The Faram fuller that you show in this video is called a convexed butcher tool in chasing. Basically anything that has a leading edge and one flat edge is a butcher tool. As where chiseles have two bevels and of course fullers everyone knows what those are :-)great video Alec good to see you getting back to some hand forging...

Was watching Big Dog Forge making a candle holder and immediately notice he was swinging an Alec Steele hand hammer and sure enough as he turned the hammer there it was the Steele touch-mark

Alec I have just become aware of your video's and am very much impressed. I'm 73 and just starting to do some forging using the most basic of tools. At my age the joints get sore pretty easy at times so finding the easiest way to do something in the shortest amount of time is extremely desirable. I am very impressed with the 5 video's I have had the pleasure to watch. You spend a lot of time on technique which is sorely lacking in most other practitioners videos that for the most part merely display ideas. Technique is critical to being efficient, creating less waste, saving energy and muscles, not to mention allows you to make a better product and more $$. I don't sell anything but I fail to see why so many people fail to learn and apply the basics elements of working metal that you demonstrate so well. You reflect more wisdom in your metal working than most smiths twice your age. Having said that I'm curious how old you are? Keep up the great presentations! Sincerely, Ken Weldon.

Step 1 is finally finished. Well, mostly finished. There are still some things I need to do before I can officially drive again. But it’s close! And since it’s close, I can move on to getting my craft tools. Leather and metal. When I can get a heat source set up, I’m damn sure making these and the keychains. Awesome little projects. I’ll probably also attempt a sword because I’m stubborn.

Bro, your videos are awesome. I’m a heavy fabricator in New Zealand. I made a few rail road anvils for something to do and it sparked my interest but there are next to no options for learning to blacksmith in this little country. So thanks for your great videos, gives me some direction.
QUICK TIP, with your acid etching on damascus steel, after you pull it out of the acid bath don't put it straight into the neutralizing bath because it can put splotches on the steel. wash it with water first, then do it and it can make the pattern far more clear.
I bought an old second hand vise for not much today. I told the man selling it I'm in the process of setting up a smithy and he liked it so much that he gave me a pair of blacksmith's tongs. How nice.
With all the offcuts of Damascus steel, you should totally make a viking bearded axe, also called a Skeggox, and try and have one pattern for the blade, another for the main body of the axe head, perhaps another pattern where it fixes to the handle too. Or just a big mix-up of all the different patters you have laying aroung. It would be really awesome to see all the different patterns you have made all combined into one item
You could coat it with shellac. It's used a lot in jewelry with metals that tarnish the skin (like brass, bronze, copper), it's very resistant. It would change the finishing, but clean fingers and shiny rings go well with each other ;)
As a marine corps engineer I'm used to old salts just telling you the one way something is done. It's nice seeing someone my age learn and fail and make mistakes, helps you understand why things are done the way they're done and why other things don't work. Keep up the good work brother. And keep pushing yourself.

These little videos are great Alec! A good reminder that no one is born making Damascus masterpieces, you’ve got start with the simple stuff, which often isn’t all that simple once you begin to learn the subtleties to doing a really good job.
I wanted to do some light forging this week, brush up on my skills, and saw these two videos. Made some Key Rings, made good improvement by the time I finished the fourth one. Would really like to see from time to time, more content like this.
