    I’m 45, so probably pretty old compared to most guys on here. I’ve been racing bikes most of my life and got into MB racing around 18 after growing up in BMX. I like videos like this. I did many races not just on a hard tail, but no suspension at all. I remember when front suspension first came out and having a conversation with someone why I was sticking to rigid forks cause “there’s nothing I can’t do on this that I can do with front suspension.” I remember getting a front suspension bike finally and being able to push technical sections harder and faster. I got my first full suspension bike around 2001 when living in San Diego and that was a big game changer. Just last week I purchased a new bike...a hardtail. After knee surgery and 4 shoulder surgeries, I can’t ride like I used to, but I still like to get out and tear it up in old guy fashion. I think one of the biggest difference is, in my age, we didn’t have all this stuff. So you learned how to ride and take technical rocky downhill sections by picking good lines and working your V brakes. I see so many guys now relying on technology and less riding skills. But in all fairness, the technology has allowed guys to push the limits way beyond what we were doing. Some of the stuff I see now is mind blowing. I remember when a tabletop was a huge deal. When the old BMX movie RAD came out and we saw a guy doing a backflip, it blew our minds!It’s fun to see guys get out on hard tails like this video. Good job my friend

      Well, a sub 9kg XC Hardtail with XC tires, rims and a 100mm XC fork would probably not survive these Jumps and rock gardens.

      Gladly my wife understands the joy I find in Mountainbikes!
      Often we ride natural trails together - but she’s on her horse while I ride my bike!
      Super fun to do it together, whe usually have 3-4 rides a week, which sums up to about 200km in a month.
      Not that super much, but I think through riding (literally riding for my wife) together I get way more km as if I’d do it all by myself.
      Actually I’m pretty proud of the 2500km we ride in a year.
      I lost over 20kg through this and get so much more physical training.
      Also it’s super handy to have a horse with saddlebags with you since it can carry all the tools, drinks and food.
      No need for a backpack, just get yourself a horse I guess😂
      A bit offtopic I guess since I mostly ride my Nukeproof Mega 290 instead of my old Kona Stuff Hardtail, but hey🤷🏻‍♂️

    I'm slowly saving to get a new bike and finally get off my very old short travel full sus xc bike, and until recently I was thinking it's get like a 160ish full sus AM or enduro bike. But lately I've actually been thinking of getting a hardtail instead! These videos have been driving me that direction, since it seems like a hardtail would force me to learn better skill and technique. I don't want to let the tech compensate for a lack of skill, which is why I switched to flats after riding clips for a long time.

    • @zyoungson

      If you are on a budget a hardtail is 100% the way to go, it will help hone your skills to a point but when you get on a full suss you will be flying! and yes , ditch the clips flats for life 🤙🏽🤙🏽

    • @evanbarnes9984
      @evanbarnes9984 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I do want to ride bike parks in the future, but the closest ones to me are about a 4 hour drive away, so for at least a year or more that won't be a thing, really. I think riding park will be more of an occasional thing anyway, I'll probably still spend most of my time riding trail. And all my local trails are short downhill sections with long climbs, so I think the efficiency of a hardtail is looking appealing. There's also a recently built pump track and dirt jump spot that I found, so I think again the hardtail may be better. It's a hard choice! I love the confidence that comes with a nice plush full sus bike, but I think that ultimately I want that confidence to come from my own skill, not the hardware I'm on. After a bit of research, too, it does look like hardtails are the way to go on a budget, which I am on. Seems like I could spend less overall and still get really nice components. Thanks for the replies! Anyone have any favorite aggressive hardtail recommendations?

    I really appreciated this vid. As not only were able to show off a bit, coach, but was brutially honest. The grunts and oofs on the tech and rough stuff is a familiar and honest sound. And admitting that got a puncture, a ding, a tear here and there shows it is REALLY like out there.

      Gabe Taylor How do those trails feel on a hardtail vs. a full squish? I’m wondering because I am thinking about getting a hardtail as my next bike, and I’d like to know how they feel.

    • @gabetaylor7922
      @gabetaylor7922 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Scott Ridley the cross country trails feel fine. The downhill parks are absolutely murder to you whole body, especially your fingers and your wrists, but it is still super fun. Double black tech trails are good but you just cannot go very fast like people on full squishes do. You have to go slow and pick your line. If you don’t, you will pop tires and break equipment.

    I love hardtails. One thing is the simplicity of servicing and maintaining it. Second, because I'm into XC, the full suspension is not that important. Third; once you learn to drive it and know exactly what to do to get your feet act as rear suspension... you really don't need full floater. In XC. But even for me, I'd choose full suspension for bike parks just because I'm not Blake.

    Yo! Blake! Thanks man! I do love my hard tail, but I’ve just started MTB journey. Drop post is game changer. In 05-2020 I bought Scott Aspect 940 as my first MTB bike... I hate it. 7 times on service. I heard that I forced too much... every part was changed. So I bought Cannondale Trail 1 SE in November. After 300km I can say it’s not perfect, but it’s amazingly good! I need to practice skills and technic... only this. You guys makes me confident to try and do more and more. Thanks 🙏🏻

      Bike as down hill bike but hey 3k for a bike that can do loads of tracks and may possibly snap is a better option than a pure bred 4K bike for down hill no thanks I am looking into this these bikes are slightly built differently test they can go on alternative trails but at a cost of breaking a bike if you push it too hard for the wrong purpos

    when you get to a certain skill level, the only difference between a hardtail and a FS is comfort and how much abuse your body goes through!
    I can keep up with my full sus mates on my hardtail, and although I used to race downhill bikes, the best race result I ever got was on a hardtail. I'd like to have a full sus to try hitting some XXL jumps (under/overshooting a jump on a FS is way more forgiving) but for the rest of the time, I love my HT and see no reason to get rid of it! Great video!

You have dirt jumpers jumping on smaller hardtails..I don't understand the questioning and doubt of mountain bike hardtails.. They are probably more capable than FS.. Less flex. Less flimsy pivot points to snap.. Less money.. Same quality frame materials and components as fs..
