You hit the nail on so many heads with these comments. After 25 years of painting I thought I was skilled enough to fix all the bad issues of a bad reference photo, but I have been struggling and stubborn enough to keep trying. Ugh. Thank you!
I am frustrated by a recent failed portrait. I struggled with my values, shapes, colors, accuracy…yeah crisis of confidence all right. But you helped me see my reference had a lot to do with it. Thx 😊
Sometimes both. I often make the mistake of using poor photos. I once painted a dead CEO board room painting. The company gave me a 2 inch photo from the 70's. I should have charged them triple.
I have worked on and failed at 9 versions of the same difficult reference that must eventually get done. It's miserable. Solving in the middle does NOT work. I've resorted to willow charcoal study of the subject before coming back.
