I won't lie, I want more of this. Big projects are cool, but there's an artistry to the hand-forging, the smaller blades, that you just don't get in a Zweihander or a Dane axe. I'd love to see more of this in the future.

same, I love the content they produce but its not every day that I want to sit down and watch a 20 episode giant ass sword series. I just wanna see a small knife project that is unique and fun and really no big deal. Plus I love seeing will doing work now (im not passing judgement or anything) I just feel like we never really get to see wills talent, we just know him as the second hand in the shop which I know he is more than that, I just want to see it. Plus this was a really awesome build and he did it by himself which is worth noting.

Will traveled to the UK to do a collaboration with Alec a few years back. The next thing you know, Alec moves to 'merica and opens up shop in Montana. America, where it's aluminum, not aluminium; inches, not centimeters. I miss the days of heating lunch in a microwave at the top of a ladder. Oh, and ferrier Sam. Sam and Alex parted company, so to speak. It's been a good ride so far.

5:30 Shoutout to Will's hammering technique. Fully above his head, swinging with his entire upper body, ending in that hip-hinge manner. Really reminds me of how farriers work metal and if you want to hand forge something, the farrier swing is the way to go. Having belt sanders, presses, power hammers, and the like is great, but farriers often go on-site to do their work and have to hand forge a lot.
I'm sure Alec does this too he's a talented smith, but I'm originally from a teeny tiny village where there was a town's blacksmith and recently saw a video of back when I lived there and saw a demo. It brought all these memories and little things to the surface, so when I saw this I just *had* to point it out.

aight... maybe gonna say something controversial but we'll see. I love the content and everything about the channel, i have been here for 2 years and its only gotten better. But since the channel features will just as equally as others, i think it would be fitting to rename the channel Alec Steele Co. or something thus representing all members of the company which Alec has amazingly built up.

@Paolo Caso Yeah, the onscreen talent seems to be a 50/50 partnership where Will might even get more screen time. I don't know what their business arrangement is (though I'd be pumped for a video explaining it). I've always assumed Alec owns everything and Will is employed, but Alec did move out to Will, so maybe they went in on it together to some degree? I don't know. Putting Will's name in the channel would make sense if he's a partner. Even if he's not a channel name change might be fitting.
No matter what, I'm all in on both of these guys.

I think they need a new blacksmith stamp that incorporates Alecs old symbol and wills. They both work so hard on their projects I think it’s fitting that a symbol of their hard work should be on the metal.

i love it. rolling old school with this "Will and the Garage" series. love everything about this channel, but man i love the way this series is going so much more.
Sounds like Will is going to have to do the heat treat over. I think he needs a larger quench tank than a standard ammo can... Will, paint that refractory paste back on it, and take it nice and slow. Keeping the thin edge out of the main part of the fire will help a bunch i think, if there is a way to do that. (I've made exactly one knife. An 8" raindrop damascus chef's knife, and i took a 3 day blacksmithing class to do it. so my advice probably counts for naught)

Just wanna say how much admiration I have for Will at the end, it was clear that the hardening issue really got to him, which I understand, in these stressful times the little things can really balloon and become heart breaking. Recently I plugged two wires into the wrong ports during an electronics project and friend $200s worth of parts, and it felt like someone had just killed my imaginary cat haha. But to deliver his peice to camera while it was still a fresh wound and he hadn't formulated a plan of action yet.. That takes some guts. Chin up mate, we're all rooting for ya!

  • @dalekidd420

That was some SERIOUS forging by hand right there... on a cold anvil yet, and that makes it even tougher. (That anvil just sucks the heat right outta your piece...) Nice of Alec to drop by and strike for him for a little while there on Day 1...
Looking forward to part 2 of this one, to see if Will can save that blade. Heat treating this way is SO much more challenging than when using the high-end ovens at the shop!

  • @markfergerson2145
    @markfergerson2145 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Will, I was gonna give you a hard time for not making mistakes, learning from them and sharing what you learned with us, then you go and blow the tempering of that blade.
    Whew, what a relief.
(Okay, that sounded better in my head.)
So, do what Japanese swordmakers did- coat the whole blade with an even layer of Satanite, then put extra layers on the back of the blade so that it doesn't lose heat as fast when you quench it, and the rest of the blade serves as a heat reservoir to help the edge temper evenly.
Or is your forge just too short to get the whole blade up to temperature?
