My last 4 Brain cells in the South we have a lot of nice nature, but the problem is I live all the way in the north so we only have small forests and lots of beaches. But in Germany is no desert
Often you end up with ponds that look like that from acid mine drainage where metal sulfides from the tailings (think pyrite and other similar sulfides) oxidise after being brought to the surface and leach down into the collection ponds with rain. You end up with a heap of sulfuric acid carrying a load of other dissolved nasties. It's a common ecological issue that comes after mining. Next time you head there take some pH test strips and see what it tests at. You may be surprised! (usual precautions: don't get it on your skin, etc)
