a teacher I knew once made us go around with a jar for a week and stuff it with plants and stones and random other things we found lying around. we then taped off a bit of the jar and drew just that bit. it was nice because there was a lot of compositions to pick around from and I thought it was a good idea if you don't really have any ideas for still lifes!

For an art school or program you'll typically need a portfolio, and you should want half of that portfolio to be drawn from life (i.e., figure drawings, still lifes ect.). Hope this helps.

I'm so mad at my old art teacher right now. Another great tutorial.
I was taught to start measuring the little item and see how many times it'd fit in the bigger item. This way you get a more precise measurement.
