I have 3 black wires coming into my current switch and an unused bare copper wire, and a an unused white wire. How am I supposed to know which wires are negative and positive and which ones to use when all 3 are black?
the problem with both of your "how to" videos on this subject is that you don't show where the wires land on the switch. you show lead wires hanging out but its hard to tell which screws those leads are under.
Sort of a helpful video but another way to figure out the load or the hot if you've already removed your switched without tagging, the wire is to separate the wires. Trim them back while the power is off. Turn the power back on. Use a multimeter and find which one has 120 to volts coming to it. Tag that wire
Very good instructions. In a hallway for beds and bath. Used on one switch on a one switch in a 3 rocker switch/3 light system. Did not have to do anything with the other 2 rocker switches. Makes a great solution as a hallway night light system.
Please tell me about the - and + adjustment knob. I have installed two of these and cannot get any control at the slider. I have Off and On working perfectly, but the slider isn't making any difference on dimming the lights. Any chance of you actually covering a complete installation of this DIMMER switch?
It’s been a year, did you figure it out? It’s normally an issue where the bulbs are not meant to dim and so start fully on with the tiny amount of electricity the dimmer puts out on the low side
I've got a black and a white wire coming out of wall. This switch only has a red and a black wire and does not help me at all... does not explain where my white wire goes...

Yes. Older houses don't always have a ground wire in the wall box. Just cap the green wire on the dimmer. It will not impede the operation of the dimmer.
Please put up a video explaining the same installs but with a switch leg, not one wire running all the way through the switch junction box and on to the fixture. If I figure it out first I’ll edit this comment.

In the Single Pole Application, u should make sure u connect the black wire from the dimming switch to the Line wire (normally black) on the switch but there are 2 black wires in the videos, there is 1 Line wire and 1 Load wire, so u should be careful with that, the video is not very clear.
Note, very important: When finished, make sure the grooves in the screw heads (for flat head screwdriver) are vertical, not horizontal. How do I know this? Because 24 years ago when my house was built the electrician did this at every switch and plug in my house. I have faithfully followed this example whenever changing a switch or plug and have never had a problem. So there.
Jesus Christ... every example completely avoids the reality of what's in the wall. 3 wires coming out 1. BLACK, 2. WHITE, 3. GROUND. The ground is a no brainer, but does the white wire connect to the RED wired from the switch, or the BLACK Wire???? Which, you would THINK - black to black.... but no, let's post a video to help "do-it-yourself" people out and completely sidestep the obvious issue. By the way, there isn't two white wires tied together coming out of my wall. Can someone (please) tell me in the example above, what the white wire should connect to?
Came here to say this. Sounds like you and I have a switch leg that runs down the wall, whereas it looks like this video explains how to install when the wire just runs through the switch to the fixture. I’m not an electrician though.
My wall switch worked. And I have 2 switches for the same light. Now trying to install this with microscopic " instructions" had to enlarge on the printer. Crappy diagram doesn't tell where red white wire goes. Called them twice. Couldn't get it to work. Changed wires around 50 times...only way I can get the second switch to work is by putting ALL black wires together and the night light comes on like that too...but dimmer switch won't work. I'm about to pay an electrician to do it. Or just put a wall switch back in and take a hammer to the dimmer switch...
I just installed mine, it’s easy. I only had a white and red wire, (no ground) . The red with the white stripe I did not connected to anything, the black goes to the black and my white one I connected it to the solid red on the switch, and my ground I drilled a hole on the same metal box, not sure if it will make a difference but it’s working for me. I hope it helps. Take care.
Black and red from the switch should both be on a black wire in the box. It doesnt matter which is which. The whites should all be twisted together inside the box and not connected to the switch at all. Then the green from the light switch and the green or bare copper in your wall should be wire nutted together
Horrible explanation didn’t use correct words like hot, neutral, ground, line, load or 3way screw? Never heard of a common wire maybe she meant hot wire??Not all your switches have colored wires and the screws are in different locations from video. More explanation on what is actually being done through the wires.

What should I do if I have an extra red wire that was connected to my existing switch??? My Lutron dimmer only has 3 connector screws.

Can I have the other half of the the video
Cannot fit 12 gauge wire around screw. Simply not enough room around the screw to fit the looped wire. Worst part of wiring a complete room.

What if there is no ground wire? My old outlet only has two wires
At first I thought this was an SNL skit due to this lady's voice
What if the house doesn’t have ground Will it still work. ?

Great instructions
why is the 2nd red wire even exist if it should be capped??
I used this product 3way switch it not work , keep flashing the lights

This was very useful. A simpleton like me completed 2. Thank you.
Awesome job thank you so much
excellent…. the only difference with the alexa dinner is hooking up the neutral wire

Same 🤣 frustrating can’t find a simple video
Lmao , I'm having the same problem and I'm about to rage quit.
Black (Line wire) to Black and White (Load wire) to Red.

Which wire is load and which one is hot source?!?!?! These instructions are essentially useless.

Someone didn’t read the paper instructions it tells you that red and black are interchangeable
it literally explains them
A switch having a load is quiet odd don’t ya think?
This doesn’t tell you what to do if there is a red power wire and two black wires. You could easily mix up the two black wires.
Great video. Thank you
Excellent tutorial. Well done Lutron!
