not feel like solidarity to people of color we have not previously supported" (135).
I think it's critical for those seeking education on racism, implicit bias, prejudice, etc., to not look to the marginalized for teaching. Please do not ask black women to educate you. We are tired. I'm not saying that conversations shouldn't happen, because they should.
And please keep in mind that when white people conduct themselves in racially insensitive ways or engage in blatantly racist actions, it's not up to other white people to forgive them when they invariably apologize. It's up to white people to hold them accountable, and to spend time educating them so that they may do better in the future.
I understand what you are saying. However, you can’t control tears ! Yes cry, I don’t feel bad if you cry. It shows you are human and you know you did something wrong. Crying is a good thing. It’s the other people that don’t need to go running to the crying white person. I don’t.
To clarify, I’m specifically speaking when the person seems genuinely sorry, like estro Jen in this video. And Not one of those “Karens” that are out there.
I couldn't say it any better. Good job.

It’s unfortunate for all of this to be happening right now. I’m a mixed/biracial woman and I wasn’t offended by the posts. I think people are grabbing for straws and I am sorry that some overly-sensitive people decided to conduct a witch-hunt. I will continue to be a fan!
I'm not going to thank you for this apology, because its not mine, however I do want to know if you'll be removing/editing the history of roller skating video. I think that is a huge portion of this mess that we haven't seen a ton about from you.
Im a new skater who was inspired to get beach bunnies by you and Indy. All of this has burst my bubble so hard. This kind of thing seems to happen every time I get so excited. But I dont have to let it dim the light that skating has been for me. I told myself that and I've been trying to start my own community. Never thought I'd see an apology. Thank you for this. I can see the issue for sure and I hope anyone offended gets a better feel for you and forgive you for not knowing and learning.
I don’t se why your apologizing.. I don’t think the photos should have hurt anyone and I don’t think people should go Back years and years just to hurt someone
Exactly...
I cannot speak to how the mentioned pictures have made others feel, and not to dismiss those that are offended feelings, but... this is ridiculous. There is an obvious line between just having fun and engaging in racist behavior. As a black woman that has taken offense with a lot (A LOT!) of on and offline material lately, these pics just miss the mark for me.
I truly respect that you are aware of how the pictures may be perceived by some and have stepped up immediately to address it and offer a sincere apology. Kudos to you, Jen.
The problem is estrogen is leaving out something real major that sparks all of this. I’m going to copy and paste my response to her. you should see what actually happened and why it went down the way it did it has nothing to do with pictures..
This apology is a great start, but it is just a start. You have much more than some clueless pictures to address, and I hope you get around to addressing it all. Doing the work is hard, it hurts, but I believe in your strength -- keep on doing it, and talk about some of the more substantive race issues your company has gotten into. Please keep pushing, Estro! You seem like a well meaning person, and we don't want to feel disappointed in you!
I wouldn’t apologize for anything! If you want to wear wigs then wear them. You have every right to. You can’t please everyone. People know who you are if they watch your videos. You have done absolutely nothing wrong!!!
Estrogen you are an amazing person. I don’t think you needed to apologize for anything. You had no intention to hurt anyone for your past posts.
I am so annoyed and tired of this movement being used to called out white people for silly things. I understand there are important issues going on in the movement but this is just too silly. It’s so hateful and redundant. People are always going to find problems and it seems now they are just searching for something to be mad about. Come on people. Y’all throw around the racist card so carelessly.
Thank you!!!!!
Agreed! This is ridiculous.
I can’t help but wonder about the person searching through these photos & thinking “they obviously aren’t familiar with Michelle, or Moxi, or they’d know better.” I think it says more about the kind of people LOOKING for reasons to call someone out, than the people in the photos.
Dizzy Dubbs oh my goodness, yes. It says more about the accusers.
Yes!!! Is it some kind of brainwashing or what?? For the first time I am doubting myself whether I am fighting on the right side, this hysteria is overwhelming and seriously worrying me...
Love you Estrojen! I’m a black skater who is continuously inspired by your talent, joy and willingness to advocate for all people. Although, I personally do not find those posts offensive, I am so proud of you for addressing this issue and continuing to grow as a human. Even more than before, I will wear my Moxis with pride!

Super unexpected video. Super unexpected and some, in my opinion, respectfully, unnecessary apologies.
Each of those photos that you described, as individual photos /isolated events, seem totally appropriate and silly /fun with your friends. I don't doubt your heart nor do I think you participated in any of those shoots with the intention to offend or hurt others.
You are lovely and a great role model for addressing each one and I thank you for doing so. However, respectfully, it seems that this was a photo collage to attack you. How is that helpful? I could be wrong....I have not seen the post with the collage..
I am grateful for the conversation, but ANY photo, ANY "isolated chunk" of a conversation, can be misconstrued into an offensive action. I do not see this as helpful either.
There needs to be a balance. I would like to believe that this is what we are striving for. Call out for change and growth and understanding. Not to put someone down and make them doubt themselves as a human.
Estro Jen, YOU are the reason I wear my dope ass skates EVERY SINGLE DAY and I am ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
you have a beautiful heart. Don't let anyone make you doubt that. And good for you for coming out here and saying hey man, this made me rethink some stuff and I want to continue to grow alongside my epic community of rollerskaters🌈🤘🌈
Learn, grow, speak up, listen up, and LOVE 🧡💜💙💜🧡💙
and, rollerskate, duh 🌈😉🌈
Awesome comment👍

Its not my place to accept your apology as a white woman but I appreciate you coming out and addressing the situation. I look forward to seeing your future growth and change x
this is heartbreaking.. You have nothing to apologize for and this is sad that you have to admit to someone something you didn’t do just to keep your company safe.
I just want to say that your apologies are appreciated I myself am black, and there are so many things I would like to say to you but the bottom line is you are now part of the solution and not the problem. Much love Estro Jen
Howdy. My mother is a 74-year-old white female who wore a bee hive for years. It was a huge hair fashion for white women. In fact, she wore one on her wedding day in 1967. Please educate me on how the blond bee hive wig on your helmet was cultural appropriation. And before the hate starts flowing in on how I am not woke, I teach multicultural issues and have been active in LGBTQ+ and ethnic equal rights since before most of the readers here were born (I say ethnic because genetically, there is only one human race...homo sapiens. There used to be homo habilis, homo erectus, homo neanderthalensis [most of us carry 3% of these genes still], the Denisovians [some of us have these genes too], homo floesiensis, and homo naledi). I am also aware of how artists like Elvis got rich on cultural appropriation (Please watch Roller Dreams on Hulu regarding how Hollywood white washed roller skating). Love to all my fellow skaters including my BIPOC and Queer Skate Alliance family.
Yeah but it wasn’t an actual beehive wig it was an Afro wig she was calling a beehive
thank you, I have been thinking the same thing
Oh, I will wash that. Thanks for sharing.
Love you Estrojen, you are the reason I started roller skating! Roller skates have given me a new meaning and joy to my life!! You have done so much for the roller skate community! I agree with you that we all need to unite together and love as one, this world does deserve and need it!!
Estro, this is a great start, but please don't use this video as a way to simply clear your name, use it as a way to start making a difference understanding and helping other understand the influence of black culture in roller skating, and PLEASE, PLEASE, give us something about the Banzai situation. (Note I am not a person of color, but I feel as someone who isn't, I need to pressure myself and people who have influence to make positive change)
I ,honestly, saw they pictures awhile ago (my version of an ethics check is scrolling through an Instagram profile) the only photo that caused me to pause an examine was the braids one because, as a black woman, I get a little bit on edge about historically black hairstyles and the cultural appropriation of it. I remember thinking, "well this is with her friend and ,hopefully, she was just joking." I'm glad you are growing as an individual because without individual growth, there would be no community growth.
I still don't know how I feel about EstroJen, but this a step towards change.
Rollerskating culture is black culture
rollrsKatie yes specifically black individuals who roller skate
To be fair, not ALL roller skating culture is only black culture. Before anyone gets defensive over this comment, please pause and really ask yourself if roller skating in its entirety comes from only one race of people.
brianna sanchez why specifically just black skaters? I ask with respect and no harm intended
Rachel Enthusiast no but majority of things within skating culture came from black roller skating culture
Thank you for being sincere with your apology.
Everyone has work to do. I’m constantly learning and growing.
I just ordered my first pair of Moxi’s a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to joining the community.
You shouldn’t have to apologize for photos where clearly your intentions aren’t negative nor are they harmful.Keep doing your thing!!
Im white so this isn't my apology to accept, however I am happy you are owning up and apologising for your actions. I hope to see positive change and more inclusion in moxi. I'd like to see more skaters of colour (i know there are lots of amazing ones out there), skaters with disabilities, and plus size skaters.
i appreciate this video so very much. you do have a lot of power in the skating scene and i personally look to you for advice and opinion especially as it relates to the skating community. our community needs to be all inclusive. we learn from our mistakes and move forward to do better now that we know better. thank you for sharing your heart, owning the mistakes and sharing with us perspective. cheers from a fan in sacramento.
Too bad she's deleting comments
As a Latina it is not my place to accept this apology. But I sincerely commend you for apologizing and taking ownership of problematic situations (that I personally did not see as intentionally offensive). I could hear the sincerity and genuinely apologetic tone in your voice and I respect you for that. Thank you for keeping Moxi an open, diverse, and accepting group of people and standing by it!!!
I just want to add one thing, that you might already know but didn't quite come across in your video. The reasons behind why folks were offended is more than cultural appropriation. I think sometimes CA gets boiled down to the idea that you're using something that's not yours. But I think it's instructive for people to know that black women in this country have fewer opportunities for employment or advancement in their natural hair or protective styles. That being themselves carries an economic, and in the case of police interactions, a personal safety cost to them - and they must conform whether they like it or not in order to access the same privileges that we white folks get for free. So afros and dreadlocks and braids etc are something we white people can wear for fun while at the same time facing none of the negative repurcussions that black women do. I've never been told that the natural curl of my hair is inappropriate or unprofessional. It's never prevented my being hired or promoted. It's never affected any personal interactions - platonic or otherwise. It's never caused me to be racially profiled by the cops.
The offensive part truly is the 'unconscious' part of the bias. That you can try on their appearance or other cultural signifiers without understanding or communicating your understanding that you can do something for fun that could cause someone else to be racially profiled in a variety of ways. That you can live your life without knowing or seeing how other people in your society are being harmed is an important nuance that gets missed in a lot of similar situations like this one. I can see that you're sincerely sorry, that you are heartsick that you have caused harm and you want to be better. But I think part of moving forward is that understanding and ability to see what's happening outside of your own experience.
I can't accept your apology because I'm not the people who have been harmed, but I believe you intend to be true to your word and continue learning and growing and putting that knowledge to good use today and in the future. Now it's just gonna take the time to hang on and show your work. Good luck.
You are exactly right! As a black woman who has spent years building a charity for our community and working on ways to fix systemic racism, you are right on point! Thank you for sharing this!
Thank You
@@kristelb2756 thank you for that.
You know more about this than I do. I'm a little late to the party on this one. Wish I had all the details..So I could formulate amore inform opinion.
Honestly estrojen I really respect your apology and I really respect the fact that you didn’t try to excuse your actions, plus you’ve shown that you are working to changed to be more inclusive in your company and in your life in general. I have no issues supporting your business considering you are taking the steps to learn
Im a black female, I saw the pictures and was very disappointed. BUT, I think your response showed a willingness to having/keeping(🤞🏾) hard conversations on the forefront. Thanks for not making excuses. Thanks for recognizing changes need to happen immediately and daily. You’re on the right track chickie♥️✊🏾...stay the course and fight the good fight!!
