Yeah it’s definitely not easy, but it’s something that is slowly being lost generation to generation. It’s great to see this mother and son passing that knowledge down!
thats the point the more and more you grow and practice you will learn from your mistakes and past experiences eventually you'll grow the best fruits and plus it doesnt hurt to plant some and start because if it doesnt grow right there is nor harm done
When i was probably 4 or 5, my grandfather built these raised planting beds in front of the front porch of our trailer. He and i planted strawberries in one of them, because my mom loves strawberries. After my parents divorced, my dad tried to take the strawberries out and plant other things in it. No matter what he did to that bed, he always kept getting strawberries coming up in it. We think they put roots up under the foundation of the porch and just kept pushing back into the bed, but who knows. Those strawberries were there until after I graduated highschool. So they were apparently doing very well
@@SaintShion well no, those strawberries attracted ants like crazy and they'd get all in the house, so he wanted to get rid of em to get rid of the ant problem. he really wanted peppers in that bed, but it turned out strawberries and peppers do not coexist well
@@sketchiscribblr8285 Ohhhhh! That's why! Strawberry is a prolific grower, but they're also prone to some diseases and pests. Planting pepper near it will only make things worse. So, some infections will kill the peppers. Your poor dad 😆 sounds like he learned that the hard way.
Strawberries are really easy, once you have one plant you just pot the "runners" that grow out of the original plant into new pots and snip once theyre rooted. you can turn one plant into as many as you want.
Absolutely agree! I always check the comments (even when the video is already excellent, like this one). It's great what people offer up whether it's hints or personal stories. Also - thanks @Judybaogarden and your son for posting this....and I'm DONE!👍😁🍓
Just bear in mind that any strawberries you buy from a store is a hybrid. Any plants you grow this way will produce different strawberries, not like the seed you saved.
Your mom's garden is incredible!!! How does she keep garden pests away??? I've had problems every year either with fungus , aphids, cabbage moths ... 🤦 Help!!
You can try companion planting. It doesn't work for all bugs, or all plants, but it does work the majority of time. Was much easier when I was on our farm, but now that I'm in suburbia I've had to be more selective about what's in my kitchen garden. Planting all year basil in pots with garlic chives, thyme and regular chives and popping my tomato pots in the centre of those, I've not had bug problems with any of the plants. I kept birds away from the tomatoes and strawberries by arranging their pots next to my prickly pear (large cactus) or heavily throned roses. For fungus, white or black spot on my roses (a result of moving stress) I've been using methylated spirits in a mist sprayer on the whole plant. Starting at once a week for the first month, now I only use it once each season. It also gives the roses a bit of a boost for some reason. If you can't do companion planting for any reason, or if you have a pond, encourage native frogs to make their home in your garden. They will love looking after those bugs for you. I hope this helps. 🌹
Omg i wanna come work at this garden, your mom is so wise and I would love to be self sufficient like this. Im sure my husband and daughter would love if I knew this aswell lol.
Are you implying that you want her to work in your garden? 🤔 That's an odd thing to say. Most people would want to do this sort of thing themselves since it's therapeutic...
@@ChildofYAH Or maybe he's implying he'd love to have a wonderful garden but doesn't have the time, knowledge and resources to make it happen therefore he'd love to have OP's mom in his backyard knowing full well she could turn it into something out of a fantasy movie. It was most likely more a compliment than an attack. This is what happens to your brain when you spend too much time on the internet, develop too much brainrot from all the liberal horseshit constantly shoved down people's throat and constantly go out of your way to pick imaginary fights with strangers in the name of social justice.
@AH-vt9zm its normal vegetative reproduction, almost every Strawberry does it, you dont have to do anything. as soon as theyre rooted thats your new plant
@AH-vt9zm exactly what they said. You don’t have to do anything special at all. Let them grow. They usually do it during off season which is fall and winter. And when their runner is established and big enough to survive on the their own, cut the connecting stem or they won’t grow any berries.
Of course it's easier and faster but you get only as many plants as suckered. Seeds give you hundreds more plants, yeah they rake longer to grow individually, but you'll get MORE plants faster, you just have to wait longer for Strawberries to come. Can always combine the methods.
I wish I still had my mom but the chances of having healthy, good, and loving parents are probably not even 50/50. Of course I don't know anything about you or your situation but I'm sorry that you didn't have parents. However you might have had a better childhood without them, as hard as that is to believe. For those of us without parents or for those that had abusive parents, we have to remember to love and care for ourselves the way we should have received from the loving parents we all deserved. Best wishes to you 🙏
I'm gonna have to try that. I'm in the process of making a strawberry patch in my gardens, but the plants are so expensive. Thank You for sharing all the wonderful tips.
It grinds my gears, when I was a child they cost pennies! I was in yhe shore yhe other day and some vegetables we have always grown here in the UK they are near on £8 a pack, my grandma grew everything she would turn in her grave if she saw the cost now.
Don't skimp on plants and buy heirloom non GMO plants from a reputable greenhouse. Many plants you buy at big box stores or hardware stores like Ace Hardware, contain dis3ases. I found out the hard way. A good sized strawberry patch is a multi year project, GOOD LUCK! When you harvest those berries it's all worth it. Be sure to pluck the small berries from the new plants to encourage stem and foliage growth and root development.
Try strawberry that puts on those crawling "shoots". Last year I bought one as "hanging strawberry" with six new plants already attached to it. After 3 month I had over 30 plants on my balcony. I just burried the bases of baby plants in the soil so they get rooted faster. Even the "hanging" ones were producing fruits (I run out of potting space and let them hang outside the edge of my balcony xD I was spotting fruits from the staircase window xD)
Strawberry plants from seed won’t necessarily give you good strawberries. You need to plant the runners off of good producing plants. The seeds will give you hybrids which are like apples- they will likely be crabapples. So, maybe you’ll get crab-strawberries.
Yes, but not exactly. Wild strawberry taste way better than cultivated strawberry. In contrast with wild apples... The downside is that hey are smaller, and chances for the plant to actually survive the given climate are smaller. And biggest issue: The strawberry plant have sex genes and can be hermaphrodite, maleness, femalness, partially fertile or fully fertile. So in short most of the plants grown from seeds will bloom but have no fruits. Or will not be able to self-pollinate. Or will not be able to self-propagade. So if you have 10 plants you will be lucky to have 1 that actually gives fruits and makes shootings for next years.
You aren’t using your brain, after that year, you have infinite strawberries, infinite jams, infinite frozen strawberries, infinite oxygen, infinite swag
What a precious lady. Thank you for this knowledge.
