    Going to disagree with a couple things here.
    13:25 There is a clear difference with "doesn't exist in the game" and "not obtainable outside of transferring or trading". If a Pokemon is in the game, then it's in the game. Half of them being unobtainable outside of transferring and online trading IS dumb, but they're in the game regardless and perfectly usable should you obtain them.
    15:49 Not necessarily true. Pokemon games starting with X/Y have noticeably less content, balance and polish than most of the DS games. There is a very real reason on why "BW2 were the last good Pokemon games" is a common statement.
    22:21 Something you need to realize is that most of the complains regarding the graphics animations boils down to two things: 1. The fact SwSh is on a remotely powerful console instead of a Leapfrog toy 2. The fact that Gamefreak promised higher-quality animations to make up for the dex cut.
    24:48 The older games were objectively better overall. That's all there is to it. For the record I've hated the state of Pokemon and the quality of the recent games since ORAS.
    27:27 Again... not true at all. The best Pokemon games like Platinum, HG/SS and BW2 don't have flaws like awful graphics, awful animations and virtually no postgame content. Not to mention the difficulty of SwSh makes older Pokemon games look hardcore in comparison thanks to the (now forced!) Exp. Share.

      There is a clear difference between "doesn't exist in the game" and "not obtainable outside of trading and transferring", but the point I was trying to make was that to a casual player who picks this up as a single player experience, it might as well be the same thing. I mean, if the only way for someone to obtain a Pokemon is to go on Reddit and coordinate a global trade with someone, then that Pokemon might as well not exist. I suppose I just have a really old-school mindset when it comes to this sort of thing. I can at least understand version exclusives and having Trade evolutions because your suppose to meet up with a friend who's playing the other version, but if both players picked up the game from scratch, then you both can't obtain the missing Pokemon within the game, which in my opinion, is the only thing that matters! When the solution to getting a Pokemon is to turn off the game and go on the internet, then it might as well not even exist to the vast majority of players. I can understand the difference, but that's what I was trying to get across.
      I do think there's a honest discussion to be had about having sprites versus the 3D models. I mean, obviously there's a lot of artistic merit for preferring the sprites, because the 3DS just didn't have the processing power to make the 3D models look good. Honestly, those 3DS games look like shit with the extremely low resolution, so clearly, the DS games will obviously look better by comparison. On the other hand, while Pokemon Sword and Shield has it's own issues, it's still the best looking Pokemon game to date, which in the grande scheme of video games, look kind of average for the most part. Of course, Platinum, HG/SS didn't have animation problems because the sprites didn't move at all! I do think there's a charm with the animation for Black and White, but in my opinion, the way the camera squashes and distorts the pixel art kind of looks awful to me and I honestly prefer Pokemon Sword and Shield at this point. Maybe it looks better on an emulator, but when I replayed Black a year or so ago, I thought it looked kind of ugly during the battles, especially since the DS has such a low resolution to begin with. Of course, you can still hate the animation and graphical issues with Pokemon Sword and Shield, but the earlier Pokemon games don't look as good as people make it out to be.
      My favorite game in the series would probably be Gen 2 (including the remake), but like I said in the video, you're still getting the same experience from every single Pokemon game (at least until you reach the end credits, which is where most people stop playing anyways). Of course, I can objectively say that Gen 2 is the best because you can go back to Kanto and do all this other shit once you've beaten the game, but once I've reached the end credits, then everything else doesn't really matter to me anymore. In fact, it seems like everyone's favorite Pokemon game boils down to whatever you can do in the post-game, because the core experience of every game up until the end credits is exactly the same! There are slight differences between each generation (like the EXP share, new Pokemon types, ect..), but it really doesn't change the game in a significant way to the point where someone might prefer Gen 2 because of the battle system or Gen 6 because of the story. It all just boils down to the same thing for me. It's one of the main why I still have tons of respect for Pokemon Colosseum, because despite it being kind of average, the premise of the game is so drastically different to anything Game Freak has ever made that it still stands out even to this day.

       HyperCharge "the point I was trying to make was that to a casual player who picks this up as a single player experience, it might as well be the same thing."
      Understandable.
      "while Pokemon Sword and Shield has it's own issues, it's still the best looking Pokemon game to date, which in the grande scheme of video games"
      I don't think higher resolution and more polygons automatically means better graphics. SwSh as a whole is just unpleasant to look at in half of the areas of the game to the point of being distracting.
      "Of course, you can still hate the animation and graphical issues with Pokemon Sword and Shield, but the earlier Pokemon games don't look as good as people make it out to be."
      Gen 2 has my favorite battle animations in the series because they do a great job at making the attacks straight to the point and impactful while leaving the viewer with a lot of room for imagination. Pokemon as a whole has never looked above average in term of graphics, but SwSh is easily the worst looking Switch exclusive alongside Three Houses (highest grossing franchise Vs. much smaller series that was on the verge of death years ago). Heck I'd still argue Three Houses looks better overall because its visuals are more consistent in comparison.
      "There are slight differences between each generation (like the EXP share, new Pokemon types, ect..), but it really doesn't change the game in a significant way to the point where someone might prefer Gen 2 because of the battle system or Gen 6 because of the story."
      The fanbase as a whole thinks Gen 5 is the best because of the story alone, and many people avoid playing the games before Gen 4 because of the lack of the physical/special split.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Shyguymask I think you might be overestimating how much people actually invest in the combat system with these games. For the average player, as long as you know what's super effective against what, you can basically steamroll the entire game, which is why it's such a good game for kids. Even with Gen 1, it was entirely possible to over level your starter Pokemon and tackle your way to elite four purely from having a level advantage. I mean, if you understand the physical/special split and how attack/special attack works, you do have a major advantage over casual players, but having that knowledge isn't really important for getting to the end of the game, since the only important thing is having a type advantage. Again, I suppose it's more important with Pokemon Battles with other players to understand the stats, but that's just not my kind of thing at all and I've never cared.
      This is totally off topic, but I've always thought the story for Gen 5 was kind of weak in the sense that it didn't really go anywhere with it. The game takes this interesting concept of addressing the morals of capturing Pokemon, but since Pokemon can't address the issues without acknowledging that N is actually right, they kind of just half ass wave it away and say, "Oh no, slavery is totally fine, because the Pokemon love it!". Meanwhile, the only way the game wraps up the story is that the leader of Team Plasma was actually evil and just wanted to take control over everyone's Pokemon, so they didn't even have the balls for the villain to even be morally grey. I mean, N was pretty cool, but the entire story has an amazing concept which they completely squandered. Of course, I don't expect them to address the issue and go super dark with it, but it just ended up being the standard Pokemon story of stopping the evil leader and the amazing concept which draws you in gets put to the wayside and gets forgotten about. Maybe Pokemon Black and White 2 goes a little further with it? I have no clue cause I never played it.

    I didn't care that we couldn't trade over EVERY pokemon. What I did care about was how underutilized the switch tech was for what should have been a revival point for the franchise. That being said, I was extremely sad and depressed to discover that I couldn't transfer over my starters from all the previous games at the very least.
    I would have been happy (somewhat) if I could have sat back at the end of the game and look at my party consisting of each of my starters from the previous games. I mean yeah it's all nostalgia but each starter for me was like a marker of where I was in my life at the time. It's like my own personal historical timeline made up via pokemon starters. THAT'S why I didn't buy the game, because it felt like a part of me would be missing as I would be playing through the game.

      I felt like Sword and Shield was always going to be a weird transition period, especially since in order to make a game much more grande, they'd have to put in way more effort than they did with the handheld systems. I'm hoping they'll build off these games and start doing more innovative stuff, because if the next couple of games are just Sword and Shield again, it would be incredibly disappointing.

    Just recently found your channel and I agree with you for the most part. My hot take on the issue is they should have done a dex cut sooner because how much longer can they continue to add new pokemon with each game before the series completely implodes on itself. Of course the battle animations are simplistic because someone had to figure out attack animations for almost 1000 pokemon and he would like to see his family again in the next century and the problem is only going to get WORSE. Yeah SwSh reuses the 3DS models because how many man hours do you think it would take to 1. make a new engine and 2. complete each new model, properly rig them, and then program their interactions with all the different moves while also making all new animations for every attack with a tiny ass budget, a smaller then average team for AAA development and no time.

    I didn't really think of the DLC as a replacement for a third/fourth game in the same generation, but it makes absolute sense because that's what those kinds of games are. Like with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they're literally the same games but with more post game content. I already beat Sun, so why would I bother playing through it again just for like 2 more hours of new gameplay? My first game in the series was Emerald so I wasn't even aware of the controversy of that Generation at the time.

    In regard to Gen 3: The missing Pokemon may not have been *catchable,* but...
    *They were still PROGRAMMED INTO THE GAMES!!!*
    If they weren't available in those games' code, you couldn't trade the missing ones over *TO BEGIN WITH.*
    HMMM... What does SwSh *NOT HAVE* in its code!?!?
    Certainly not ALL of the missing mons!
    No, they want to sell that shit back to you and then some.
    Unrelated, but can we address that we essentially have to buy another save file for $60?
    No, the Switch-user trick doesn't count.
    1) that's wasn't intentional
    2) you need another Nintendo Online Account (with a different e-mail) to even access the online features again

      Mmkay. I watched the rest (like I should have) and you know what I found?
      That the *only* thing that we agreed on in my comment was the 'selling old Pokemon back with the DLC' part.
      You never mentioned the missing Pokemon still programmed in the older games and not for SwSh.
      Does it really change the *core* idea of your argument? No, it doesn't. Not when everything is already said and done, anyway.
      But it *does* change the perspective on the issue, if that makes sense to you.
      Given all of the lies and supposedly "futureproofed" models, it kind of paints a more insidious picture.
      There is no logic to it. They should have at least been *programmed in,* no excuses.
      I get it. In practice, it *seems* like it was the same thing since Gen 3, but there comes the problem:
      You *can't* transfer them now; the OPTION is now gone.
      Casuals never were going to care... so why not keep it in?
      Leaving it out only *upset* people AND/OR *didn't affect* other people.
      See the lack of a *positive* outcome? No logic to it.
      Why incite negativity to cater to the people who DON'T GIVE A FUCK EITHER WAY???
      It doesn't make sense, but it doesn't matter anymore.

      @@Deoxys_Used_Mimic No, I get what your saying, but you have to remember when Ruby and Sapphire were released, you couldn't trade ANYTHING OVER, so even if they were "hidden" in the code or not, it didn't matter! Of course, they fixed the problem retroactively with the later games, but when Ruby and Sapphire were the only games out, the missing Pokemon were ABSOLUTELY UNOBTAINABLE and you couldn't even trade over Pokemon in the Gen 3 Pokedex either! Sure, they were still technically in the code, but it effectively was the same situation as Gen 8 during the time. Of course, the later Gameboy Advance games fixed the issue, so people don't remember it being as bad as it was!
      Meanwhile, it's pretty clear that the models for Pokemon Sword and Shield are mostly missing, but like I said in the video, their adding new Pokemon thru the DLC and I can imagine they'll continue to add more once they keep remodeling all the Pokemon for the future games as well. So, in 5 years or so, when it's all said and done and every Pokemon is remodeled and patched in, will it really be different than Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire? There's technical differences with both games during the time, but the problems at launch were almost identical, (and debatably worse for Ruby and Sapphire, despite the Pokemon existing in the code, since you couldn't trade over ANYTHING).
      For me personally, I don't think Game Freak did this because their maliciously taking the Pokemon away. I think they are simply incompetent and messed up the process of bringing the 3DS models to the Switch. Yes, they did say they were future proofed, but clearly, that was before they realized they fucked up. Now, normally when you mess things up, you can just delay the game, but since Pokemon is such a massive operation with the stupid anime, trading cards, and plushies, they didn't have the option to. Honestly, I would put the blame more on the Pokemon Company than Game Freak at this point, but it's sort of both of their faults.
      Like I said in the video, I feel like the problem with Pokemon is much more complicated than this dumb controversy. The Pokemon Company's entire business model is almost designed to churn out mediocre games and now that Game Freak actually has to put in effort with these new console games, it's clearly taking a toll on the quality. Now, I do have faith that things will get better, but that's only if the Pokemon Company or Game Freak start to make some major changes with how they operate their business.

    I think my problem with the series is the easy difficulty, mindless gameplay, and probably just getting older.
    I don't enjoy Pokemon anymore. When I play an RPG I want good and fun gameplay with some sort of challenge, or optional difficulty settings.
    I don't really care for the national Dex stuff, but the game is just not worth $60 or the time to play it.

    • @PittsburghSonido
      @PittsburghSonido 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can agree to that in some sense. I feel if you lose inspiration to play as an adult then it is only natural. But some of us keep it although we have fully realized and come to acknowledge that the games are really "meh" compared to other RPGs. It's just the way it is.
      Now, with that said, I am among the few who fills the national dex. I already have. I completed it fully back in Gen 6. But to me, once you fill it, you're done. You don't have to necessarily ever do it again (at least in my opinion). Which is great because I can transfer the entire dex to the new games, at some point. Which is totally fine to me. Like I said, I understand these games and this entire franchise are solely meant for normies. And I think that's where the divide begins.
      People want these games to "go back to the way they were". But they never really WERE that way. They're just mainstream normie games for kids and families. And that is completely fine to me. There is still joy to be had in playing this franchise.
      To you last point I also somewhat agree. But that's only because I see no point in paying sixty dollars ever for a single game. I think that's ridiculously high, always have. I understand the devs gotta get paid but you and I both know in this industry those poor bastards actually making these games what they are aren't getting paid squat. It's all to the company heads. Which is a damn shame.
      Tl;Dr, I think this whole controversy is stupid. Pokemon isn't worth this much division.

    11:47 All the controversy is about not being able to move certain Pokémon to Sword and Shield, not the national dex, no one cares about that, they just want to have the non Galarian Pokémon in the game. Also the people want a new Pokémon game that has those Pokémon in them, and Gamefreak didn’t do anything about it

  • @QwertyCaesar
    @QwertyCaesar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm one of those shiny living dex folks and I didn't give a fuuuuuuuck about this stupid controversy. Not only were you right on all of your points but on many of them you could go into way more depth to make the complaints seem even more hypocritical. Besides we all knew that almost certainly there's gonna be a game on the Switch which will have the full roster, it's not like the Pokemon I've caught are in purgatory forever or anything, I just gotta wait another year or two since they churn these games out quite frequently and reliably so.
    At the end of the day I know what I play Pokemon games for - for a sense of community and because playing a new Pokemon game is a creature comfort like slipping into a old pair of shoes that you've broken in. If people don't want to play them anymore then fine but don't lie and pretend that anything has really changed. Nothing has fundamentally changed unless you play competitively.
    Oh also since a bunch of comments are whining about it, just because a Pokemon can be traded into the game after you beat it doesn't mean that it's really playable. I mean sure, you can breed it, you can do whatever cutesy side activities with it, but you're never going to actually play the game with it. Unless you edit the game to change the Pokemon available during your main playthrough you'll never play through FireRed with a Torchic or a Heracross or a Gardevoir. You're not playing the game with your old Pokemon from previous adventures, you're enjoying a small of postgame content with them. It's like listing the Hyper Beam as a powerup in Super Metroid - technically you do get it but for what? Literally one final boss that is intended to become a pushover and an escape sequence. Would you honestly put the Hyper Beam alongside the Wave Beam and Ice Beam as a featured powerup if you can only access it for the last four minutes if the game?

      I probably wouldn't have made this kind of video back in July though. Really, the only this video exists is because despite the whole controversy, Pokemon Sword and Shield was still a standard Pokemon game. The whole secret discussion of the video isn't really the controversy, but more so why people still bought it, why the Pokedex didn't matter, and why Pokemon fans still had fun playing the game, which I really couldn't talk about unless I got my hands on the game and played it for myself.

    I think the only point you could have addressed was that gamefreak did make promises in exchange for the dex cut and then didnt actually follow through with those promises. Otherwise i would entirely agree. Im a casual player myself who doesnt buy more than 1 version however when gamefreak made promises they didnt intend to keep it pushed me over the metaphorical wall. When a company promises to make better models for their time instead of including every pokemon. It made sense for me and alot of other players. When that was no longer true the cut of pokemon didnt feel justified anymore. At the end of the day it almost doesnt matter because they were gonna pay wall them anyway but it would have been nice to push up my mysmegus ive had since ruby and saphire.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always interpreted those "promises" as them kind of just making an excuse for messing up. I feel like whatever happened over at Game Freak was clearly not intended and even if they wanted to bring them all back, they probably couldn't during the time frame of the games release. I also do think Game Freaks terrible standards also doesn't help as well. Like, clearly you can point to certain battle animations or models, say their "better" than Sun and Moon, and Game Freak would have "technically" kept their promise. Still, despite what they may think, it definitely wasn't on the level that fans would expect with such a drastic change and I'm pretty sure Game Freak knew this, because it was most likely just an excuse they came up with during the Nintendo Direct livestream.

    I despise Galar as a whole. Not only because of the Nat dex but because they made the availability of rare trade or stone evos easier to acquire. I think the game plot was somewhat empty and missed the Pokémon charm from previous entries. I thought the art design of menu pages, the dex, battle text, dialogue blocks, the map, the geography, etc. were boring and not all that unique for a home-console entry. Although I think the designs of the new Pokémon designs are great, I think everything else was bland.

    @gaybowoser 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think I mostly relate to his point that some of us were expecting a departure from the similar gameplay structure that Pokémon had because it was going to be on a main console, and I understand why it was unrealistic to think that way after watching their video, hence why i was (personally) disappointed on the games before the controversy even happened, what happens with pokemon is that each saved file is different because, unlike other rpgs, you choose your own team and you customize your pokemon your own way, so every playthrought is more unique than your usual rpg (you could call that the "pokemon experience" which is the "catching, leveling and exploring the region) and new games only give a new coat of paint (region, art style, new features and new options to live that same core experience like new pokemon, new moves or slight changes to the battle mechanics). With the years game freak has tried to perfect and polish that experience while also giving it a new coat of paint every time so players dont get bored of each game (i also have to say that, personally, i think that they have been improving and polishing the "coat of paint" part too by designing new regions and pokemon in a more cohesive way to make a more complete pack, basing regions on real life places other than japan and studying the culture and geography of each place to make seem each setting more unique (which is something i personally think the first 4 regions lack (maybe not jhotto))), by having a game which makes every save file unique and every journey personal (as i explained before) and also changing the outside shell every generation its no wonders it has worked to not change the formula that much. I think that is true for sword and shield that the qualify as a very polished pokemon experience and a very distinc coat of paint (thought pokemon games have been lacking in objective content (things to do in the aftergame mostly) since x and y), but my point is that if the similar "pokemon experience" is present in all games (sword and shield is more polished but its mostly the same shit on every game on the core, its just more streamlined in sword and shield as you said) then the only reason to buy newer games is for the coat of paint part without really innovating on the core experience of the game the new region, new pokemon, and new features gets old over time and doesent fix the core problems of that pretty good, but not perfect experience (i mean they just removed tms on gen 7).
    Thats why i personally want on gamfreak to start innovating so they make something that feels like that core experience but also being freash and adressing the problems that are starting to get stale on pokemon (i could mention them but this comment is already too long but im sure everyone has something in mind from the games not taking advantage of the uniqness of each game by being p much linear aside from the pokemon u choose, to recycling the same story structure, to not really encouraging players to use the dephts of the battling system (i mean you can beat most games with just thinking about the pokemon weakneses but the battles are way more than that), etc), and one good thing that has come with this is that more people are being vocal with at least this. I really dont care if sword and shield had all pokemon programeed or just the ones who passed because it was going to be the same pokemon game either way which old fans have had plenty for the last 20+ years and new fans have A LOT to experience.

    I've been critical of the pokemon series since gen 3 and most of my issues have to do with the series not evolving much with each iteration. I honestly think there would have been no national dex controversy if game freak delivered a pokemon game that blew people away instead of a mediocre product.

      I've been having trouble actually tracking down the true number of Pokemon available in Gen 4 purely cause the Sinnoh Regional Dex just doesn't include everything for some reason, including some of the new Gen 4 Pokemon as well. There's also that whole thing where Pokemon are included into the game via Dual Slot mode, which only makes it more complicated because you CAN technically catch me in-game, but only by purchasing another Pokemon GBA game and putting it in your GBA port while playing your DS, which for me doesn't REALLY count.
      I've been using this list on bulbapedia for tracking the Pokemon availability, but it's kind of a complete clusterfuck.

    This video forgets that the GTS exists. I barely ever transfered Pokemon, but I could pretty much always get any Pokemon I wanted with a single cartridge just by asking for a resonable trade on the GTS.

    • @HyperCharge
      @HyperCharge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The GTS is a good system, but I feel like the ideal scenario would be finding them in the wild grass. After all, the slogan for the games used to be "Gotta Catch Em All!", not "Gotta Trade Em All!". Well....I suppose that's why they got rid of it. Maybe they could change it to "Gotta Transfer Em All!".

      @@rainstarsworld9429 Well, when I'm making videos, you have to realize that I'm purposely exaggerating certain parts for entertainment. I'm still giving my genuine thoughts on some stuff, but if I can make a funny joke by somewhat ruining my credibility, then I'll probably take that chance. I mean, obviously, I look like an asshole when I show the South Park WoW guy in every video and it probably turns away a bunch of people, but I dunno, I get a kick out of it, so whatever! At the end of day, I'm not trying to persuade people to feel the same way I do. I'm mostly acting like a psycho shouting on the street on my little soapbox of a TH-cam Channel, and if people want to stand around and watch, then go ahead!
      Meanwhile, when the video's all edited together and it's uploaded, I'm not trying to be entertaining in the comment sections. I'd rather get my point across so people understand why I feel the way I do and clear up any misunderstandings. I can ramble for paragraphs about the GTS and all that boring shit that doesn't make it into the video and we can actually have a normal discussion. Like, obviously, if I was sitting down with everyone here in real life, I wouldn't be screaming about all this stuff, because I actually don't care that much. Like, at the end of day, I'm not seething with rage over the possibility of Sora being in Super Smash Bros, or the Zelda Timeline, or all this other stupid stuff I complain about. I know that's kind of obvious, but you'd be surprise how many people don't get it.

    Pokemon has always seemed problematic to me. It feels like quantity over quality, and scummy to boot. I really think the first gen shouldn't have had more than, say, 101 Pokemon, with future games not adding too much either. So many Pokemon just feel half-arsed or completely forgettable because the developers only have so much time to develop them.
    And I'm sure someone on the development side had good intentions when they thought of the dual-games concept - you know, providing an excuse to socialize and collaborate with friends by trading stuff. But in the end it felt more like money-grubbing tactics and I've never liked it. Plus, they release the games too frequently. Why two generations on the DS and two generations on the 3DS, with "sequels" in each of those generations on top of that?
    At some point this whole thing was gonna blow up and the Pokemon would have to be cut down eventually. There's just too many and most of them suck, whilst the turn-based combat and other aspects of the games suffer.

      Yeah, I can understand that. I suppose as someone viewing the situation from the outside, it's been so obviously a scam since I've never bothered with the transfer process. Perhaps if you've been transferring everything over as each new game comes out, it might not be as huge of a problem and you might not think about it as much. For me though, once Gen 3 happened and you couldn't transfer anything from the Gameboy Color games, I simply checked out and never looked back.

    So what you are saying is that mcdonalds and pokemon are both simple hot garbage that almost anyone can enjoy that also banking off of nostalgia also great video! And it only took how long for the fanbase to realize the national dex was a complete cluster fuck since Gen 3 and since Gen 3 these scummy business practices has been working and it only took until now to realize that. You do make a great point why the graphics is what it is but it still kinda disappointing that a simple mod can make the graphics look better coming from a multibillion dollar company but it doesn't matter because all they need to do is slap pokemon in the title and people will still buy it despite my username I'm not even a hardcore pokemon fan I never even bothered even to try to complete the national dex beside in moon but quit about over halfway through while trying to get the shiny charm because of how repetitive it got. Maybe SW/SH isn't that bad after all because it always been hot garbage that almost anyone can enjoy while fixing some problems from the past games in the series.
