Hi Adam! When I get this running, I should do a thumbnail of me turning an apple. 🍎 I just ordered new wire and grommets for the motor, and next weekend I will start cleaning all the metal bits. I can't wait to get this thing spinning!
This is a big step forward,Mike.Once you get your collets alined you are ready to get differe nt sizes of round metals and a few gravers (GRS is a good saurce)and some sort of device to sharpen the gravers.Dont forget calipers and micrometer You got a future ahead.Thank you.
Hi Angel, thanks for the well wishes! Gravers on order. And thanks for the calipers reminder… I have a digital micrometer, and I have a pair of metal points for my drawing compass. I don't know if that will be precision enough to use as a caliper, but I'm going to give it a try!
I found your video while looking for base options for my own watchmaker's lathe. The base you have there is certainly basic. But also certainly functional. I want to do more of a box style with a drawer for the collets and other parts. That Starrett tool is a toolmaker's vise. You can watch a good explanation of it by Tubalcain where he describes the Starrett versions and then makes one for those not lucky enough to get an actual Starrett version. th-cam.com/video/tNodkUNHhdQ/w-d-xo.html The part with the slot could be used with a grinding disc but more likely intended to be used with a slitting saw for slotting screws or other cutting operations. Perhaps the little vise being used to hold the items and slide along the slotted table? Making an arbor to accept very small slitting saw blades will be a good project if you don't have one in the parts already.
Hi Bruce! Thanks for helping me I.D. those parts! I enjoyed the video about the Starret clamps, and I had no idea that the end piece snapped off. I'm also starting to think about better base options. I'll use the one that came with it so I can get a feel, and then design something that fits my needs. Since I haven't used the lathe yet, I don't know what those needs are! I definitely want a slitting saw. I thought about chucking up a Dremel cutting wheel in the lathe, and using the split platform as a support. Using the Starret clamp to slide along that little 'table' is inspirational - thank you! 😎

A new base is definitely in my future, but I want to make some metal chips with it first so I can picture the ideal mounting set up. I paid just under $400 US delivered. The motor is 120 V, but is AC or DC (a "universal" motor) I don't know if there's a converter that would let you use it on 230. It's definitely made for the USA market. And I'm definitely going to have fun using it! 😁

As for such tiny lathes, there are so many questions, e.g. what chisels are used, what is used for precise measuring etc. I think that even a good caliper gauge isn't enough. I know only one interesting thing from watchmakers here - bike spokes are made of good metal and they are used for making watch parts (balance staffs and some others).

I have gouges of every shape and size for wood...but everything on the watchmaking lathe seems to be made with a metal graver, with only slight difference between the cutters (point angle, hook left, hook right). That's all I know right now. I'll bet in a year I'll look back with more knowledge. 😎

@@WatchWithMike I have to say they packed it very well! That’s my biggest gripe with buying vintage items on online auctions. Half the sellers have no idea how to pack the stuff!
@@IMakeWatches I have never seen a package packed so well. The box was even secured with copper industrial staples. Nothing shifted around when you move the box… I seriously thought it was a crate of apples!
