- Over the three-day Wellington Anniversary Weekend, Steam Incorporated held an open weekend at their depot in Paekakariki. You could see JA 1271 and AB 608 in steam, with two diesel locomotives - DAs 1410 and 1431 - also in action. J 1234 was on display next to the main carpark. This locomotive hasn't run under her own power in around 20 years, and she's still awaiting restoration.
I visited the depot on the 2nd and 3rd days of the event, getting to drive JA 1271 and climb up on J 1234's footplate in the process. The next day I had a cab ride with DA 1431. During the proceedings I also went to look in the sheds, where they had a few diesel shunters, a Garratt steam locomotive from Zimbabwe, and three other locomotives in various stages of restoration (KA 945, DC 4375 and DA 1471). - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

The bus is a Volvo B10M ex Mana but originally a WCT "Ansaldo"

It would be great if I see the former MAXX SA/SD carriages (such as Te Huia and the Capital Connection) being drawn by these steam locomotives.
Nice to see J1234 still looking as beautiful as ever. Was there any indication of how far along 945 was in her restoration?
I forgot to ask the volunteers, but I saw that the boiler, tender body and driving wheels are still not attached, while the cab is back on the frame.

$50 for driving?! I drove Midlander on the Talyllyn for £10! And normally its driver for a fiver on other lines, although it was £10 again for driving 5199 up and down Minehead station, on the loco's society AGM back in October (which was lovely, apart from the reverser being so heavy I had to have help pulling it into reverse, mainly as the weight on the valve gear drops down when in forward gear)
I don't get why the JA or AB driver experience was so expensive, but I dare say Steam Inc. would have their reasons. The price you paid to drive Midlander is equal to around $20 or $21 (NZD), so it makes Steam Inc's price look like a rip-off.
As for 5199, that's a Large Prairie I remember seeing in a video on the Llangollen Railway.
I mean yeah it's pricey but I wouldn't mind paying that much especially if it goes towards restoration projects.
@@DC4260Productions In 1998 to drive that same loco in the yard was $50, jump forward to now and it probably should have been $150, that is because in 2023 things are very expensive, coal is expensive, You were also paying for NZ State Highway 59 Traffic management, the bus, the porta loos, advertising, and the countless other items which are one off's and not Steam Inc's normal day to day activities. At the end of the day did you enjoy your drive?? Are you still thinking about the day you drove the Ja, would you do it again in a heart beat?? Please note the bus didn't go to the trams as that is additional cost and I doubt it was in the tramways budget to help cover those costs.
