This was a HUGE help for me. I didn't have the wires inside the wall color coordinated so when this video told me that the bare copper wire was the ground cable wire and to connect the light switch green wire to the bare copper ground wire that was what I needed to get the light switch connected & eventually working properly. I thank you again for posting this video.
@@youtubeshypocrisyHe said, "to install a single pole dimmer switch" indicating what was coming explained that scenario specifically. The switch he was installing had the OPTION to be installed either way.
That is perfectly normal. The demonstration in this video used a 3-way switch as an example, that's why there were more wires. For just a standard 2-way switch you will only have 2 wires, line and load (and a ground).
The dimmer switch I pulled out of my daughter's kitchen wall has 2 black wires only. The box is grounded. However, the new dimmer switch I bought at Home Depot two days ago has 3 or 4 wires? Any helpful info? Thank you..
Unnecessarily confusing. Why not say in THIS demonstration the dimmer being used is for a 3-way circuit {a light that can be controlled from two separate switches}? And to begin with, since people are just trying to learn dimmer switch basics, why not use a REGULAR single-pole dimmer {for switch that controls one light}? Besides missing these really really basic points, the rest isn't that bad.
“Thanks, Home Depot. You explained absolutely nothing.” Did you know there are many English grammar lessons on TH-cam as well. 👍 What else did you need to know? lol this video was a perfect explanation.. what’s missing??
@@Bardotunes What's missing is a comma after the word "TH-cam", and a third period after the word "explanation" in your sentences. Your comment would have landed, but my grammar was perfectly fine. Where do you think my syntax failed? What's missing from the video is any actual explanation of the wiring, how to test for the right wiring, and what wires can be connected each other without damaging your home or starting a fire. This is at best a dangerous explanation of this installation, and at worst a non-explanation.

That makes it a feature of grammar, not a "sub-division". Your welcome for correcting you. I hope you don't make the same mistakes in the future. Thanks for the video. Although it is very helpful but please explain why you have 4 wires when you remove the on/off switch.
4 wires because the switch was a 3 way switch and the dimmer could be used as a 3way dimmer switch as well
@@mikeoxlong_1654true but they said it was a 1 pole switch lol makes no sense why you’d have a 3 way for a 1 pole switch.

Thank you Home Depot, very cool
not very clear about which color goes with what
Hopefully all the colors match. They usually do. Green goes to green or bare back to black white to white
Switches don't use white
@@vastreyt1204 concept
You still have to connect the whites to white.
Mine new switch has 2 blacks and one green. My wire box has a white a black and a green. Green to green but which black goes on white?
What about when the dimmer switch does NOT come with wires already attached to it, which happens most of the time?
mofos didnt even say which wire goes where, they just said connect the wires
They are color coded you mook.
Thank you home depot!
What if the house has no ground wire?
I wanted to see where wires go on the dimmer switch this is unclear.
No Home Depot theme song 😪
Both wires coming out of my wall (besides ground) were black. I just winged it. It worked.
Thats usually how it works, nuteral is white

I need to know this too, my dinning room only has 2 wires and they only sell a single pole or three way pole! so confusing@@bobviavattine1715
@@bobviavattine1715you bought the wrong dimmer switch. You bought a 3 way dimmer. You need a 2 way dimmer
I’ve selected this clip to learn about installing a dimmer switch, not to listen to music! If you have to play music, turn it down!!!

Well that suck!!
The worst tutorial ive ever see
Useless video. No. info. on what wire goes with what except for. the ground. :/
Match them to each other, as in red with red, etc.

Dimmer switches do not save electricity! Dimmer switches work by soaking up the excess power thereby lowering the power output to the light.
not true for newer types of light and dimmer from what I see
Well this was a waste of time. “Connect a dimmer switch by connecting a dimmer switch.”
You on the spectrum? Very easy to follow
This is a terrible instructions video. I'm going to Lowe's.
Not clear at all
If you’re that thick, call an electrician
This video is useless. It doesn’t explain anything about line/load connections, pigtails, or anything helpful.
That got be the most dumbest tutorial ever doesn’t even show what wire goes to which
