Sohyang is very knowledgeable about her technique and voice and has been singing with this level of technical proficiency since around 2007. She has yet to experience any real regression and sings like this in virtually every song, often for up to an hour at actual concerts. Her stamina and ease is incredible. Her supported range sits consistently at about G#3-C#6-E6, so these Bb5 belts are not much of a challenge for her. They’re not strained at all. She’s very well trained by professional coaches and is a coach and lecturer on technique herself! You should definitely listen to more of her. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Arirang Alone” would be great to check out next!
If I remember correctly she also had some training by Micheal Jackson's vocal coach.

Sohyang is a 100% self taught singer, with only a few sessions with Seth Riggs about 2009 or 2010 while on vacation in the US. According to Sohyang, Seth Riggs helped her learn how to hit a note precisely. Perhaps hard to believe the greatest female singer of our era is entirely self-taught but it is true. Sohyang is almost a freak of nature!
You were very quick to identify Sohyang as a soprano. As you noted, Sohyang is someone who really knows how to use her voice. Certainly not everyone should try to sing the way she does. She also takes great care of the health of her vocal chord, even after surviving cancer and continues to be burdened with managing the aftercare. She did this performance in 2014, when she was about 36, but even today, at the young age of 42, she continues to deliver performances like this regularly. Clearly you are technically knowledgeable with a keen interest in vocal pedagory. I agree. I like them both though, subjectively. Objectively, Sohyang is already a star rated vocalist for her techniques. Although she wasn't at the beginning of her career, Sohyang worked hard. Give Dimash a few more years, he will iron out the notes where he currently strains, and he will widen his supported range, not just his overall range. Dimash has the potential and he's disciplined. I'm rooting for him. I just hope he doesn't follow the wrong path of many artists in the past who overworked themselves due to high demand, then neglected further development, or even regressed.

That's actually the main reason why I'm not such a big fan of her anymore as I used to be: the toxic fandom. Not all of fans are like that, but maaaany. She has a lot of broadway in her voice, she said that she used to sing disney a lot as a kid. What is gospel about her voice is her belts and runs.

She is more CCM and Gospel rather than broadway. I am sure she can do broadway also but her being a devout Christian she tends to stick closer to gospel.
You can hear Gospel and Broadway both combined in her voice 🙌 that's how great she is! :)
Apart from some voice lessons with Seth Riggs round about 2012 I believe she is self-taught. She is a guest lecturer atBeakseok University and does vocal coaching. She is also a cancer survivor and has health struggles but from interviews I know she looks after her voice. Her Father-In-law is her manager but I don't know if she has a vocal coach, but probably not. Dimash came way after her, and she is a lot older than he is at 41-42 so it would be more fitting to compare him to So Hyang, not the other way around. So Hyang simply refused to sign to big labels, she sings for God and to help heal and comfort people and stays in control of what music she produces.
In my opinon it doesn't make any sense to compare them at all :-D Different age groups, different gender, and not even the same genre. Dimash is a classical crossover singer, Sohyang is a pop singer. Dimash is especially known for mixing pop with bel canto and ethnic elements, his vocal acrobatics and his wide range, and Sohyang is epecially known for her own style of pop music, her powerful 5th octave belts, and her nice, rounder sound. I sometimes wonder what's going on on the mind of people who compare totally different singers. Probably sth like that: Oh my god, both are Asians and both are skilled, they are practically the same person!!! lol :-D In my opinion there's no one who is very similar to Sohyang's style, but if I had to choose, I'd rather say Whitney than Dimash

She actually gives lectures at Beakseok University for singing and vocal technique, and has prevsiusly worked with Seth Riggs. So she really knows how to use her voice while keeping it healthy.

Welcome to So Hayng's world. She is one of the best but least known female vocalists because she is a South Korean Gospel singer. She is a lyric soprano. She rearranges all the covers that she does and often changes music styles within one song, she's known for doing both. So Hyang stated clearly a number of times on being coached by Seth Riggs in interviews. She stated in a TV interviews that she learned how to sing properly from Seth Riggs who coached on how to develop her voice, and went through vocal exercises with her, when she was in the States. Entirely Truthful statement.
AND it was important enough to her that she has mentioned it a number of times in TV interviews. She also noted she learned to sing proper mixed voice with Seth Riggs. So Hyang absolutely credits Seth for the present quality of her singing. ALSO in her own lecture/presentation to a music class in Uni in Korea when asked she said that she did not sing with her voice, but sang with her breath. These things I have heard right from So Hyangs mouth.
Who are you arguing with? She has said many times she had a few sessions with Seth and he taught her how to perfect her mixed voice. If someone disagrees they don't know So Hyang

Sohyang posted a NEW song dedicated to people suffering from the pandemic. Her version of "Amazing Grace" will change you. The simple fact of her singing "how sweet the sound," requires a thick towel to sop up your inevitable tears.
She knows and understands her voice more than you expect haha. She takes VERY VERY VERY good care of her voice. She even goes to the extent of not drinking coffee as she believes it's not good for her voice. She's like the perfect fusion of vocal coach and singer. She has a perfect understanding of the voice without losing that "singer quality". As we all know, vocal coaches have this signature "vocal coach" techniques, style and tone.

You absolutely need to hear more of her. This is one of my least favorite performances of hers, despite still being amazing. Her cover of Arirang Alone, which is a modern interpretation of a very old Korean folk song simply known as Arirang. The lyrics were rewritten to act as a metaphor for the pain caused by the partition of Korea and the longing for reunification, and the song is considered an unofficial national anthem.
Her cover of Everyone is absolutely incredible. She's claimed it was the hardest song she's had to prepare for. It's a Korean gospel song that was originally released as a pop song. Considering the subject matter and Sohyang's story, I think the song really resonates with her, and you can really hear it in how she sings. I'd consider Everyone to be her absolute best performance of anything.
She has more talent in one pinky than 90% of these rich millionaire popular singers out now these days.

So Hyang's best friend is "PARK KI-YOUNG", she for 20 years has sung contemporary pop and some rock. Well, she decided to try some Classical, so she sang "NELLA FANTASIA". This is from a pop and rock singer. This tells me if you got it, you got it!!! By the way, she is a year older than So Hyang!! You will not be disappointed!!

Gosh, people, Sohyang is pronounced as 소향. Please learn how to pronounce Korean letters phonetically and then try to say her name correctly instead of trying to correct reactors to say her name with the wrong pronunciation.
I think know that when arranged songs,they're arranged the song together with the broadcaster's arranger and her husband
And song is completed by her final modification and directing the orchestra and chorus.
(She is officially a lead vocal in the CCM band called POS and husband is drummer in same band.The purpose of her singing is charity activities and to comfort people,
So she never contract with a any agency because she is concerned about her activities being restricted)

A few interesting facts I can think of currently about her is that years ago she worked with Seth Riggs the vocal coach of artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Ray Charles, Madonna, Stevie Wonder and Barbara Streisand to learn how to use a mixed voice technique.
Also after this, she was actually invited by Michael Bolton to perform with him at his concert in Seoul.

Sohyang is one of geatest singer in the world.
I've always found it more cringy than helpful when vocal coach's try to copy vocally what they are hearing from the performance they are reacting to. More often than not (as in this case) they go flat and are so tonally different from the singer they are watching that it just sounds wrong. It's your channel so do what you like but if it were me I'd pull back a little on that.

The singers you named are people she admires, but she is not derivative. I'm surprised you didn't recognize that she is a gospel singer. Maybe you've never heard a great gospel singer before. If she puts anybody in my mind, it's Aretha Franklin. She has studied with a teacher, but not she is one, and I don't think her study was extensive. She's pretty much a natural. some people are.
