    If my students had a good attention span I would use this video in my art classes. Everything you're saying is gold.

    I really like how you've explained this. Lots of interesting academic stuff and also an encouragement to experiment and try new things. I wish my art teachers at school had been more like you!

    Alright i've only watched 1:10 of this video and I got here so quickly because I have you on notifications. With that being said Its a huge coincidence that I was in the middle of writing notes about the color wheel and their relationships and the difference between Chroma and Saturation for my color theory class trying to figure out if this is going to be really useful to me at all.

    Hi Biana, I'm trying to improve my art as I've never really put effort into it and I've suddenly found myself with a lot of time on my hands. I've done formal courses in loads of art-based niches (textiles, interior design etc) and I'm bloody sick of the colour wheel but still don't feel happy when I throw colours together. I forced myself to watch this video because I know it's an area I need to improve on. My god I'm so glad I did. I love your videos and your teaching. I'm going to be watching all your videos in my self made curriculum. I can't wait. I'm off to go watch your colour theory 2 video which 15 minutes ago I could never imagine myself wanting to do. You're awesome!

    I can't thank you enough. You made understanding color theory (which in itself is such an intimidating aspect of art to learn) and really made it understandable and more importantly, click and make some damn sense. I've been studying the color wheel and all the different color schemes, and nothing ever stuck with me. I'd find I would constantly have to go re read/re watch because all those fancy terms and confusing ways to harmonize color and blah blah ..they did not have any impact on me. Sometimes with art teaching others and trying to help does not require a "professional" description with all the correct names and all. It works for some yes, but for me no which made me feel hopeless. So a huge thank you for taking the time to make this video. :)

    You have the best eyebrows. And the color wheel is so unhelpful but helpful and extremely frustrating, but picking limited colors and mixing the colors together to make it cohesive is the easiest way of making everything look good. Very informative Great video!

    I can't really get the part of limiting my colors, because they are already limited into the main 5 colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, black and white) and that literally makes every single color in the color wheel. So if I'm mixing the colors how is that called limiting?

    If you only use watercolours using flat colours first doesn't work as you can't make things lighter afterwards or only do so on a vary limited scale.

    4:37 I know this is an old video, but whatever. You said that if you have 5 colors and mix them, you get 5 x 5 = 25 colors.
    That's not true. You can't mix color with itself, so 25 has 5 extra, so it's 20.
    On top of that, half of the 20 are the same, because cyan + magenta is the same as magenta + cyan. So you can get 10 extra colors by mixing 5 different colors. So in the end you have 15 different colors from 5 different color: 5 base ones and 10 by mixing.
    Of course I've assumed that you are only allowed to mix two colors from the original five in 50%/50% proportions to get another color
    Anyway, great video c:

      A+C
      A+D
      A+E
      B+C
      B+D
      B+E
      C+D
      C+E
      D+E
      So 5 base colours and 10 by mixing

    I really liked the video and I don't mind how long it was. Starting out with 5 set colors makes a lot of sense. If you included the stages of an actual drawing cut into the visuals it might of helped but I got the idea anyway. :)

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You and someone else mentioned that so I think my next vid is just gonna be my complete coloring process (which'll be hilarious cause it takes me literally until the last 15 mins before everything comes together I s2g). So yeah, be on the lookout! :D

  • @Smilyfeka
    @Smilyfeka 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    mixing 5 colors with each other gives you 15 colors :) 5x5 would mean that mixing a color with itself gives you a new color you also count some pairings twice for 25

  • @miraroy489

    i completely agree with pretty much everything you said but i dont think its fair to tell people they "cant" use more than 5 colors or using a 50/50 ratio for complimentary colors looks "bad" . it depends on what someones going for

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No that's true, there are no hard and fast rules in color theory and lord knows I've used more than 5 base colors. And the 50/50 rule is really specific to using exactly 50/50 of the pure compliments, like true green and true red. You make your composition equally half those two colors and it WILL look like shit, I'm sticking to that. Thanks for pointing that stuff out, I'll try to be more clear next time :D

  • @irlporygon-z6929
    @irlporygon-z6929 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Haha, if you start with 5 colors you can mix more than 25 colors. In fact, the total number of colors you can mix is 31, if you ignore the proportion of each color in the mix. Of course, several of these aren't useful (for example, mixing all 5 colors or even 4 of the 5 would probably result in something you'd rather not use).
