Ele diz que talvez a origem da palavra chowder vem do " comer e chorar por mais". De qualquer forma, o prato assemelha-se a um arroz de peixe e marisco, não tem nada a ver com chowder.
@@gualterrocha9224 eu percebi isso. Estava a perguntar se sabias onde em Portugal chamam arroz de marisco "chora" pq eu tenho 41 anos e nunca ouvi tal coisa. Devem de ser dos arquipélagos. Conheço chowder de new England. Parece sopa branca. Por acaso é gostosa.

I'm portuguese. This is one of the most famous dish in Portugal. We eat it at home and in restaurants. This is called "Arroz de marisco" - seefoad chowder. If you visit portugual you must try it. It's heaven in a plate. 😉
I wouldn't translate it to chowder though. It's more like a rice stew, or even a risotto. A chowder is more like a chunky soup made with milk or cream. Chora does seem to be an alternate name for this sort of dish, but the chowder connection probably emerged in that Portuguese community in Boston as a way to bridge cultures, even though it looks nothing like a chowder.
This dish looks more like Monkfish Rice (Arroz de Tamboril) or Seafood Rice (Arroz de Marisco)

That looks more like "arroz de tamboril", monkfish rice
In Portugal, the closest thing to a fish chowder is what is generally called a "caldeirada", not a "chora" (minute 1:48)! (But maybe that's Bostonian-Portuguese slang, now that I come to think of it...).
No disrespect to anyone concerned, but it looks like the skipper, Mr. Franco, has given you a bit of old codswallop... (no pun intended)

@@miguelcoelho3877 I don't know what is going on, I've replied to you twice and the comment disappeared.. maybe because I put a link from the recipe. It's closer to a caldeirada, but without potatoes or bell peppers, just tomato broth and rice.
Seafood is all about freshness otherwise otherwise it's just a little shellfish.

when you want to know what benfica is: you randomly check a video of some dudes in boston fishing and then... obviously benfica appears, they are portuguese. sometimes we forget how big and special our clube is...and we see videos like this one. cheers.

Chowder comes from Arabic for fish monger "Chader" = mixed fish or left over fish soup
It instead seems to come from the french word for stew pot, "chaudière", other french influenced languages seem to support this, although the etymology is obscure
@Frazzox There is no clear etymology for the word so we cannot know which people gave it it's name. The etymology of the french word is irrelevant, we are discussing where exactly the name chowder came from, not its furthest traceable influence.

@Frazzox That makes sense. And maybe that's the reason why it is called "caldeirada" in Portuguese, ie, something cooked in a cauldron (or, "caldeirão", in Portuguese).

The humour is in that the portuguese accent is impossible to understand, due to the fact that it sounds like you have an entire loaf of bread in your mouth when you speak (I'm assuming you're portuguese). But when speaking english, portuguese people demonstrate that they're perfectly capable of producing normal human vowel sounds. And so by the use of sarcasm I do a comparison between those two facts, and the cognitive dissonance makes it funny. Unfortunately, I forgot that being portuguese also comes with the fact that your people are unable to comprehend nuance and subtext - hence the popularity here of the so-called "portuguese jokes".
