They're not chucks. They're collets. A chuck is something else, usually has adjustable jaws that expand or contract to bite down on the part being machined.
8mm is not the clearance to the lath bed but rather the diameter of collets and the other attachments that are used. You're right, 8mm is the most prevalent so it's the best choice regarding getting collets and other accessories for the lathe.
@@fredflintstone8048 screwed the pooch on this one. I actually know there collets I’m not sure why I didn’t call them collets. May need to redo this video for accuracy or at least start it with the correction.

@@joekudlata7113 if you get cross slides that work with an 8 mm WW style lathe they will fit. I have a peerless lathe btw. Just make sure you can return them for some reason they don’t fit.
