    There are 3 types of mikvahs
    1) the women's mikvah as detailed in this video
    2) the men's mikvah - most hasidic men go to the mikvah every morning before praying. They don't have to do the same prep that women do, they just go right in and out. Other Orthodox jews who are not hasidic will go to the mikvah once a week before shabbos and some others will only go before the High Holidays
    3) the mikvah for vessels - if you get silverware or other dishes (other than plastic stuff) they must be immersed in a mikvah before being used for the first time. Those are smaller mikvahs designed specifically for that use

    As an orthodox woman, this Mikva experience is super exciting and special. After two weeks apart, yes, 2 weeks! It’s amazing coming back home all glammed up to your husband that is waiting just for you.

    Allison Josephs (Jew in the City) is an amazing commentator with the mission of explaining the beauty in Judaism and the Jewish community.
    Married woman use the mikveh and not single women because Orthodox Jews hold that there are no sexual relations outside of marriage. This is not to say that people always do the right thing. But before marriage, young girls and boys who are engaged generally take what are known as chosson (groom) or kallah (bride) classes to learn the laws of family purity. Until the engagement, these rules are not taught because there was no need to know them until that point.
    As noted in another comment, men sometimes use the mikveh as well, and the mikveh is also used to immerse new dishes (plates, cups, pots, pans, etc.) This video only touched on the use of mikveh for women.

    One of the blessings we say to a couple on their wedding day is. "אהבה ואחווה שלום ורעות" which translate to "Love friendship and peace", and represent this idea that 2 weeks of the month you get to enjoy and work on loving one another, and 2 weeks of the month you get to enjoy and work on friendship, and that brings a perfect balance of, Love friendship and peace in a marriage.

    @PortuguesePai the app is not an appointment app, it's a app for women to help with there counting, there's a lot of laws regarding a woman's period she didn't mention in the video because the video was about the mikva itself, basically in the app you punch in when you had your period, (day or evening) and it helps remind you when mikva is , plus lots of other features.

    Oh wow! You e touched a very strong point of Judaism!
    So it’s like this, when a married women gets her period she and her husband will not touch even hand over things to each other for the time she’s bleeding plus seven clean days.
    After she has gone to the Mikva she will come home and then she and her husband are allowed to touch and………
    It’s an amazing experience as it’s said “absence makes the heart grow fonder”
    Every time the husband and wife “reunite” it’s an excitement just like getting married again
    As for unmarried women this doesn’t pertain to them as we only go to the Mikva to get clean for the husband…

  • @familyfirst4ever
    @familyfirst4ever ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just want to mention how important the Mitzvah of mikvah is. Some women will take a plane to get to a mikvah. Or, if they don't have a mikvah near them, they'll go in the nearest body of natural water which could be the beach - in their birthday suit.
    On a side note, when a woman has a baby, she goes to the Mikvah after she stops bleeding - she can't have physical touch with her husband from when she's delivering the baby (actually, it's when the first drop of blood is noticed during labor) until she stops bleeding, a minimum of 7 days for a boy and 14 days for girls. This means that the husband can't watch the actual birth or hold his wife's hand during the delivery. Being that these days the doctors suggest waiting 6 weeks until resuming marital relations, the mikvah is usually pushed off for a few weeks - but in truth, how many women these days bleed for so short after giving birth??? Let me tell you, the wait is brutal. Having been together for many months, and then not being together in the most vulnerable moments, is very hard.

    @baileydavis5000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi! I think one of the reasons I see some hate comments on this video is because Jews have typically gotten a lot of hate for this mitzvah.
    People don’t understand, think it’s something negative about women that they’re “unclean” and they also say it’s nuts to have no physical contact with your husband for this amount of time…it’s hard to understand as an outsider and we get ridiculed for this a lot, they say that Judaism is sexist and misogynistic etc. so we’re a little wary of outsiders reacting to it. I’m sorry you’re getting these comments.
    You are correct, it’s 7 days after your cycle, but you must count at least 5 days of your period first, so it’s a minimum of 12 days sometimes more.
    Unmarried women do not go. A bride goes before her wedding.
    I think it’s worth noting that a lot of married Jewish women are either pregnant, nursing, or on birth control a lot of the time. So it doesn’t usually turn out that they go to the mikvah every single month.

    In fact, the mikvah is used not only by women after the menstrual period (in Hebrew: "nida"), but also by men.
    Most religious Jewish men practice dipping in the mikvah before Yom Kippur, and there are many who dip more often, such as before every holiday, or before every Shabbat, and some even dip every morning.
    According to the Halacha, before going up to the Temple Mount you must be immersed in the mikvah, and only then can you go up to the Temple Mount.
    To avoid chastity problems, it is usually customary for women to dip at night, while men dip in the morning, often in separate places.

    Mikvah for women in judisam is only if your married or are over age 12 and going up to the Temple Mount also known as Har Habyit. Outside of Israel mikvah is only for married women not single women. In Israel if a single woman wishes to go up to the Temple Mount per Jewish law known as halcha. Even a single women must go to mikvah and follow the process thats known as family purity/ Tahart Hamishpacha. Meaning waiting minimum of 4-5 days after your period to do what's called a hefsek tahra ( a stop) and then count 7 clean days. On the night of the seventh day which is considered the 8th day you go to mikvah

    • @michellelansky4490
      @michellelansky4490 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your info for the most part is correct. Re the temple mount.....mikvah alone is not metaher for tumas mes (neither for men or women) so not sure how a reg mikvah would help. Secondly, the time to wait to do a hefsek tahara is min 5 days but never 4.

    Other commenters have covered the basics as far as the differences between men and women immersing in a Mikvah. Men can go whether married or not, women go when married and right before the wedding. As she explained, going to the Mikvah is a purification process, so any immersion in a Mikvah is purifying, be it a man, woman, or vessel. Virtually every Jewish community has a women’s Mikvah.
    Also, something important to note-during covid basically everything was shut down. Schools closed, synagogues and other places of worship were closed. Businesses were closed. The one thing that remained open throughout was the women’s Mikvah!

    Women going to the Mikvah is a biblical commandment. This only applies to married women, as the requirement is specifically before having any relations with their spouse.
    During the times of the jewish holy temple there were times men had to go to the Mikvah, for example to bring sacrifices, this is of biblical origin but is not relevant today.
    Men going to a Mikvah today (aside from very few cases) is only a kabbalistic tradition. There are some like most chassidim who have the custom of going everyday before prayers, others who have the custom to go before Shabbat (Saturday) or holidays, and most all Jewish men have a custom of going before the high holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur).

    just a very important thing - Non married woman don't go to the Mikvah ONLY since a certain time after the destruction of the holy temple. BUT - when they want to go on the Temple mount they are OBLIGATED to do so!
    there are many many Halachic views regarding that topic, as long as the holy temple isn't built yet.
    but the reason non married woman don't go to the Mikvah, is that they don't want to let them think that they can be with a man without marriage. in more ancient times, things were different.
    also - the woman who examines us doesn't HAVE TO examine us ourselves, again - it depends in which Mikvah the woman goes. this is NOT an obligation from the Torah, it's just something that the Jewish women themselves took upon themselves, just to make sure that every thing is right.
    I have never had someone really examine me - they just ask and remind me of all the things I should examine myself to make sure I didn't forget anything. some ask me if I want them to examine me (NO), and they just make sure that my whole body is immersed - I am talking about ultra orthodox women. again - this is NOT an obligation. I even went to a Mikvah where the examiner doesn't check that even if you choose not to and this is the basic Halacha - the woman is trusted to do it right without and examiner, it's just a precaution done for generations..
    But seriously - you should listen to some lessons in the site of Machon Meir - your thirst for Jewish knowledge might get what it wants.

    The minimum about of mikvah water is the amount of water it would take to completely submerge the body of an average size man. In practice all mikvahs have substantially more water than the minimum.
