They started running four cars so they could start upgrading the coaches, not because the engines couldn't handle it. Also, the double heading is often the result of PTC related issues, they have a great list of all the testing they have conducted on the engines with 2 F40's being major culprits for PTC related issues due to wheel diameter issues (The computer uses GPS coupled with a rotation counter to track position) In fact, two F40's have been blacklisted from PTC testing until the errors can be corrected. They are run double header though so that NCTD meets PTC requirements while giving both engines the use they require in the contract with Bombardier.

I had the "pleasure" of riding with engine 2102 last week. The damn thing could barely make it north to Old Town before dying. Made for a good story but god does the NCTD ever need to get their shit together.
I too, hate the new K5LLs that the Coaster Cab Cars are being equipped with. I hope 2301 and 2309 can stay at least as good as they are in this video for as long as they still last (From what I heard from somewhere, Coaster will soon buy CEM cars and replace them).

Neither of those Locomotives are the Locomotive you're talking about. COASTER only has F59PHI's not F59PH's

Both F59s 3001 and 3002 still have kickass K5las despite their aging. Recently 3002 has been holding strong the most while 3001 has been acting up.

NCTD is waiting on new ones but they could lease some for a while to help out the fleet.

The one car train was more than likely a PTC test unit that rescued the other train.
