    It's on - a drag race of epic proportions. It's the world's fastest four-door sedan, the Tesla Model S P85D, against Australia's fastest four-door sedans, the Supercheap Auto Racing Holden Commodore V8 Supercar and the Walkinshaw Performance W507 HSV GTS.
    The Tesla Model S P85D rockets from 0-100km/h in just 3.3-seconds, while the V8 Supercar does it in 3.4-seconds, but weighs just 1400kg with the driver.
    Strap on as we see who wins - USA v Australia.

    As much of a fan as I am of the Tesla, I really did think the V8 supercar would have been much closer. Sucks that it got smoked, I love those supercars. But god damn, that Tesla is crazy.
    What's mind boggling to think is if Tesla made an out and out supercar I wouldn't be surprised if the thing warped into another fucking dimension.

    • @asdfsecond
      @asdfsecond 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Azad Jalali That would be a pretty unfair comparison. Of course the V8 Supercar would've won, it is a highly modified racing car, with slicks and aero. The Tesla is stock and not homologated, and is really just a rather advanced electric family sedan. When compared to normal cars, it still does pretty well around corners, pulling 0.87 G on skidpad tests.

    • @azadjalali1359
      @azadjalali1359 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Peifeng Wang I don't think it would be a fair comparison with that car specifically, but it should have been part of the test. I don't think .87 G is very competitive for the Model S's price bracket. That said, I expect my next car purchase will be an electric car regardless of which takes corners faster today or in the future, so this is a bit moot.

    • @alergej
      @alergej 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Helly32 I wouldn't be too euphoric about Tesla. Sure, the company has done very well and the model s is an awesome machine, but you mostly only see 0-60 or quarter mile performance tests, because this is the area where electric vehicles have their main advantage compared to petrol or diesel cars due to their charactaristic torque curve. But on mountain roads, the autobahn or racetracks the tesla still can't compete with it's rivals because of the very high weight (altough the low center of gravity makes up for it a bit), overheating (it can't perform one full lap on the nurburgring at full power) and the torque curve (acceleration is a lot worse at higher speeds). The biggest problem with telsa is that it is not profitable and won't be in the near future. That is what prevents other brands to really get into the electric car business. But as soon as batteries become cheaper, the big car companies will also start building really good electric cars but probably for a better price (simply because they are much more experienced and thus efficient in the manufacturing process) and tesla will get a really hard time maintaining it's success. Sorry for my bad english :)

      Tesla have major flaws as a company which makes life difficult for Tesla owners. Here in Australia, where do you send your Tesla for servicing or repairs ? Tesla only has 6 shops in Australia and no infrastructure like the other car companies with dealerships everywhere. And from researching Teslas, they have a few drawbacks, EVERYTHING has to be done by someone authorized, even the paint, because of the amount of sensors on a Tesla if the paint is too thick it interferes with the sensors. And Tesla have the monopoly on parts, google some of the prices for parts if you can get them. Most the stuff i have seen on Tesla's is from America, but a slight crash and i mean slight as in a dent, is enough for an insurance company to write the whole care off, because they are so expensive and hard to repair.
      I think for that sort of money i would stick with a more mainstream company

    Meanwhile, here in the real world in Australia I have owned a Model S for almost a year. Running costs have been an extra $20/quarter on my power bill - lost solar feed in. I won't be needing to get it serviced any time soon, the brakes and discs will last 8+ years, the battery has more than 7 years remaining warranty, the whole car has more than three years warranty left, I have never been beaten by anyone who wanted to have a go at the lights, I can merge and pass instantly and silently no matter what, I have more interior space than a full sized SUV, I have double the load space of a full sized SUV and triple that of any other sedan. I haven't been to a petrol station this year, I get free energy whilst parked at my local shopping centre or my favourite nearby restaurants - that's free parking and free 'fuel' while I'm parked. The car has had two performance enhancing software updates since I bought it - so it has gotten better with age - for free.

    I'm going to make a few videos of petrol stations to show my kids. He's only 3 and he knows a petrol station when he sees one... but alas, this era is coming to an end. Not abruptly. Not immediately, but slowly but surely the electric era will dominate.
    In the future, people will drive around in old cars that emit sounds of petrol engines. Perhaps they will vibrate, too. But, pop the hood and you'll find an electric donk in there. Real petrol engines will be few and far between.
    50 years from now, if you ever manage to drive your internal combustion engine down the main strip, it will initially be faced with scepticism "Ohh yeah sure, that aint a real internal combustion engine. It's just an electric engine with speakers."
    Then... you pop the hood and everyone will gasp. It will put a smile on people's faces. Imagine... these engines filled practically every car in the world for a century. The sound was glorious. The ride was mesmerising. It was an amazing time in human history. Such nostalgic imagery would undoubtedly be very selective. We will remember the good and forget the bad.
    The internal combustion engine, after all is said and done, is a complete and utter hack. It always has been. Through pragmatism and sheer willpower we have made it refined. In the words of Reeves Callaway: "If you think about all the parts required to get something as archaic as the internal combustion engine to work properly, you'd go crazy - the device normally shouldn't work very well. But, after a century of constant evolution it is an example of execution over design."
    Electric motors? My gosh... so straight forward. So simple it's embarrassing. You see what these first generation Teslas can do? That was nothing. The tech is not even trying. There's not even decent competition in the electric car space yet. But competition IS coming... and when it comes in 2016, 2017, 2020... 2025... my gosh... it won't even be a contest anymore.
    The electric car's reputation is not going to be made on videos such as this. It's going to be made on the streets. In countless drag races across the world. The traffic light grand prix. One by one, petrol enthusiasts will fall. Confident in their machinery to prevail... and in the seconds after the lights go green watch the brutal stark reality flood over their gaze.
    That's not to say that there isn't something awesome about internal combustion engines. They will be sorely missed. Many will become collectors items... but don't try and pit them against the new stuff. It's a battle that seems neck and neck at the moment - but as time goes on it's just going to get silly.
    There is more to love about internal combustion than speed. There is no shame in admitting a quicker and more powerful tech that is transitioning our personal mode of terrestrial transport. You got something special to share your kids and your grand kids when all this ALL THIS people... is gone. You have a special place in history.
    You got to drive internal combustion engined vehicles. Be proud of that. Remember that.

    Those who say _"Ohh it's not the same feeling, not the same whine"_ is akin to some old fella saying they miss the whine of their horse with the carriage :D :D
    Yeah technology is tearing down petrol motors, accept it.
    - On a race track, performance matters - acceleration and speed. The car delivers. Garages don't care about high rpm sounds.
    - For governments etc, low pollution matters. The car delivers.
    - For normal people, efficiency and quietness matter (on top of all above). The car delivers.
    This technology will only improve, but surely take over everything in no time.
    You are still allowed to whip out your old petrol engine car and take it for a ride, people will reminisce indeed with "awww" smiles on how undeveloped we were. It will make nice humbling moments.

    • @tarcal87
      @tarcal87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Roxy B True, but technology will only improve, that is guaranteed, battery life-wise.
      Not only that, but just like we have petrol stations (as your regular car also can't run infinite kms), we'll have recharge stations that may not take hours like it does now :)
      I had also read ideas about roads that recharge the car from beneath, on the go - i.e. for buses on bus lanes it's a viable plan and research area.
      At the rate technology evolves (and has evolved), it would be really surprising if in 50 years' time we'd still use petrol engines and see this as an abandoned idea (which, already worked)

    • @chaoticmonkey243
      @chaoticmonkey243 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Roxy B "normal" people don't do more than 500km in a day. I don't know if you have seen the range of a normal car with a normal tank of petrol the average is around 600km. I'd take an overnight charge that costs $5 over a $80 fuel bill every second day in your "normal" scenario any day.
      I'd also like to point out that and electricity power point is more readily available and convenient then going to a petrol station
      Roxy B is just disappointed that in the near future they won't be able to compensate for having no brains and a shit life with annoying others by excessively revving their engine.

    This didn't surprise me a bit. I drive locomotives and I can tell you that in railway world, an electric locomotive will out accelerate a diesel with twice the horsepower. Take a NSWGR 46 class with 3,400 (starting) hp and weighing 120 tons and no train behind. Stand behind the driver's seat and smash the throttle. It will throw you against the rear wall of the cab so hard and until she tops out, you can't get off the wall or even tilt your head forward. We used to do that for fun whenever the opportunity presented itself (sadly, not often). A bit like riding the Rotor at Luna Park, but in a straight line. Whether it's a locomotive or a car, nothing beats electric.

    yes, future is bright. No stupid fuel injectors, no stupid fuel pumps, no stupid turbos, no stupid watter pumps, no stupid smelly gas and so on and on. I am so annoyed of owning internal combustion vehicles... The time will come..

    Incredible performance from the Tesla. We should all be driving electric cars, you have to wonder the health effects of living next to a busy main road or a indoor car park with a heap of cars idling. It gives you a bad headache. With performance like that, I hope electric cars become the norm.

    Just to show you how fast the Tesla is, this car wasn't even in Ludicrous Mode which is even faster (about .4 of a second faster to 100kmh). This car was just in Insane Mode. And what skews the results even more is that the Tesla can get these results by any moron who can push their foot down when the light turns green. The race car needed a professional race car drivers to time the shifts correctly and make sure the tires don't spin at the start. It takes a LOT more skill to get great times in a manual car. The times Road & Track or Car & Driver or Motor Trend get when testing exotic vehicles are by highly skilled drivers. The average Joe won't match those times if he drives the car. But with the Tesla it doesn't really matter what your skill level is. ANYONE (even Grandmas) can get the same time as a skilled race car driver. Bravo Tesla (can you tell I'm a shareholder)!!!
